South Land’s camp,
“General Jones, one of our squads has been ambushed and we have lost tens of thousands of men.”
“General Jones, the enemy has initiated a breakout on our west side. They are not just testing, they are really breaking out.”
One soldier after another came to report.
The generals and strategists all frowned, “They didn’t break out before, but now they are, just as our encirclement has begun to shrink. The difficulty is ten times that of before.”
“Before, they might not have been able to break out either.”
“I feel that the loss of this squad is not an ordinary loss.”
Numerous strategists were deep in thought. They wondered what was really going on. However, Benson Laydon furrowed his brows after a moment of thought and said, “When did that squad sustain losses? Were there any abnormalities discovered at that time? They actually managed to ambush one of our squads under these circumstances.”
Benson Laydon raised several key questions. The intelligence officer responded, “We have yet to find the location where most of that squad was annihilated. We only know they were ambushed because we lost contact and found some of their remaining soldiers.”
They had not yet found the bodies of most of the squad members. It was just a conjecture. After all, the three teams of the Ghost Wolf Cavalry had buried those bodies, which were not easy to find.
“So, no abnormalities have been discovered yet? The enemy choosing to ambush that squad at this time is probably not as simple as it seems. Are they trying to blend in? But now, in such a complex formation, even if they manage to infiltrate, they will be exposed immediately and won’t be able to keep up with the formation,” Benson Laydon continued.
The formation was orderly. A single disturbance could affect the entire formation. If a squad could not keep up with the changes in formation, it was clearly an enemy squad.
“That makes sense.”
Many generals turned their gazes towards Benson Laydon. As the number one strategist, he had quickly identified the crux of the issue.
Finally, Benson Laydon turned to Aston Jones and said, “General Jones, I request to search for that hidden Ghost Wolf Cavalry. I suspect that this attacking group is not their main force. Once we actually start to encircle that team, and the encirclement becomes smaller, the formation will inevitably become chaotic. The consequences would be unimaginable.”
This formation was invincible from the outside, but it was not without solutions. For example, if the encirclement shrinks enough and the Ghost Wolf Cavalry charges wildly from the inside, disrupting the formation, the army of four hundred thousand would be in complete disarray. At that time, the huge army would be scattered and powerless.
However, this is easier said than done. It is extremely difficult to disrupt this formation from the inside. As soon as the formation shows a hint of disturbance, they can guess which squad it is. Once they find out which squad it is, that squad is done for.
“Agreed.”
General Jones agreed. After all, whether it’s true or not, they have to search once to prevent accidents, regardless of whether the Ghost Wolf Cavalry attempting to break out can move or not.
How could an army of four hundred thousand let a cavalry break out so easily? If they really did break out so easily, then Aston Jones may as well go home and farm.
Therefore, this cavalry is only fighting a desperate battle, they can just leave it be.
“Encircle the entire army!”
With this order, the South Land army moved again. However, this time, they were not focusing on the Ghost Wolf Cavalry, but searching for the ‘special forces’ within.
Among them, the leader of the eighth team was Erniu, who was also of peasant origin. He was one of the three teams left behind.
He led a group of blood-soaked brothers, fought their way back, and returned to their previously agreed location. Here were most of their brothers, Black Wolf, and Aaron Linton, who was half-dead and about to fall into a coma.
“Leader, we couldn’t break out.”
Erniu came back with a heavy face.
As his name suggested, he was a brute, but not as strong as Black Wolf. He was a complete brute, not very smart, but brave and loyal, and very popular in the army.
He prided himself on his formidable fighting strength, and his team was also elite.
He wanted to try if they could break out.
And then he found out.
They couldn’t.
The enemy seemed to have an endless supply of soldiers. They killed one group, and another appeared. Thankfully, he remembered Black Wolf’s words, did not get carried away in the fight, and was always prepared to retreat. Otherwise, he wouldn’t have been able to return.
“Dumbass, I told you to scout, not to break through.” Black Wolf scolded Erniu. However, he didn’t say much else. They were able to return, which meant Erniu hadn’t disobeyed the order. The other two teams were also suffering heavy losses.
“Now, make another charge in a different direction. After that, all three teams will unite and charge once again. The rest of you, do not move without my command.” Aaron Linton, who was barely hanging on, gave the orders.
Some of the generals frowned, not understanding Aaron Linton’s commands. This was clearly sending those three teams to their deaths. What good would it do to keep going like this? But due to previous concerns, they wanted to speak up but ultimately did not argue. As for the three teams, they had prepared themselves for the possibility of total annihilation from the start. As they had said, there were no cowards in the Ghost Wolf Cavalry.
So, they didn’t care how dangerous the task was at that moment.
What did it matter if they died?
For a soldier, there was no shame in dying on the battlefield. Moreover, they were cavalrymen, and dying in the midst of a charge, though tragic, was honorable.
“Charge!”
A horn sounded, and the three teams charged out in three different directions.
In no time at all, they returned.
However, this time, they had suffered even more losses than before, losing almost a third of their forces – nearly ten thousand men. Among the survivors, many were severely injured. But their fighting spirit remained.
The Ghost Wolf Cavalry never surrendered.
Then, the three teams united and charged out again.
At this point, one of the generals couldn’t help but ask: “Now that they’ve united and charged out, isn’t this the perfect opportunity for us to advance? Otherwise, we’re wasting the opportunity they’re creating for us.”
They understood the general plan – one group attacks the enemy, creating an opportunity for them to penetrate. Then, they destroy the formation from within.
But now was the perfect time to advance. Why weren’t they doing so?
The ones sacrificing themselves were their brothers.
Until Aaron Linton, barely hanging on, said: “The… enemy… is thinking… the same thing.”
