“Who’s that?”
Black Wolf’s body emitted an overwhelming aura of killing intent, his eyes filled with bloodlust. They hadn’t noticed that there was a stranger nearby.
“Kill him.”
The crowd wanted to grab their spears and run over.
They thought to themselves, this person was right beside them, but they hadn’t noticed him, suggesting he must be a high-level practitioner. Immediately, the entire Ghost Wolf Cavalry began to emanate an aura of combat resolve, until Black Wolf took the lead and arrived at the front of the bush.
They intended to attack, but paused the next second.
It was a Kisia man. Not just an ordinary Kisia man, but a lifeless one with hollow eyes, lying on the grass. The man, who seemed to have not bathed in days, was already thin and haggard.
He looked as if he was on the verge of death.
After a Ghost Wolf Cavalry member inspected him, they reported, “Commander, this man is dying.”
He was indeed on the brink of death. With his vital signs weak and him being hidden deep in the bushes, no one had noticed him.
Neither the Ghost Wolf Cavalry nor the South Land army had detected him.
“Commander, don’t bother with this man. He’s nearly dead. We need to charge through immediately, speed is of the essence in war,” one of the deputies hurriedly advised.
They couldn’t afford to save anyone. Speed was of the essence in war. A decision needed to be made immediately.
“Give him some dry food.”
Black Wolf ordered.
“Yes.”
Someone quickly threw out a cake, and then ignored him. Black Wolf also paid no further attention. They had given him a piece of cake, the rest was up to fate. It was a small act of kindness to a fellow Kisia man.
Saving him was already too late.
He chose to break out.
No, it should be said that there was no other choice, the arrow was on the bow, and had to be shot.
However, after charging out, he looked back at the man filled with the aura of death. For some reason, the man’s previous words lingered in Black Wolf’s heart. Looking back, the man held the cake in his hand but had not eaten it.
Instead, he simply said, “Aston Jones, you are indeed the top general of South Land. With one plan, you annihilated a hundred thousand Ghost Wolf Cavalry. After this battle, your name will probably be known throughout the world.”
“Stop!”
At this moment, Black Wolf immediately ordered.
“Commander, what’s wrong?”
Surrounding deputies asked Black Wolf. They were all extremely anxious.
They had already charged out, why stop?
A few more aggressive ones felt they were about to accomplish great deeds and forge an immortal name, why stop?
However, Black Wolf didn’t explain much to them, but instead ordered, “Go back!”
Suddenly, the entire Ghost Wolf Cavalry returned to the side of the man filled with deathly aura. Black Wolf personally asked, “I ask you, why didn’t you eat the cake we gave you? If you eat it, it might save your life.”
“I don’t want to eat it, I’ve decided to die.”
The man gave a self-mocking smile, his eyes filled with emptiness.
“Why did you say, ‘Aston Jones, with one plan, annihilated a hundred thousand Ghost Wolf Cavalry’?” Black Wolf asked intensively.
For some reason, he felt a sense of crisis in his heart.
He had felt it since before, and when he broke into here, the sense of crisis deepened. However, he couldn’t identify the source of the crisis. But with the man’s words, his sense of crisis suddenly intensified.
“I thank you for the cake.”
The man lifted the cake, “We are both Kisia people, I wanted to give you a warning. And because of this cake, I owe you a favor. Now that I’ve repaid the favor, we have no more ties, you can go.”
Seeing the man talk a lot of nonsense, the deputies couldn’t bear it anymore and directly said, “Commander, don’t bother with this man, he might be a madman, lying here, he looks like he’s been starved for several days.”
“Exactly, Commander, speed is of the essence in war, we need to hurry.”
“This is a golden opportunity, we need to seize all the time and charge through.”
A lot of deputies were saying, don’t bother with this man, he’s clearly a madman.
However, Black Wolf asked again, “Do you know Aston Jones?”
“Yes, he is the leading general of the South Land army, a master of unconventional warfare, capable of strategizing within a tent and securing victory from a thousand miles away. Since his time serving under Lord Whiteford, he has never suffered a defeat. He is the most valued and trusted person by Lord Whiteford.”
The man was using his last bit of strength, speaking slowly, as if he was about to die. The surrounding deputies were becoming more and more anxious. Speed was crucial in war, they couldn’t afford to waste time here.
“Then, is there a solution now?” Black Wolf asked again.
Seeing Black Wolf lingering here, the people became more and more anxious. Some hot-tempered ones even drew their long swords, ready to kill this man to prevent future troubles. However, they were stopped by a glance from Black Wolf.
“Step back.” Black Wolf reprimanded.
“Yes, sir.” The reprimanded deputy gritted his teeth and withdrew.
They couldn’t afford to delay any further. The officers were still fighting desperately. If not for the fact that Black Wolf had already established a great reputation and trust within the Ghost Wolf Cavalry, the soldiers at this moment might have thought that Black Wolf had betrayed them. They too were ready to mutiny. However, in the end, they chose to trust Black Wolf.
But the man closed his eyes, “There is no solution. This Aston Jones is not an ordinary person. His formation is not something I can break. Besides, I owe you no more favors. You should go.”
He was waiting for death, quietly awaiting its arrival. This was also his way of atoning for the grave sins he had committed.
“Do you have any last wishes? Tell us, we can help you.” Black Wolf said, trying to make this man owe him a favor.
“Help me? Heh, I committed a grave sin against a woman I love. She won’t forgive me. This is something you can’t solve. Let me atone for it with my death.”
The man didn’t open his eyes.
“Is she in St. Sunday?” Black Wolf asked.
The man didn’t speak anymore.
Then, Black Wolf said, “If we are destroyed this time, then soon, St. Sunday will be destroyed too, and she will die. Is this how you plan to atone for her, by watching her die?”
At that moment, the man opened his eyes.
“Yes, you can’t die. If you die, St. Sunday will be besieged, and once the city of St. Sunday is broken, Theresa won’t survive. No, I can’t let you die a second time. I can’t.” The man murmured.
Life returned to his eyes.
“Carry me.”
The man seemed to have used up all his strength, looked at Black Wolf, and then said, “I am not sure, but for Theresa, I, Aaron Linton, today, am determined to break this ambush. Theresa, I won’t make the same mistake again. I won’t let you die.”
This man was Aaron Linton, the eldest son of the Linton family. The Linton family, in fact, had always been the main proponents of war in St. Sunday. They weren’t warriors, but generations of strategists. And he was the yet-to-be-recognized genius strategist of this generation.
Like his ancestors, he liked to take risks. And this time, there was no way to break through head-on, especially when facing Aston Jones. As for taking risks, they still had a slight chance. However, this slight chance was so small that it was terrifying.
