Everyone in the sickroom was stunned by the old voice. It came from none other than Rosey Chambers’ grandmother.
But hadn’t she been in a coma?
Favian Bird and Rosey Chambers immediately turned around to find a man standing by the bed, holding several silver needles in his hand. Seeing them look over, he raised his head and said, “It’s not a big deal, she just hasn’t eaten for a few days and fainted from hunger. Rosey, later on, buy some glucose and give her an IV. That should do it.”
It was Robin.
Haven’t eaten for days?
Fainted from hunger?
Glucose?
Rosey Chambers was dumbfounded. The next second, she turned her head and looked at Favian Bird, regaining her composure, “Favian Bird? My grandma’s coma isn’t because of some serious illness, but because she fainted from hunger?”
She asked this question with a hint of anger.
“How… how… how… could that be possible?”
Favian Bird stepped back in a panic, completely flustered.
How could this be possible!
How could they have discovered his plan? He had drugged her with sleeping pills, which should have kept her unconscious for three or four days. He had already made arrangements for his marriage to Rosey Chambers. After the wedding, he would simply claim that the surgery had failed and starve the poor fellow to death. By that time, Rosey Chambers would have become his plaything. The plan had been perfect.
But how could they have found out?
At that moment, he turned his gaze toward Robin, who was lying in the hospital bed. Somehow, this guy had made his way to the bedside and was holding a few silver needles he had obtained from who knows where. He was poking around with the needles.
“Rosey, who is this guy?” Favian Bird pointed at Rosey.
“I… I met him on the way… a friend.” Rosey Chambers didn’t know how to respond. In the end, he said, “a friend.” It should be considered a friend… right? Even though they had known each other for less than an hour.
“You met him on the way, so you trust this stranger more than me? Rosey Chambers, do you understand the situation? Your grandmother is critically ill! Don’t believe me? Dr. Styles, please come in!” Favian Bird shouted outside.
Instantly, Dr. Styles entered the room dressed in a white coat, holding a file. “What’s the matter?”
“This old woman woke up.” Favian Bird gave Scales Styles a meaningful look, then continued, “Dr. Styles, there’s someone causing trouble here. She’s clearly in a coma due to her critical condition, but he insists that she’s just passed out from hunger.”
“Nonsense! What do you know!” Scales Styles got the hint from Favian Bird and immediately played along, scolding Robin fiercely.
“How so? I don’t understand. Are you telling me that you, the imposter, know better? Speaking of which, Favian Bird, if you’re going to hire someone to play a doctor, at least find a real one. What’s the point of getting a fake doctor, especially one who’s not going to live much longer?”
Robin continued to insert needles while sighing.
“Imposter? You… What nonsense are you talking about?!”
Favian Bird’s heart raced. Scales Styles really was an imposter. In reality, these medical professors were all very expensive and cared a lot about their reputation; he couldn’t afford to hire a real one. So, he had to find someone to pretend to be a doctor. He thought the actor he hired could pull it off. But somehow, Robin had seen through the ruse.
Robin looked up at Scales Styles and said, “Look at him. He must be losing his beard rapidly, there are pale spots on his lips, and I can see his tongue has many spots when he talks. When he wakes up in the morning, his neck hurts, very badly. It’s a rare and incurable disease. If it continues, one night, his neck will snap while he sleeps.”
“You’re talking nonsense!” Favian Bird sneered. Robin was young and couldn’t possibly know that much about medicine. He must be bluffing, trying to scare them.
However, with a thud, the so-called Dr. Scales Styles fell to his knees, his face filled with panic, begging Robin, “Please, please save me.” He was shaking because everything Robin said was true.
Every day he woke up with a painful neck. He had visited several hospitals, but they couldn’t find anything wrong, even with X-rays. At first, he thought it was a minor issue and ignored it. But then the pain grew worse, becoming unbearable.
When Robin mentioned it, he believed it must be a rare disease that could potentially be life-threatening, which made him panic. Under normal circumstances, he wouldn’t dare to offend Favian Bird. But now, facing the possibility of imminent death and having found someone who could save him, he couldn’t care less about the consequences.
“How dare you!”
Upon seeing Scales Styles in this state, Favian Bird’s eyes reddened as his plan was essentially exposed, revealing his true nature to Rosey Chambers. He had wanted to take advantage of Rosey Chambers earlier, but after being scolded, he became even more infatuated with her. However, Rosey Chambers had always refused him, which led to his current plan. In a fit of anger, Favian Bird threw a punch at Scales Styles.
But.
With a bang, Favian Bird’s fist was caught by Jeff Reczek, who then stepped back, clanging as he retreated several steps before stabilizing. “Sir, my master didn’t allow you to touch him.”
“Thank you, thank you, sir,” Scales Styles, who thought he was about to be hit, suddenly rejoiced when he realized he wasn’t. In order to save his life, he didn’t care about anything else and exposed everything. “This guy kidnapped your grandmother to the hospital and fed her sleeping pills every day, so she was always unconscious. In fact, your grandmother is not sick; she’s healthy. The only possibility is that she’s been starved for too long and her body is too weak. Also, I was hired by him to act in this play, earning 400 dollars a day, just to deceive you. I’m not a doctor or a professor; I’m just an ordinary actor. This guy is an animal. Please, sir, save me.”
Bang, bang, bang.
Possibly out of fear of death, Scales Styles kept kowtowing loudly on the ground. “You!” Favian Bird’s face flushed in shame, wanting to beat up Scales Styles again, but Jeff Reczek blocked the way, so he didn’t dare to go forward. Just now, his wrist was still hurting.
