“What did you mean?” Xena yelled as she knitted her eyes in fear. Her heart raced against her chest.
“I heard the king summon the translator man into the hall again, he is in the hall right now. From the information I heard, the king is questioning him concerning the document you submitted” Jeanne explained.
“Did the king know that he translated the document on my behalf?” Xena asked.
“I don’t think so… but I’m not sure” Jeanne replied hurriedly, feeling afraid of what the outcome will be, she wanted to avoid causing her friend problem because of her mistake.
Just then, Xena sprang to her bare feet, and she swerved after her threatening gaze left Jeanne’s body, giving her a warning stare as she walked toward the door.
Jeanne took a deep breath, knowing that Xena was angry at her right now.
“Where are you going?” She asked in a silent tone, trying not to make her angry.
“Should I stay here with you and wait until the king hates me because of your silly…” Xena stopped and took a deep breath, trying to manage her anger, she couldn’t afford to go onto the hall with a furrowed gaze.
“Just a little assignment, but you fail to carry it out, Jeanne, and you will be saying you want to make me a queen” she snapped and slammed the door behind her.
“I’m sorry Xena” Jeanne’s voice came to her after she was on her track to the hall. She hopes there won’t be a problem for her.
The King mustn’t know she lied to him, she knew how much the king detested liars, the thought was sending fear to her fiber just as she walked closer to the hall.
Arriving in front of the hall, she took a deep breath and instructed the guard to announce her.
“Your highness” The guard she met last night at the King’s entrance lowered his head, her disdained gaze traveled around his body and she hissed.
“Announce me” She announced arrogantly.
“Let her come in” The king’s voice penetrate the door and rested in their ears before the guard could announce her presence instantly the guard pushed the door open and she walked in.
She poised her breathing, raised her head, and walked into the hall gracefully. As the king’s favorite, she had the grace of sitting beside the king even though she is not the Queen, she caught the glimpse of the seat beside the king, so she faced the seat wanting to sit on the chair, but just as she wanted to climb the steps and rest her butts on the chair, the king’s deadly voice halted her from taking her next step.
“Stop” He deadly muttered.
“Your highness” She murmured, her voice filled with fear seeing the hardened gaze of the king, the king had never disgraced or chastised her in front of other people, but today is once, and it maddened her.
“Did you know the man here?” He pointed to the translator man laying on the ground.
Her heart jumped out of her chest, wondering if the King had found out about her lies.
“Which man, your king?” She reacted like she didn’t see the man, she turned a blind eye to the man on the ground.
“Xena” Malik thundered and Xena shook, including everyone inside the hall. She couldn’t raise her eyes to look at him again.
“My king” She murmured humbly, shivering where she stood, it’s been a long time since she saw the flaming expression the king held.
“Don’t make me repeat the question?”
“My king, I didn’t know the man here” Xena shook her head firmly, standing on her word. The King isn’t pleased with her anymore and she can’t afford to make the king get angry at her.
She can’t afford it.
“My king, I know her highness. Two days here, a fair woman came to my store, she brought a French document, and she asked me to translate it to English, she said it belonged to Concubine Xena, likewise, she ordered me to lie against the slave yesterday” He said as he laid on the floor.
“How dare you? Lying against the king’s woman, are you not afraid of what the king will do” Xena snapped before the man could finish with the sentences.
“I don’t want to hear anything from you,” Malik said authoritatively, still Xena refused to back down, rather she tried to use the past against the king.
“My king, the man here is lying against me, I can’t lie against you, I’m sure he plotted with that murderer to destroy me in your presence, my king remembers she killed your father, remember what I went through for you, did you think I can lie against.”
“Enough Xena” The king’s voice came out curtly.
His face fell at Xena, she was shedding fake tears, and he realized he should trust her more than anyone. The lady standing here was the only one that stood with her mother until her last breath.
Even if she didn’t deserve his care, for his mother’s sake, he promised his mother to love her and care for her until his last breath.
‘Maybe I should turn a blind eye to this since it involved her’
“My king, you are a righteous judge, and I believe in your judgment, I think you should call her highness best friend, she can’t deny me since she was the one that delivered her highness order” The man snapped the king out of his breach thought.
“Hmmm,” The king hummed. He wanted to cover up the issue, yet he wanted to judge rightly.
“Go and call me Jeanne” The king ordered Evans and instructed the librarian to leave after he confirmed that Aurora’s translation was the right one.
“Thank you, my king” The librarian lowered his head, winked at the man, and exited the hall.
“My king” Xena stammered, she hoped Jeanne would cover up for her.
“No more word from you Xena until I cleared this mess, did you know I almost punished an innocent girl for your mistake?” The king said with an irritated expression.
“I hope Jeanne was the one that ordered him to lie, and not you because I will. .. I will…” Malik declared and stopped.
