Kayden’s POV
I remained motionless for a moment, doing nothing and saying nothing for that moment. I guessed Mantha noticed my sudden reaction because she called me out.
“Is there anything wrong?” She asked me.
“There… There is nothing.” I replied her.
“Remember that we are not to keep secrets.” she said to me and I sighed softly.
“Okay, fine.”
I walked over to her and she sat up, curiosity showing all over her still tired face.
“Here.” I handed over my phone to her, on the screen was the picture of Mantha going into James room.
“Who… Who the heck took such a picture?” She stuttered and I took the phone from her.
“Wait a minute…. Do you because of this picture think that I and James have something together?” She asked me, her eyebrows creasing into a frown.
“Of course….”
“You really do not trust me!” She said, getting out of bed in a quick instant.
Well, I was going to say ‘of course not’.
“Mantha I do….”
“No, do not say a word.” she cut me off once more and rushed over to the study table, picking up the document she had warned me not to read earlier.
“Since you do not trust me, I am going to….”
“I trust you Mantha. I always trust you, I trust no one as much as I trust you.” I cut her off loudly and she stopped in her tracks.
“You… You really do trust me?” She asked and I walked over to where she was standing transfixed and hugged me, wrapping my hands around her .
“I love you and I do trust those that I love.” I said to her and she giggled in my arms.
“How do you trust me that much?”
“It’s just natural.”
“Nice bonding! You should ask Mantha to tell us about what is in the document, she was going to show it to us right now.” Jay said to me and that was one great idea from him.
“That’s right.”
“Mantha.” I called and she raised up her head to look at me.
“Yes?”
“You were going to show the document to me, right?” I asked her.
“I… I will just tell you then.” she replied me and got out of my arms, she sat on the bed and patted the space beside her for me to sit down. I did so and stared at her, she breathed in and out before handing it over to me.
“Have a look” she said to me and I slowly opened the document but the speed with which my eyes caught the words was in sharp contrast with the slowness with which I had opened the document.
I was quite surprised to find that the document was actually about Davis.
“You were investigating about Davis?” I asked her and she nodded slightly.
“I asked James to help me with it and that was what I went to get from him when that unknown person took that picture.” she said to me.
“Why were you investigating Davis? You’ve been having a bad feeling about him?” I asked and she nodded
“When did it start?”
“Right from the day he actually told us that the guy we suspected to be a mole committed suicide. I just can not believe that he committed suicide.” she replied me.
“That’s true but then this is really hard… It is hard to think that Davis might betray me… I just can not picture it. ”
“That’s why I did not want to let you know about it, I wanted to find some concrete evidence first.” she added.
“And have you found one yet?”
“Not really but the fact that Davis is from the lock heart’s pack gives me chills. It would be to his family’s advantage if my pack was out of the way, do you understand me?”
“Of course I do. That way the position of the beta will be secured for him if your pack is out of the way but are you really suggesting that Davis might have a hand in this issue of slavery?”
“I do not really have a concrete proof but that is the only thing in my mind right now. The fact that I mentioned his name to you when I was kidnapped days ago means that definitely and certainly, there is something about him.” she said with confidence and I nodded slightly.
“You think I am saying nonsense?” She asked me.
“Of course not, I trust that you have your own thoughts.” I replied her, holding her hands in mine gently.
“Can Davis really be behind this?” I mumbled a question to Jay.
“We both know that no one, absolutely no one can be trusted.”
“But still yet Davis….”
“The truth Kayden is that you yourself do not trust him fully anymore, for the past few days, you have not been talking to him a lot.” Jay said to me.
“I guess you are right, the possibility that he is involved in the kidnap of Mantha is what is making me give him some distance.” I replied Jay.
“You know what I have been foolishly hiding now? What are you going to do? Are you going to tell me to stop doing whatever check I am doing on him?” Mantha asked me and I turned to face her with a soft smile.
“Never Mantha, I have already sworn to support you and that is what I am going to do on this too. I would support you with whatever you want to know.” I said to her and she grinned happily.
Her happiness spread to my own heart and I smiled even wider at her.
“Actually the few days I spent in the hospital, I have been trying to connect some dots but it is just not working through.” she said.
“What dots?”
“When you first found out about the slavery issue? How did the slave masters find out about it so quickly enough to get away from the original hideout? There were just few people who knew about it, Davis inclusive.” she said to me and I narrowed my eyes.
“That’s right”
“But then, there is one more person….”
“Who is that?”
“Lauren.”
