Winson raised his other hand and covered his teary eyes.
I slowly sat on the chair next to the hospital bed, gazing at Winson.
If it really was Philip… thinking about what I had asked of Philip in my past life, I laughed at myself.
It wasn’t just Winson who was deceived, was it?
“Winson,” I spoke with a low and deep voice. Winson moved his sleeves away from his eyes after a moment of dampening them, and looked at me.
“Last life’s Natasha could never forgive last life’s Winson, no matter what.” Winson’s heart tightened, he closed his eyes and nodded in pain.
He understood that he was not qualified to be forgiven.
“I don’t have the right to speak on behalf of last life’s Natasha and say ‘forgive’,” I exhaled and spoke again.
I exhaled and spoke again, “I don’t have the right to speak on behalf of last life’s Natasha and say ‘forgive’. But as this life’s Natasha, I forgive this life’s Winson because this life’s Natasha sees Winson’s determination to repent.”
Winson opened his eyes and looked at me.
I spoke calmly, “Forgiveness doesn’t mean we can accept this relationship again. Winson, we both know that there are some barriers that cannot be crossed, even if it’s across mountains and seas. The best outcome for you and me is to never see each other again.”
Winson clenched his fists, he understood, but how could he be content with that? Especially after knowing that he destroyed the only person who truly loved him in his past life, he couldn’t find peace.
“Also, regarding Philip’s matter, we still lack evidence. Suspicions cannot be used as evidence to convict someone. So, if I were you, I would rise up and search for evidence. If Philip is innocent, we will clear his name. But if he really is a traitor, we must remove this tumor without hesitation.”
He nodded bitterly, “Okay.”
After the infusion was done, we left to go back home.
Winson planned to use the method of luring the snake out of the hole to expose Philip. We agreed that nobody should reveal their footprints easily in front of Philip.
For several consecutive days, Winson arranged for Philip to run errands outside every day, but secretly had someone record his whereabouts.
Strangely, during this period, Philip didn’t make any mistakes.
But in this world, there can be no wall that is completely sealed from the wind.
As I drove towards home in the afternoon, I could see Jack’s motorcycle parked in front of the house from a distance.
Seeing Jack sitting on the motorcycle from behind with his head down, I got off the car and patted his shoulder.
Jack saw me but didn’t show the usual excitement on his face, and there wasn’t any sly smile. He spoke with a hint of exhaustion, “You’re back.”
“Why did you come here? Are you looking for me?”
Jack asked with a dejected mood, “I’m looking for Winson, but he’s not here. Do you have time? Can you have a drink with me?”
“Why are you looking for Winson? Did he offend you again?”
Looking at him calmly, Jack asked, “Didn’t he tell you? We’re working together.”
“What are you working on?”
Jack spoke with a deep voice, “Investigating the cause of my sister’s death.”
Jack was somewhat unhappy and asked, “I’m really not in a good mood. Do you want to have a drink with me or not?”
“Okay, you’re treating.”
Jack handed me his helmet, “Get on the bike.”
But by the time we arrived at our destination, I was frozen stiff.
I got off the motorcycle and shivered while stomping my feet.
Jack couldn’t help but laugh softly, brightening his previously gloomy mood a bit.
“I’m freezing to death, and you’re still laughing.”
Jack immediately took off his leather jacket and put it on me.
“Let’s go, we’ll warm up as soon as we get inside.”
I looked up at the villa gate but didn’t move.
“This is your villa?”
Jack stopped in his tracks and looked at me, “What’s wrong? Are you afraid I’ll eat you?”
I shrugged and said, “I’m so good-looking, there’s still a possibility of that happening.”
Hearing this, Jack couldn’t help but laugh again.
“Alright, let’s stop talking. If I wanted to do something to you, I could still pin you down even at the front door. Hurry up and come in, I’m cold without any clothes on.”
Jack spoke and strode into the villa.
In the living room, Jack went to the wine cellar and opened a bottle of red wine, pouring me a glass.
After pouring two glasses, the two of us clinked glasses.
“What did you want to tell Winson today?”
“Are you asking me on his behalf? Why do I have to tell you what I told him? What’s your relationship with him?”
I spoke calmly, “I have no relationship with him. I just asked out of curiosity.”
Jack didn’t believe me. “If you have no relationship with him, why are you curious about his affairs?”
I shrugged, “I’m curious about the truth about Betty.”
“You even know about Betty, it seems like you know quite a lot,” Jack said.
“I know everything Winson knows, and you going to see him at this time must mean you discovered something, right?”
Jack shook the drink in his glass and let out a heavy sigh.
I looked at him and could tell that he had a story to tell. But since he wasn’t speaking, I didn’t press him, just waited.
After hesitating for a while, Jack said, “I’ve been causing a lot of trouble at home these past few days.”
“I’ve heard, you’ve recently moved back home and caused such a fuss with your stepmother and the stepbrother she brought with her that they couldn’t even stay at home,” I replied.
“They’ve both left, which is when I could finally take action,” Jack pressed the bottom of his glass against his leg, and said heavily, “I found a recording from a car camera, and it turns out that my sister’s death had nothing to do with Winson’s family.”
He smiled bitterly, “I’ve been hating the wrong person. The one I should have blamed the most is…”
