Chapter 193

“Why should I believe you?” Jack asked. Winson remained calm and composed, “The facts you heard from your father contradict what I’m telling you. It’s normal for you to be conflicted. But let me ask you, Jack, when you were with Nelson, you should have an impression of my uncle. Do you really think he would kill your aunt, whom he loved so much?” Jack didn’t have a strong impression of Nelson, but he vividly remembered his sister’s happiness when she was with him. Winson continued, “After your sister’s passing, my uncle bought a lot of sleeping pills. He intended to join her, but my father talked him out of it using you. However, when my uncle died in a car accident, there was a significant amount of sleeping pills in his system. He killed your sister and himself.” Both men looked at each other, their faces solemn. “You came here to ask me for evidence and cooperate with me, right?” Jack asked in a deep voice.
Winson didn’t hide his intentions. “That’s right. We’re both descendants of the people involved in this case, and we should find out the truth.”
Jack raised an eyebrow. “I’m afraid you have other motives, don’t you?”
Winson smirked. “Yes, I suspect that the person who killed them years ago is now preparing to target the Murphy family. I came for Natasha’s sake. I only ask you, would you like to join this collaboration?”
Jack asked with seriousness, “Do you have any suspects?”
“Yes, aside from Eric, I also suspect…” Winson’s penetrating gaze fell on Jack’s eyes. “Andrew.”
He hadn’t suspected Andrew before he came. However, now he had changed his mind. He suddenly discovered that Andrew was linked to many things. For example, in their previous lives, Andrew helped Jack destroy the Murphy Group. In theory, the small conflict between Jack and Edmend should never have alarmed two major enterprises. However, Andrew allowed Jack, his favorite protégé, to take revenge against the Murphy Group because he was angry with Edmend. Jack was close to him, but Andrew teamed up with Eric. Obviously, this matter had nothing to do with Jack, but with Andrew. He and Eric may have been involved in the matter.
Jack stood up and rubbed his temple. “Are you crazy?”
Winson said lightly, “Just because he won’t harm your sister, doesn’t mean he won’t harm my uncle. Besides… you said yourself, the car’s blackbox was missing when your sister had the accident. The scrapped car had to be processed with Andrew’s approval. Who else could have taken it?”
This statement successfully made Jack, who was already on edge, quiet down. He said in a low voice, “I used to think that my dad took the blackbox. So I asked him, and he said that Nelson was just feeling guilty, so he took it.”
“Your father’s words directly accused my uncle. But don’t you think it’s strange? Or was he actually planning for you to die?”
Jack snapped, slamming his hand onto the table. “Shut up!”
Winson stood up and straightened his suit collar. “If you’ve made up your mind to work with me, then you can start by investigating your father’s previous collaboration with Eric. It’s really inexplicable, isn’t it?”
After a long silence, Jack looked up and met Winson’s gaze. “Fine, I’ll work with you. But don’t think that just because I agree to work with you, it means I believe you. I want to uncover the truth and prove you wrong.”
Winson smirked. “I welcome your corrections.”
He turned and left the room.
Jack sat despondently on the sofa and asked, “Do you think we can trust what Winson said?”
Only Jill was in the room with him.
Jill knew who he was talking about and immediately replied, “Jack, I don’t think Winson would come all the way here just to deceive you.”
Jack gave her a cold look. “Do you trust him?”
Jill didn’t hesitate. “I trust you, but what he said makes sense. Andrew is sometimes hard to figure out. And the blackbox incident doesn’t add up.”
Jack started rubbing his thumb and forefinger together.
After a while, he slapped his thigh and stood up. “Let’s go.”
Jill asked in confusion, “Jack, where are we going?”
“To find the truth!”
In Natasha’s POV, she came back from school in the afternoon and heard laughter and voices coming from the kitchen. Winson’s voice was also among them. Curious, she dropped her backpack and peeked into the kitchen, only to be shocked by the sight of Winson wearing an apron and baking with her mother. The maid at the door greeted her respectfully, and Winson smiled at her, inviting her to come in. Elsa, her mother, pulled her into the kitchen to show off their afternoon labor – a table filled with cookies. Natasha was puzzled and asked if the two of them had made all of them. Elsa nodded and said they were authentic.
In disbelief, I looked at Winson. “So, he just helped you out and you gave him a share?”
Elsa quickly explained, “Of course not. I provided the recipe this time, and Winson did the baking. Look, it looks so great!”
Winson casually picked up a cookie and handed it to me. “Your mouth is your best feature, so taste it and you’ll know if it’s Auntie’s work.”
Reluctantly, I opened my mouth and ate the cookie Winson handed me. He asked expectantly, “How is it?”
To my surprise, Winson’s cookies were sweeter than my mom’s, but still very tasty. However, I said lightly, “It’s too sweet.”
Elsa poked her forehead and scolded me playfully, “You’re impossible. I normally make them less sweet to help you take care of your teeth, but today Winson made them sweeter just for you. You still complain. You’re such a hard customer to please.”
“Reviewing food should not always be positive,” I defended myself.
Winson indulgently looked at me and said, “It’s okay. I’ll improve next time.”
