Mrs. Barnett went pale as she took a couple of steps backward. She looked so panicked, “What- What are you talking about? Cristelle got pregnant because she messed around a lot. She slept with some man when you were away. That’s why she got pregnant.”
“Stop lying, Mom!” Diego grabbed her collar, shouting, “You need to tell me the truth.”
The assistant just made it here. He went forward to stop Diego, “Diego! What the heck are you doing?! You need to let her go!”
Diego, however, was out of his mind right now. He pushed the poor man away, “This is none of your business. You stay out of this.”
Diego’s eyes were only on his mother, “Tell me the truth! I won’t let it go until I know the truth from you!”
He had tried to find Cristelle so many times, but his mother had tended to stop him every time. She even took him to see the pregnant Cristelle, telling him she was bearing a baby for another man. Finally, she said that Diego should give up.
Diego had been young and proud. He had thought Cristelle really betrayed him. So he married Julia instead.
However, everything just turned out to be a lie.
Diego hated the fact that his mother betrayed him, but he knew there was nothing he could do. He hated his mother for setting them apart.
He also hated himself for not finding out the truth.
Did he really care about money more than he cared about Cristelle?
“Say something! Now!” Diego shouted to his mother like a crazy man. Mrs. Barnett cast a look at the assistant. The assistant stood up and left the room, closing the door behind him.
“Diego, everything I ever did is for you,” Mrs. Barnett faintly stated.
So Cristelle told the truth.
Diego coughed and spat a mouthful of blood.
Mrs. Barnett was stunned for a second. When she started to speak, her voice didn’t even sound like her own, “Diego?! Diego! Are you okay, son?”
“Get away from me!” Diego pushed her away, hissing, “You never considered my happiness. All you care about is the wealth of the Barnett family. I’m just a chess piece for you!”
Mrs. Barnett went forward, trying to touch his face, “You’re my son. Why would I treat you like a chess piece? The Friesley family was falling at that time. Cristelle’s father was in jail, and her mother committed suicide. Even her sister had run away. If you still insisted on marrying that jinx, she would ruin your life! You’re my son. You always deserve the best. Don’t you understand?”
“You shouldn’t have lied to me. You shouldn’t let her go through such pain.”
Diego couldn’t imagine how desperate Cristelle must have felt back then. She was a flower. She should have been spoiled, but he failed to protect her.
It was more than that.
He was the one who brought her pain. Mrs. Barnett thought for a while, “It was an accident. I didn’t expect her to get pregnant so easily. That was why I used her pregnancy as an excuse.”

Tears covered Mrs. Barnett’s face. It broke her heart to see her son act like this. She went forward to make him sit down, “Fine. I will tell you everything I know. Actually…”

The door was kicked open. Sam walked in.
He was so pissed off as he saw his son, “You’re finally back?! Look at you! You look like a piece of shit! You don’t look like my son at all. It was just bankruptcy. Why can’t you just pull yourself together? I don’t have a coward son like you!”
Mrs. Barnett shut up instantly. Diego also realized that Mother wouldn’t say anything anymore. She was scared of his Father too much.
“Dad, I can’t leave this country,” Diego said coldly.
Sam’s face changed. He was even more disappointed by his son, “Are you still gonna stay here? Do you want to bury yourself here? We have nothing in this city anymore.” Sam was enraged that he started to cough.
Diego shook his head, “I won’t stay in this city. I’m going back to our hometown. And I’m gonna find Julia. I will ask for Noah’s help, and I will start it all over again in our hometown.”
Once he returned, he would get the chance to know the truth.
After hearing what Diego had said, Sam looked at his son differently. Diego was not stupid after all. Sam took a long breath, “But you and Julia have divorced. Noah probably won’t help you.”
Diego looked quite confident, “It’s okay. Julia will definitely come back to me if I ask her back. The Lim family just has to help when we’re together.”
