Chapter 33
I’m sorry grandma, I promise I’m going to make everything alright. I’m going to make sure you’re fine. You gonna be alright” Alfred said giving her assurance but deep down grandma Teresa knew there was no hope. She knew everything was never going to be fine, she was not going to be fine. she knew it was over for her. Her days on earth were complete.
She’s dying already, she can feel her spirit leaving her body, slowly . She was going to die and nothing could stop it but you know her greatest joy, she has hope, she believes everything is going to be fine with Alfred again as far Lisa is by his side.
She believes he’s going to have that peace of mind he’s always craved for.
“Grandma I promise you, you’re going to be fine” Alfred said and grandma nodded. He just didn’t want to let his hopes down so she just stared at him as he assured her.
Just then Alfred heard his phone . He stared at the caller’s ID and quickly wiped his tears then walked out of the ward.
He walked out of the hospital, and hopped into his car then drove off.
Immediately Alfred left, Lisa walked inside the ward and sat beside grandma on the bed.
“Grandma” Lisa smiled at her as she placed her hands on hers.
“Lisa, my child. I know Alfred had done terrible things to you in the past but please do not hold anything against him. Please forgive him” grandma said and then she smiled at Lisa.
“I see you as a light Lisa” Lisa smiled at her and kissed her forehead.
“Should I sing for you grandma? ” she said, trying to change the topic since she was feeling so uncomfortable.
“Nah!! I’m not a fan of music but since it’s from you, yes sing for me please ” grandma said smiling. Even in the smile Lisa could still see sadness in her eyes. She wasn’t completely happy and that look on her face. This was the same look she saw in her face the first time they both saw each other, she was hiding something but she felt like saying it but she’s still holding herself back from saying it. Lisa quickly shook off the thought.
“It’s my mom’s favorite song,” Lisa said as she started singing the song. When she was done with it, she stared at grandma smiling at her.
“Lisa” she called as tears slipped down her cheeks.
“Grandma” Lisa called and swallowed hard.
“There’s something you need to know…” she paused and coughed slightly.
“What’s it grandma?” Lisa asked concerned.
“I have been keeping this up for years after the death of my daughter. I haven’t told anyone about it not even once” she exhaled deeply and placed her hands on top of Lisa’s.
“Lisa………” she coughed and this time she coughed blood.
“Grandma” Lisa called out
“I….. I…” she started coughing out blood non stop.
“Doctor!!!” She yelled at once and immediately the doctor came.
“Ma’am please excuse us” a nurse said and she nodded before walking outside the ward.
She stood outside and watched how the doctors ran halter scatter trying to survive her but guessed it was too late. She was already dying. Lisa closed her eyes as tears slipped down her cheeks.
“Time of death” she heard the doctor say.
“She gave up. She’s gone”more tears ran down her cheeks.
Suddenly, she heard a familiar voice from behind, it was Alfred coming in with his phone on his ear.
Suddenly again she saw Andrew coming from behind too.
“Are you sure the papers are ready?” Alfred asked Andrew who was behind him as he placed his phone back in his pocket.
“Yes, the doctors are prepared to welcome us,” Andrew said.
Lisa, who could hear their conversation, quickly wiped off her tears as she saw them.
Suddenly Alfred’s eyes drifted to grandma’s ward and he saw nurses and doctors going out and walking in. He then turned to Lisa who was now staring at him. Then he saw tears in her eyes.
“What’s going on?” Andrew asked as he saw the whole scene.
“It’s grandma ” Alfred said and ran inside the ward where she met a nurse covering her with a piece of cloth and another nurse taking a recording with a doctor standing with his phone on his ears.
“No!! No!! This can’t be” Alfred muttered
“I’m sorry Mr Alfred, we tried our best” the doctor said and with that he walked out of the ward.
“Alfred please calm down ” Andrew said and placed his hands on his shoulder. He felt tears gathered in his eyes, he tried pushing them back because he wanted to act like a man but he couldn’t. He loved his grandma so much.
He rushed out of the ward he turned and started punching the walls.
“This is all my fault ” he kept yelling as he punched the walls.
“Stop Alfred ” Andrew yelled out and held him.
“Calm down man ” Andrew said and hugged him so tight and immediately the tears he’s been holding for long finally.
“This is all my fault Andrew, I took her away from me. If I had let her stay with me, all this wouldn’t be happening. I feel so weak Andrew, I couldn’t-do anything to save her. I couldn’t save her ” Alfred cried on his shoulder like a baby.
“It’s not your fault Alfred, it’s no one’s fault” Andrew said as tears slid down his cheeks.
Meanwhile Lisa is seen standing at a corner watching the whole incident take place from the beginning. She understands how Alfred feels, the pain of not wanting to. lose someone you love the most, pain of not wanting to lose someone you care for
She felt the same way when she lost her mother and at a time she blamed herself too for not being able to save her when she should have, but guess that was fate.
Grandma is gone, Alfred just needs to understand and accept the fact that she’s gone. Lisa sighed softly as her eyes came in contact with that of Andrew.
But then again on the other hand Lisa began to wonder what grandma was about telling her before she died. She wondered what it was.
