Vivian POV
I stopped on my tracks, swirled around to gaze at Max.
” At this point, would you want to go against your father because you feel unsettled leaving me with him?” I demanded with a questioningly look. Although I had felt a bit tensed at Max’s father sudden request, I still didn’t see reasons why Max was even more uncomfortable with it than I was.
Perhaps, there was something he wasn’t telling me that I should know right? One thing that was sure in Max’s family was; there was really dirty secrets that I don’t know of. Secrets that could shatter everything they’ve worked for over decades and no matter how curious I was to find out about it, I wasn’t in a rush to dig deeper into it because I feel like it might affect my own life if I did so.
“I don’t mind going against him this time around. It’s not safe being with him alone and that’s final. You’re my wife not his and only I has the right to do whatever I want” He said colly and walked past me. My feet was rooted to the ground as I watched his back, Max was utterly pissed.
Just what was this thing that made him this worked up? I pondered relentlessly and walked after him.
We got out of the mansion and immediately, the guards rushed towards us.
“Get out! ” Max snapped at all of them and they instantly disassembled. I was stunned, watching Max as he pulled open the door of the car and hopped in.
Had he suddenly forgotten that I was coming with him? I stopped as he stepped on the acceleration and turned the car to face upfront them drove out.
What’s wrong with him? Max had just left me, totally forgetting that I was going to see my Mom today.
Still in thoughts with a disappointed look, I heard the sound of the car door as Max drove back, stopping right beside me as he whined down one of the bass windows.
“, Get in” His voice came as an order but feeling the ego rise in me once more, I ignored him and stormed out of the mansion, heading out to flag down a taxi.
“Fuck!” He cursed out loudly behind me as he alighted from the car.
Exactly what I wanted! I smiled, giggling inwardly at how my antics could work so effortlessly.
“Fucking get in the car Vivian, I really do not want to do this now, it’s still too early” He ranted as he came behind my back. Just then, I saw a cab racing forward and extended my hands to flag it down but Max had quickly held down my hands and lifted me up to his shoulders.
“I guess you love things the rough way huh?” He said, as he turned around and strode towards the car while I kept hitting his back to let me down on my feet.
“You drove off leaving me here alone simply because I not binding to your request. If you’ve got a stiff tie with your father then why take it out on me. Let me go, it’s better I take the cab!” I yelled but before I could make further movements with my body, Max had already dropped me inside the car and slammed the door shut to my face.
Walking to the other side of the car, he opened the door and sat down and in one acceleration he gave, he drove off in high speed, ignoring my yells for him to slow down.
_____
It wasn’t long before we arrived at the hospital, as usual, the premises bustled busily with different kind of people striding in and out. Max sat still, as if unwilling to get out, his gaze fixed on what I didn’t know.
“Aren’t you getting out?” I asked and he nodded, the cue that he wouldn’t follow me inside. But earlier, I had thought he wanted to see my Mom and even though I had suspected that as untrue since he dressed officially, a part of me still wanted Max to see my Mom. After all, I still owed him the gratitude of paying off her surgery bills and despite my ignorance to accept that fact, deep inside me, I was grateful.
Without much hesitation as Max could change his mind anytime soon, I got out of the car, arranging my dress properly and walked into the hospital.
“Vivian” Max called out behind me and I halted, turning around to see him stick out his head through the car window with a cap covering his forehead from recognition.
” Stay safe” He said and with that, he stuck his head back to the car, whirled the car around and drove out.
Where was he going? I questioned within myself as I bit my lips with the last of the car disappear. Somehow, Max’s words ran through me with anxiety. I wondered why he told me that.
Suddenly, the flash of the words I heard from Daniel and his fiance stuck a replay in my head and my mind quickly flipped on alert.
Damn! I needed to tell Max! I had completely forgotten. What if something happens to him on the way? But then, I wasn’t with my phone, I had forgotten to take it! I quickly opened the handbag that I held and searched through it, hoping and praying that it might miraculously be inside and to my astonishment, I found my phone.
Max had definitely put it in
These days, he doesn’t fail in surprising me.
Swiping across the screen, I searched through my contacts quickly, my mind growing dire with fear in each passing seconds. It felt like the more time was ticking, the faster he was closer to trouble.
I finally found Max’s contact and dialed it with a racing mind.
The call rang out first, twice then the third and fourth. I became highly dispirited, praying fervently he picked up and in the fifth ring, it connected.
