It was to alleviate the oppressive pain in his heart during moments of longing.
Although they were divorced, in his heart, Callie would always be his wife.
Nelson cautiously approached her, stopping just half a step away.
“Do you still want to keep hiding things from me?” He stared at Callie, his gaze burning as if he could see through her.
Callie averted her gaze and pulled back from him. She simply stated, “Nelson, we’re divorced. There’s nothing between us anymore… Please return my daughter to me.”
“Is it really over, Callie? Actually, it’s simple to find out the truth in this modern age with advanced technology. It wouldn’t take much time for a DNA test…”
But he chose not to use technology.
Because he believed in his intuition. In other words, he preferred to believe in Callie. He didn’t think that during their short separation, she would choose to be with someone else.
“Enough.” Callie took a deep breath. “I have already been with someone else. Grape has nothing to do with you.”
Nelson thought he couldn’t feel any more pain, but upon hearing those words, it felt like a needle pricked his heart. “Someone else? Is it Nick?”
Callie was surprised.
He actually knew Nick. It seemed that he had investigated her before this.
“Yes,” she said firmly.
In the next moment, Nelson’s dark eyes narrowed. He grabbed her wrist and forced her back into a corner. A strong sense of oppression overwhelmed Callie, making her feel like she was suffocating.
“Callie… Are you really…”
“Let go of my mom.” Before Nelson could finish his sentence, a young voice rang out. Grape had appeared behind him at some point and ran up to stand in front of Callie.
With all her strength, Grape pushed Nelson away. Her strength was not great, but Nelson loosened his grip and took two steps back.
“Grape…” Callie saw Grape and felt a sense of relief. She quickly crouched down and embraced her.
The image of the mother and daughter tightly hugging each other touched something in Nelson’s heart.
But before he could regain his senses…
Grape stood directly in front of Callie, looking at him with angry eyes. “Uncle, do not harm my mother.”
Nelson looked at the small figure in front of him, his Adam’s apple moving slightly.
For a moment, he didn’t know how to react.
“Grape…”
Grape snorted and immediately retorted, “You’re not my father. I don’t want you to be my father…” The father she yearned for was like a towering tree that shielded her and her mother, an impregnable wall, and a heroic figure. He was by no means a sword that would hurt her mother.
If her father was like that, then she would rather… not have a father.
“Grape…” Callie’s voice was hoarse as she spoke. She looked at Grape, her eyes slightly moist.
This was a situation she had never anticipated.
“Mom… He’s not my dad, right? Dad wouldn’t make you angry. Dad would love you very much…” The innocent words filled the room.
Each word struck Nelson’s heart.
He felt an overwhelming sense of suffocation and pain deep within him.
He was not a responsible husband.
And definitely not a qualified father.
Callie had never imagined that her daughter, who was just over a year old, could be so understanding and make one’s heart ache.
“Grape, go home with me.”
