Maya’s POV
I was brimming with excitement and anxiety that both emotions bothered on hyperactivity. I felt like a child again. I felt like I was finally living after all these days of feeling dead and numb.
Who could have believed that it was Kevin and Ella who made me go numb and dead inside and it was also because of them that I would feel alive again?
I was excited. This was my chance to get back at Kevin for breaking my heart and Ella for stealing the position that belonged to me.
I loved karma. I couldn’t believe it was finally working for me after all these years and deciding to fight on my behalf. They shouldn’t have messed with me. In Kevin’s next life, I hoped he would think twice before hurting another female.
The only person I felt for in this revenge scheme of mine was Liam but I didn’t care much about him as much as I cared about what I was to do. He was going to be affected as he was always by Kevin’s side and also going to be heartbroken as he was an annoyingly loyal beta wolf to the alpha but that wasn’t going to stop me. Thinking of Liam and how he would feel had never stopped me from going after what I wanted and doing what I wanted.
If I had always considered Liam, I wouldn’t have slept with Kevin in the hopes to make him declare me as his mate despite how much Liam warned me not to get closer to Kevin in the broken state that he was in.
Silly me, I had thought the broken state would make him easy prey and decided to try my luck. I had become unlucky instead.
Maybe if I had considered Liam’s feelings and words before taking action the other day, I wouldn’t be in this mess and wouldn’t be plotting a revenge that could get me in trouble.
I snorted. The past was done and there was no point sweating over it. It was time to move on with the present now.
I powdered my face, preparing to go out after hiding my face from society for so long because of Kevin’s mating to Ella.
I had a purpose now and I didn’t need to hide away again. I got a pitcher and balanced it on my head as I moved to the river, knowing I wasn’t going to fetch anything. I was only going there to spread some gossip and didn’t want it to look like that was my sole reason for being outside.
“Look who came out of her cave.” Sasha taunted as she saw me walking towards them at the river.
Just the girl I was looking for. I had to try so hard to scowl and keep my smile off my face so she wouldn’t know that I was happy to see her and her friends.
“Why shouldn’t I come out?” I said, hoping she would steer the conversation in the way I wanted.
She did and I almost started dancing with glee at that point.
“We thought you weren’t going to mourn till old age because the man you wanted didn’t want you.” Selena mocked, scooping water into her bucket.
I snorted. “Why should I keep mourning over what doesn’t want me? It’s his loss.”
The girls laughed at me. “It’s your loss, girl. Don’t act strong. We know you still want to be in Ella’s shoes.” Sasha laughed.
“It’s good to hear you sound like a grown though.” Sarah smirked.
I was older than these idiots but I wasn’t going to get mad at them for their comments. I wasn’t here to pick a fight with them. I could feel my chance slipping away as they prepared to leave and quickly seized it right by the horn, slipping myself into the conversation.
“If there is anyone who should have regrets till old age, it isn’t me but your alpha who got mated to a woman who doesn’t love him as much as he loves her.”
They seemed interested and turned to me. “What do you mean?”
I lowered my voice. “Didn’t you hear that Luna ran away from the palace with the kids?”
“No way.” They echoed in surprise. “You are making this up.”
“Ask anyone who is a maid at the palace that you know. Oh! You can’t because the alpha’s father isn’t letting anyone out of the palace so no one outside would know of the Luna’s disappearance and how the alpha isn’t also in the palace because he went after her. Have you seen anyone outside even though they should have taken their leave by now? Don’t you think it’s weird?”
I had their attention now. I watched as they began to discuss among themselves and agreeing that I could be right. I picked up my pitcher and walked away, knowing that the rumor would spread across the town before dusk.
I wondered if any of them noticed that I didn’t fetch any water.
Nathan’s POV
We were back at school and we were back to dealing with Eve. At first, I was willing to give her a chance and thought Neo was being super distrustful by not liking her immediately but as I saw more of the girl, I knew we couldn’t trust her. She was as unstable as the flames of fire in a breezy room.
We had thought she had gotten tired of Melody the other day and wasn’t going to talk to her again but we had thought wrong. Eve wasn’t a girl that gave up easily or could be easily understood and had decided that Melody was the prey she was going to latch on.
“Good morning, Uncle Liam. Boys.” Melody said as she got to school and saw us walking to school, joining us.
“Is there a problem, Melody?” Uncle Liam said as he saw her. “You look stressed.”
“I couldn’t stop thinking of Eve and how hurt she had been yesterday. I have an headache to pay for it now.” She replied, rubbing her forehead.
I rolled my eyes. Bless her sweet heart. She worried too much for someone she didn’t have to think of.
Neo groaned beside me and I could feel his anger even before he spoke. I felt pity for Eve without having seen her today, knowing that Liam was going to lash out his exasperation on her.
“I thought you were told not to worry about her.”
“I didn’t want to. I was…” Melody tried to defend herself.
“Don’t do anything.” I said.
Uncle Liam smiled at how we were doing our best to comfort Melody. “I think you all should start walking faster now. You are almost late.”
“Bye.” We all waved at him and moved to school.
“Melody.” Eve called her name just as we stepped into the classroom.
I went still at the sight of her and the smile on her face, wondering what was wrong with her. Why was she smiling like an innocent angel right now? Didn’t she know what she did? Did she lose her memory between yesterday afternoon and now?
She was standing by our seats with a smile and I knew without much investigation that she had been standing there and waiting for us for a while.
“Good morning, Eve.” Melody replied, plopping into her seat without smiling at Eve.
I sighed. She was really stressed for her to act that way. Neo took his seat beside her and glared at Eve but didn’t say s word. I was amazed that he only kept it a glance.
“Is there something wrong with you?” Eve asked, peering at Melody.
Melody winced. It was obvious she didn’t want to say anything but didn’t want to be rude to Eve as well. “I have an headache so if you would please keep the friendly clingy attitude to a minimum today, I would be grateful.”
“Oops.” Eve sighed. “An headache? I’m sorry to hear about that. I have some drugs you can use for it if you don’t mind.”
Melody arched her eyebrows at her. I was surprised too. “Are you a nurse?”
Eve chuckled. “No.”
“How do you always have everything?” I asked.
She frowned, her facial expression falling flat. “You can say you don’t want to collect the drugs if you don’t want to, you don’t have to keep on insulting my kindness.”
Melody probably sensed that she was about to start rolling out the accusations and she didn’t want that so she extended her hand to Eve. “Let me have the drugs please. You all are going to make my head worse if you start arguing like that.”
Eve smiled as if Melody had just asked for her account details and dipped her hand into a small pouch she carried, producing a strange looking pill.
“Are you sure that pill isn’t poisonous?” Nick asked, sounding concerned as he shifted his gaze between the pill and Eve.
I was also concerned and would have asked that question if Nick hadn’t beaten me to it. Never had I seen such a green pill in my life. It looked ominous.
Eve colored up. “You all have started with your accusations, haven’t you? Would I want to kill Melody?”
Nick sighed. “We didn’t say that. We were only worried and wondering if you gave her the right pill.”
“I did. I gave her what she needed.” Eve said and then turned to Melody, patting her on the shoulder. “You should take the pill. Everything would be over once you do.”
“Thank you.” Melody said to her.
The homeroom teacher walked in at that moment and Eve had to scurry off to her seat to sit beside the partner she didn’t try to talk to. If she spent half of the energy she spent on Melody on others, she wouldn’t be lonely as she acted to be and would have more friends in school by now.
“Are you going to use that drug?” I heard Neo whisper to Melody.
I didn’t have to strain my ears to hear them as we were directly behind them and my supernatural sensitive ears were working just fine.
“No. I don’t like pills. I only took that so she wouldn’t accuse me of being rude again.” Melody replied.
I smiled. Thank goodness. I guessed I didn’t have to worry so much about Melody.
The class teacher finished calling out the names and dropped a shocking announcement on us as she walked away.
“There would be a school trip at the end of this week. You should all prepare for it and also tell your parents.”
The whole classroom burst into excitement, cheering and clapping their hands. I wasn’t a bit thrilled by the news. The blood drained from my face and I could see that my brothers mirrored the expression on my face.
A school trip? That was the surest way of making Melody a threat to her enemies. Anything could happen to her and there was no way we could explain to the teachers not to let her go, that was even if we could convince Melody not to go.
I sighed as I stared at the jubilating students with us who weren’t aware of the dangers that lurked around.
Keeping Melody safe just became complicated.
