Kevin’s POV
“Ella! Ella! Wait up!” I shouted her name.
She should have turned at the first call. She was a werewolf with heightened hearing and shouldn’t have difficulties hearing her name when called especially when I was calling her at that distance. She should have heard me as I wasn’t far to her. Not answering at the first time she was called could only mean one thing. She was distracted and was lost in her thoughts.
Did she always have to make me panic? I sighed as I continued running. A distracted person on a dangerous path such as this was as good as prey for the wild and strange creatures here, an easily killed prey at that.
The kids didn’t hear me call as well but I didn’t blame them for that. They were still young and their senses weren’t as heightened as their mother’s would be. Moreover, I knew without a doubt that they would be tired already with exhaustion from the long walk that they had been dealing with. That was also another disaster in the making. A tired wolf would have their senses dulled and it was worse if they were wolves who hadn’t had their senses developed yet.
I couldn’t help but panic harder and ran faster.
“Ella!” I called again.
She heard and turned back, looking surprised to see me and then still surprised to see Liam. I was relieved she had finally seen me and sagged with an obvious show of it as I relaxed my pace to walk to where she was instead of running as I had been doing earlier.
“Kevin!” She gasped. “Liam.” She sighed as she glanced at Liam who gave her a polite shrug.
“Dad!” The triplets shouted with glee as they turned and saw me. “Uncle Liam.” They breathed his name as they stared at him, the smiles on their faces fully intact.
They didn’t move closer to us though and stayed where they were even though their expressions told me that they were super excited to see me. I guessed they were too tired to walk back to the distance they already walked past no matter how welcoming they wanted to be and would rather have me walk the distance to meet them.
I hid my chuckle at how smart they were and smiled at them instead before moving my attention to their mother.
Her expression suddenly changed and she looked ashamed of herself as if she just remembered where she was, why she was there and why she had made me hot on her trail. I wanted to move closer to her and hug her. I wanted to tell her that she didn’t have to be ashamed and that I wasn’t mad at her. I wanted to tell her that I loved her for caring about my years and getting worried for my sake. I wanted to spank her though for coming on this crazy journey without telling me and driving me crazy.
I didn’t do any of everything I wanted to do to her except one thing as I moved closer to her.
“Are you okay?” I asked her instead of the many questions that I would love to ask her, waiting on my tongue to be blurted out.
“I’m fine.” She sighed, moving closer to me.
“Thank goodness.” I breathed, moving closer to her and closed the gap between us.
She sagged into my arms and l leaned into her, resting her head on my shoulder as I moved my hand into her hair, letting her feel the warmth and love I was sending her through her skull. The boys also moved closer to hug me, holding me tightly by the legs and I smiled as I felt my complete family all around me.
Liam stood by and watched patiently without saying a word. I wished for him to have his own family as soon as possible.
She raised her head to look at me and sighed. “I hope you aren’t angry at me.”
I smiled at her words which were actually a question. “What would you do if I was angry with you? Would you go home with me?”
She snorted. “I can’t go home, Kevin. Did you see Elizabeth before coming here? I am sure you must have seen her for you to know that you have to come here to find me.”
I sighed. “I know you wouldn’t come home with me. I saw her. I only said that to see if I could try my luck.”.
She chuckled and pulled away, leaving the comfort of my arms but still smiling at me. “What is there to say to try your luck? We have a mission to accomplish and we need the presence of the boys to achieve it. Can you go alone to the human world to do it? How will you get the girl to open up to you? How will you get the boys to behave if you go with them and send me back home? You would go crazy if you stay with them alone for more than two days and I’m sure you can’t last alone without me.” She arched her eyebrows at me. “Do you still want me to go home?”
I smirked, knowing she had caught me. There was no way I could be alone with the kids and keep them safe in an unfamiliar world while doing the research I needed to do and finding the girl. As much as I hated to admit it, I needed Ella to last the journey in the human world.
She saw the answer on my face and smiled. “What do you think? Should I still go home?”
“No.” I sighed, shaking my head with a defeat that resonated through my veins.
“I think you should go home though.” She said to me.
“Why should I?” I asked, confused. Didn’t she just say that this trip was for all of us to be present at?
“The pack needs their alpha. You can’t be gone for too long. I doubt that you’ve prepared enough for that. Did the red witch tell you that the trip would last for three months?”
I was about to reply even though I didn’t know what I was going to say when the boys interrupted our conversation. She was right that I hadn’t planned for the long absence. I had thought I wouldn’t be absent for more than two weeks at most.
“Aren’t we going on the trip again, mummy?” Nathan asked.
“Daddy is here. Let’s go for the ad…” Neo said and I wondered what he was trying to say.
“Adventure.” Ella smiled as she turned to him.
“Yes, that.” He grinned and I found myself grinning at him.
It was funny to me how he said that to what Ella said as if he knew what she said all along when the truth was glaring that he didn’t know what it was and he couldn’t stress himself to twist his tongue to call it.
“Let’s go have the fun you promised, mum.” Nick cheered.
“Yes. Let’s go.” Ella said, giving me a meaningful look.
I sighed as I walked side by side with Ella, knowing we would get to talk another time when the kids are asleep and also hoping that nothing untoward happened to them so they would think that this was fun all through.
