Liam’s POV
“It’s time for us to leave.” Kevin said to Zeke who had been embracing his daughter for an eternity and seemed like he was going to be there with her in his arms for another century if he wasn’t pulled away from her.
“I know.” He groaned. “I just can’t seem to let go of Ella yet.”
“You can follow us.” Damien suggested. “After all, we are going to your house.”
“I wish I could but I have a meeting with Oscar Nelson.” Zeke replied.
Kevin cleared his throat. The soldiers who were going to escort us to Zeke’s house were already here thirty minutes ago and the time was already getting wasted. We had to hurry if we wanted to get home before dusk.
I glanced at the faces of the soldiers but they looked impassive because of their training I knew they must be feeling as impatient as we were.
I itched to get home though I wasn’t eager to live the drama that was bound to follow. I could already see Maya acting out and going crazy if she saw Ella with us, but that wouldn’t stop me. I had stayed too far from home already and needed to be back, not even the embarrassment that a sister could cause me could push me away.
“Zeke?” Kevin called out to him, glancing at the sky.
Zeke looked up and sighed, getting the message. “You are always impatient, son.”
Kevin chuckled. “It’s not my fault you are clingy, dad.”
The two of them laughed. Ella pulled herself from Zeke. “I have to go now, dad. I can’t keep everyone waiting for long.”
“Promise we will see each other soon?” Zeke asked, holding on to her hand.
“I will see you soon.”
“Don’t wait for too long before coming to check on your old man.” He smiled at her.
“I promise.”
“Good.” He smiled, pulled her in for a kiss on the forehead and let her go.
“I will send an invite to the mating ceremony to you when the date is fixed.” Kevin said.
“You better make it soon.” Zeke said.
“You bet I will.” Kevin smiled.
Zeke nodded. “Take care of my daughter.”
“I will protect her with my life and love her all my days.” Kevin pledged.
“Don’t lose your life. My daughter would be unhappy if you do that so protect your life.” Zeke said.
“I will protect him.” Ella and I said at the same time and smiled at each other.
“Thank you.” Kevin said to the two of us.
Finally, we were on our way and we got to Zeke’s house. Our belongings had already been packed the other day before Luke came to arrest us so there wasn’t much that we had to do. We got them, bid the blue river pack guards who had escorted us goodbye and then were on our way.
“What do you think they would be doing at home at the moment?” Damien asked as we walked out of the blue river pack territory and headed towards ours.
I was too tired to guess what they would be doing at home by the time we get home but I hoped my sister would have gone to bed. I considered telling the men to stop walking too fast but that would be a strange request and I didn’t want their attention on me.
I listened to the men take wild guesses on what would be going on at home but wasn’t interested in joining them.
“You seem awfully quiet.” Kevin said as he moved closer to me, breaking me out of the thoughts in my head.
I jolted to attention, wondering when he got closer to me. I thought he was busy talking with Ella. He laughed at the look on my face and his expression and next words that he said told me that he had read right the thoughts in my head.
“You think I would still be talking with my mate when I saw that my most trusted ally is sulking?”
I laughed at his flattery but was grateful for it.
He frowned. “What do you find funny?”
“You called me your most trusted ally. Don’t you think the compliment is too much, my lord?”
He chuckled. “That wasn’t a compliment. It was the truth.”
I sighed. He must be really determined to make me talk today. “How can I be your most trusted ally when Ella is there?”
“Ella is my mate. You are my beta and friend. The two of you have different roles and are important in my life. I didn’t go wrong when I called you my most trusted ally.”
“Thank you.”
“Why were you sulking?”
“I wasn’t sulking. I was quiet and that is usual of me.”
“You are a quiet person but you were unusually quiet earlier. You weren’t even listening to the others and smiling at their words. I don’t have to be a wizard to know that you were lost in your head.”
I sighed, knowing that he wasn’t going to leave until he got the truth. I looked around to make sure that Ella wasn’t nearby where she could hear us and breathed in relief when I noticed that she was laughing with the rest of the men.
“I’m worried for Ella when we get home.”
“Why?’
“Maya.” I whispered.
He sighed. “Everything would be okay. Don’t worry.”
I nodded, wishing he was right even though I knew that everything wasn’t going to be okay. After all, Maya was my sister and not his. I had been the one to grow up with her. I knew her and what she could do if she felt she was pushed into a corner.
I really hoped Kevin was right as I looked at the border of our land. We were almost home.
