Ella’s POV
I hissed first before going into a battle stance as I saw the owner of the offending voice. I saw the hideous mask first-which was all I needed to see to get me mad-before seeing the annoying arrogant swag in his gait.
A bloody rogue.
I growled loudly, feeling Lucy begging to be out. Despite my loud growls in my head, I could still hear the loud growls coming from the throats of the other wolves. I wasn’t the only one fueled by hatred and anger at the moment.
I doubted that the rogue was alone. As villainous as the rogues were, they were cowards who wouldn’t fight a battle that they weren’t sure they could win. They wouldn’t fight alone and if they had to do, they wouldn’t a group. They also made use of surprise to win their opponents.
Fine, we were surprised but that didn’t mean our surprise would stay for long to enable us to be defeated. We were much and I doubted that he was alone and crazy enough to fight us and hope he would win.
A Rogue wouldn’t have come to our paths willingly unless he had a death wish which I didn’t think this one had. His eyes sparked so much with danger and arrogance that I doubted he was willing to see the light in his eyes go dim anytime soon.
Soon after, he was followed by two dozens of men like him and the growling from the other men became louder.
We were outnumbered but that didn’t mean that were scared. Even if this was fated to be our last battle, we were determined to fight it with everything that we’ve got.
I found it sad that we were going to die so close to home without our kinsmen knowing where our bones were or what became the end of us. It was an irony that I was sure the rogues had thought of as well. I was no fool to believe that their being here was a coincidence. They certainly enjoyed the twist and with the way all their eyes sparkled, it was obvious they were eager to see our corpses lying on the floor and our flesh rotting away.
They could continue dreaming for all I cared. That might happen but it certainly wouldn’t be easy for them to see our backs lying on the ground and unconscious.
“What do you want?” Kevin growled, stepping forward.
The rogue who had interrupted me and obviously was acting as the leader of this group also moved forward. He wasn’t the leader of the race. I didn’t think Kenneth was here. I had been searching for him since they all burst out of their hiding place in the bush. I had a personal score to settle with the bastard who had sold me into slavery.
“Do you have to ask that question?” The rogue asked, smirking at Kevin. “We are here for your head.”
The wolves growled, moving forward, anger blazing in their eyes. Kevin raised his hand up, making a signal to them to stay put.
They hissed and stayed where they were, not moving an inch anymore but their eyes still charged with rage and their claws itched to get the rogues’ blood on them. I knew how they felt because I felt that way. I wanted to sink my claws so badly into the skins of the bastards that I was having trouble staying still. I didn’t care for the chitchat that Kevin and the rogue were having.
If Kevin wasn’t holding me by the hand, I had no doubt that I would have eventually flown over, plucked out the eyes of the rogue and started the fight that was inevitably going to happen.
What was the point of delaying something that was unavoidable?
The rogue continued. “If only you knew how long we had waited for you, you wouldn’t ask us that question. Ever since our leader told us that it was rumored that your girl escaped from her master’s house and we didn’t see you pass through the border and he sent a letter to inform us, we had been here knowing that you would have to come through this place.”
“Why are you telling us?” Andre hissed.
“Don’t you feel good that we went through all that stress just to have you?” He cackled. “Don’t you feel like you are precious to our dear leader’s heart?”
“I feel like you are crazy.” Damien hissed.
“You boys talk too much for a pack of big bad wolves.”
We all hissed out loud but didn’t move forward. The taunt was a goad and we weren’t going to rise to the bait. We weren’t going to attack until they did. That was the best way of studying their moves and overcoming them since they were much in number than we were.
“What kept you waiting?” He groaned and then shrugged, feigning indifference. “Whatever. Meet your doom.”
Kevin smiled. “You should be more worried about meeting your doom than worrying about mine. Haven’t you heard that it is best to avoid a wolf who is angry and you’ve certainly made me angry enough?”
The rogue snorted. “Let’s talk too much and fight.”
“I think we can all agree on that.” Liam growled.
“Don’t say that you haven’t been warned.” The rogue said and dipped his hand into his pockets, bringing out a wrapped paper and suddenly flicking out its content into the air towards us.
I coughed as the powder got into my nostrils and felt strange. I looked around and saw the others having the same reaction. I stilled, trying to know what the substance was judging by the reactions I was having and how strange I felt. I looked around at the others and my eyes widened in horror as I saw them stagger on their feet.
What could have made us weak like that? I gasped as the realization flooded into my consciousness at the same time that the bastard rogue smiled at us and talked.
Bastards. I should have known that they would play dirty. They weren’t a race of people who were known for playing honorably.
“It’s silver. You all would be weak to really fight against all of us. You shouldn’t have doubted me when I was warning you to prepare for your doom. It’s sad that you didn’t inhale as much as I would have liked you to or you would be on the floor by now.” He hissed. “Why did the wind have to blow away from you when I poured the powder?”
“Because nature doesn’t support cowardly bastards.” I hissed, fighting the urge to cough.
“Are you still talking?” He laughed. “You should try to save your energy to fight us if you want to leave here alive though I doubt that you would be doing that though.”
Kevin looked at all of us, trying hard to stand tall though we all knew he must be as tired as we all were. “Don’t give up, men. Fight with your last and to the last.”
“Yes, my lord.” We all shouted, fighting off the effect of the poisonous silver. We wouldn’t be able to shift but that didn’t mean we couldn’t fight still in our own flesh.
The rogues must have thought we were weaklings in our human forms and only stronger as wolves. They had thought wrong.
The group leader of the rogues laughed loudly at us. “I never believed I would see a day when a werewolf alpha would become a motivational speaker.”
“Believe it now so you can take the memory to your grave.” I hissed at him, my expression hard as I tried not to show how weak I was.
Our bodies were trying to fight off the poison and heal us but the process was slow because it was silver. The faster our immune system was working to get rid of the toxin, the more it was taking a toil on us and making us weaker.
We couldn’t afford to show that to our opponents though. We were dead meat the moment we did that.
His face crumpled with anger at my words. “I can see you are still arrogant if you have the energy to throw shades at me.” He looked back at the men behind him. “Charge.” He said, pointing at us.
I watched as the men charged towards us with a loud roar and sent a prayer to the moon goddess to save us. If there was any moment we needed her to be useful, it was now.
