Are you sure we can really do this?” I asked from my hiding place, my eyes narrowed and alert as I peeked around the wall, making sure the guards stationed nearby wouldn’t spot us.
Felix tugged on my shirt twice-our little signal for ‘yes.’
I turned to him, watching as the twinkle in his eyes and the wide grin stretched across his face as he gazed up at me- a particular gaze that always seemed to melt my heart.
I couldn’t help but smile back, ruffling his hair gently before shifting my attention back to the important task at hand.
So, you’re probably wondering why a beautiful woman and an adorable kid were currently hiding like we were plotting a bank heist. The answer is simple, really.
After what happened last night, I had refused to leave my room out of sheer embarrassment. No matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t bring myself to face Alexander. I mean, I was his wife, and I ran out when we were about to have sex! Just thinking about it made me cringe. I couldn’t face him, not even when Martha came by to urge me to join breakfast.
Felix, however, seemed to notice my mood and, being the sweetheart he is, came up with a brilliant idea. He suggested we go to his favorite amusement park- apparently, it was something I used to do with him before the accident. But there was a catch: we had to sneak out. Why? Because Alexander would never let us leave the house.
So here we were, hiding behind walls, trying not to get caught by the dozens of guards patrolling the property like we were in some kind of spy movie. In almost every corner of the mansion, you’d see people aimed with guns, guarding the place with intense focus. Seriously, who was this man? And why did he need this much protection?
I turned to Felix and crouched down to his level, keeping my voice low. “Felix, I’ve been meaning to ask you something. What does your daddy do exactly? I mean, what kind of job does he have?”
Felix stiffened at my question, his smile freezing for a moment before he opened the small notebook clutched in his hand. Picking up the pen, he quickly wrote, “Daddy is a very important man. He works for the government, and his business is very, very legal.”
I raised a brow at the emphasis on “very legal,” glancing back at him. He gave me a nervous smile, his eyes darting away before returning to watch my reaction.
Hmmm, something felt wrong here- something I couldn’t place a finger on.
After a moment of thinking, I nodded in understanding . “Ahh, that explains the guns!” I said with a clap “Daddy’s position must be pretty high. Seems like he’s not only hot but also filthy rich and powerful.” Hehe, I married such a perfect man.
Out of the corner of my eye, I noticed Felix’s brow twitching as he watched me. I opened my mouth about to say something but before I could speak, the sound of approaching footsteps froze me mid-sentence.
I gasped softly, and Felix mimicked me, his mouth forming a silent “o” of surprise. Without thinking, I scooped him up and pressed my back against the wall, holding my breath as the footsteps grew closer.
“Are we sure you heard something here?” a gruff voice asked in irratation. “If this is another false alarm, Jacob, I swear I’ll murder you.”
“I’m not joking this time! I really heard voices here,” Jacob retorted defensively. “We should at least check, just to make sure there’s nothing.”
The other guard let out an exasperated groan, clearly fed up with everything. “God, my break starts in a minute. I’m not wasting it chasing your imagination again. Last time you said you heard something, we ended up with a stray cat. If we find a dog this time, I swear I’m done…”
“I know, I know, but we still need to check. What if it’s something that actually gets the boss to notice us?”
“Yeah, right. Let’s just make it quick and get out of here.”
I swallowed hard, silently praying they wouldn’t come any closer. Felix clung to me, his small hands gripping my shirt as we waited.
As the footsteps drew nearer, my heart pounded in my chest, and I clung to Felix even tighter. Just when I thought we were about to be discovered, like a last minute saving grace, a sharp voice stopped the men in their tracks.
“Jacob, Emmanuel! What are you doing there? Didn’t you hear? The Madam and the young master are missing. The boss wants everyone to gather immediately and start searching for them!”
Felix and I exchanged a look, gulping nervously.
L-look for us? but we’ve barely been out for five minutes, and they already know we’ve escaped?!
“Y-yes! We’re on our way!” Jacob stammered nervously.
“Great, there goes my break,” Emmanuel muttered irritably under his breath, his frustration clear as he dragged his feet.
I let out a quiet sigh of relief as their footsteps retreated. Felix tugged on my sleeve, his eyes sparkling with mischief, as if to say, Let’s keep going.
God, this kid. Something told me he was really enjoying the chaos unfolding. But the real problem was… so was I.
“Let’s go!” I whispered, a grin tugging at my lips as we slipped past the security and out of the mansion.
Five minutes later, we stood by the road, and I raised my hand to hail a cab. A vehicle pulled up, and the window rolled down, revealing a middle-aged, bald man sitting in the driver’s seat.
“To the amusement park,” I said, and he nodded. Felix and I climbed into the cab, settling into the back seat.
Throughout the ride, I couldn’t help but notice the wide smile plastered on Felix’s face. His excitement was obvious, and it made me chuckle softly. Back at the mansion, everyone called him the “little demon,” but how could an adorable kid like this be a demon? Aside from the fact he didn’t like talking, he was the sweetest soul in the whole mansion.
“We’re here,” the driver’s voice pulled me out of my thoughts. I looked out the window and smiled as I realized we’d arrived at the amusement park.
As we stepped out of the car, I noticed the driver giving me an intense look, one brow raised as he outstretched his hand expectantly. I blinked at him for a few seconds, confused, before the realization hit me like a brick: I didn’t have any money!
Oh my God, how could I forget something so important?
“I-I don’t…” I stammered, fumbling over my words like a complete fool. However, Felix, the more responsible one between the two of us, let out a quiet sigh before digging into his little pockets. With an air of maturity that no child his age should have, he walked up to the driver and handed the bald driver some cash.
The driver took it, shot me a look that screamed utter disappointment, and then sped off without another word.
I turned to Felix, who was staring up at me with an expectant smile, his eyes glistening and his chest puffed out, looking proud of himself.
This made me giggle and I ruffled his hair. “Good boy, you are much smarter than me. Now should we go and have have some fun?”
Felix nodded eagerly as I took his hand, leading him toward the gates of the amusement park.
Finally, it’s nice seeing the outside world again.
