Jason..
“Is she awake?” I repeated seeing as he didn’t say anything.
“Just come here fast.” He said and hung up before I could say anything.
“What is it?”
“What’s going on?” Max asked and that’s when I realised that Max was still standing behind me.
“He said we should come!” I said excitedly as I ran out of the rooftop garden with Max running behind me.
“So is she awake?” Max asked as he ran. I ignored that because I also don’t know if she’s awake.
We took the elevator down to the second floor and as it went down, I kept tapping my feet restlessly.
There was this feeling of uncertainty lurking in my mind. I was excited because in those movies, when the comatose patient’s hands move, it means they’re waking up but Jade didn’t say anything about her waking up. Maybe they have to check her vitals first to see if she’s stable or does that mean she’ll be waking up soon?
We arrived at the second floor, dashed to Eve’s ward only to open the door and meet the doctor ready to leave the room.
“Doctor, is she awake?” I asked the moment I saw him but the look on his face told me otherwise. I didn’t even need him to tell it to me any longer.
“Mr Coleman, I’m sorry to tell you that the patient is still in a coma.” He said and I scoffed.
“Jade said he felt her move. Her hands moved!” I said with desperation.
“That could happen sometimes but that doesn’t necessarily mean that she’s awake.” The doctor explained.
“Then does it mean she’ll wake up soon?” I asked with a little hope. But his answer crushed it down to nothing.
“I’m sorry but we don’t know for sure if that’s a sign that she’ll wake up.” He said quietly.
“If you’re sorry then wake her up!!” I yelled in anger and stormed out.
“Jason.. wait!” It was Jade that called me but I didn’t even spare him a glance.
I didn’t even want to see him right now. I know it’s not his fault and he was simply excited just like I was but it’s just so painful when you’re given the highest form of happiness only for it to be taken away.
It’s like being taken to the highest cliff and getting pushed off it in the cruellest way ever.
It’s painful and heartbreaking.
“Jade, not now.” I mumbled and I walked away.
Right now, I just need some alone time. I need to be away from all this.
Because if I don’t leave, I might lose the little hope I have that she will wake up someday.
I took the elevator to the ground floor before running out of the hospital building and taking my car.
I drove for a long time with no place in mind until I saw a bar on the side of the road then I stopped there. It had an unusual name – Spanish night, but right now, I don’t care about the name.
“Hola!” Someone said the moment I entered the bar and I simply ignored her.
I walked straight to the counter and sat down on the stool there.
“Hola!” The barman said the moment he saw me taking my seat and I shot him a look.
“Oh, you’re English.” He said with a Spanish accent.
“I’m American.” I said quietly.
“Same difference.” He said smiling.
“What should I offer you?” He asked.
“Anything.” I shrugged in response.
“Okay, Rum or vodka?” He asked.
“Give me everything good.” I said quietly.
“Everything?” He asked with raised brows and I nodded in response.
“Okay, you’re going to be my tasting buddy.” He said smiling as he mixed the drinks.
“For Vodka, This is Chocolate Vodka.”
“This is Smirnoff ice.”
“This is New Amsterdam.”
“And for Rum, this is Bacardi rum.”
“And this is Captain Morgan Rum.”
He said putting all the five glasses on the table.
“Okay, let me taste them then.” I said taking the two Rums at once.
“I don’t think that’s how you taste them.” The barman joked and I smiled.
“Hola guapo! (Hello handsome)” A lady in a pink seductive dress came walking up to me but I shrugged in response.
“Irse (go away).” The barman said to her in Spanish and she walked away hissing loudly.
“What did you tell her?” I asked like I didn’t know.
“I told her to go away.” He said and I smiled.
“That’s nice.” I said.
“You don’t speak Spanish?” He asked and I smiled.
“I thought you knew that already.” I said taking a sip from the Smirnoff ice.
“I thought you were kidding.” He said and I smirked.
“Por supuesto que estoy bromeando ( ofcourse, I’m kidding)” I said back to him in Spanish.
“Por que actuaste como si no entendieras? ( Why did you act like you don’t understand)” he asked in Spanish.
“No queria molestias.( I didn’t want any disturbance.)” I said with a shrug.
“Me dejaran en paz si ven que no los entiendo ( they’ll leave me alone if they see I don’t understand them)” I said quietly.
“Eso es brilliante ( that’s brilliant)” he said laughing.
“Lo se ( I know) ” I said laughing with him. We talked about other things in Spanish and I told him how I had to learn Spanish when I was little because my father insisted that I knew at least five languages. So I can speak; French, Spanish, Chinese and Japanese with a little bit of Thailand along with my own language – English.
“Disculpe..” the barman said and disappeared into a room. I’m guessing he went to get more drinks. I was already half drunk and I was feeling good.
“Divertido vertex aqui Jason ( funny seeing you here Jason)” someone said behind me and I turned to face whoever it was. The person seemed a bit familiar and it was odd that he knew my name.
“Disculpe?( Excuse me?)” I said with furrowed brows.
“No me conoces?( Don’t you know me?” He asked and I hissed.
“Qui en eres? ( who are you?)” I asked.
“Soy marca ( I’m mark)” he said like that’s supposed to make me remember him.
“Soy Mateo ( I’m Matthew)” I said in response so he’ll know that what I’m asking him isn’t his name.
“No es divertido ( not funny)” he said, taking a seat beside me.
“Hola! Marca, como estas? ( Hello, Mark, how are you?)” The barman said the moment he returned and saw Mark sitting beside me.
“Permiso, Tengo que irme ( if you’ll excuse me, I need to leave)” I said getting up from my seat because I wasn’t feeling comfortable with that marked guy beside me.
“Cual es mi factura?( What’s my bill?)” I asked, not giving him the time to stop me from leaving.
“No, Eres mi companero de degustacion ( no, you’re my tasting buddy)” he said in response.
“Recuerda venir la proxima vez ( remember to come next time)” he said smiling.
“Bueno ( okay.)” I said as I staggered out of the bar.
“Jason!” I heard someone calling my name as I walked out of the bar but I didn’t even bother to answer.
I got out of the bar and breathing fresh air made me a bit sober.
“Are you just going to leave?” Mark asked the moment he came out of the bar and saw me still standing there.
“Why not?, He said I didn’t have to pay.” I said, frowning my face.
“You know that’s not what I’m talking about.” He said with a slightly raised voice.
“Who are you and what do you want from me?” I snapped angrily.
