Eve..
“Eve..” Max’s voice broke me from the trance I was in.
“Are you alright?” he asked, confused by the change in my mood.
“Never better.” I said smiling as I ate my food in delight.
We were currently at Ethan’s and I could swear that he made the best cream of mushroom soup.
“It’s just that you don’t like mushroom soup.” Max said and I scoffed.
“I like it right now, it tastes amazing.” I said in Glee and they both shared a look of confusion.
“What happened today?” I heard Max asked Ethan.
“Well, I went to the restroom and when I got back, I found them talking.” Ethan explained.
“And then that sly woman came in and started screaming which startled the customers and as I was about to ask them both to leave, you showed up.” Ethan explained to Max but he didn’t seem like he was buying it.
“How did she get like this then?” Max asked and Ethan shook his head in response.
“He didn’t divorce me.” I said happily.
“He didn’t?” They both looked shocked.
“Yes, it’s all a misunderstanding.” I said happily.
“How?” Max didn’t believe me so I had to explain it just like how Jason had told me.
I told them about the fraud issue and Clinton sending the documents to spite him.
“That doesn’t change how he’s treated you before.” Max said and I frowned.
“He said he missed me.”
“Max, he felt my presence, he even confessed to me.” I said.
“He confessed?, He told you he loved you?” Max asked and I shook my head.
“He didn’t say that but he meant it.” I said stubbornly.
“Even if he didn’t say it, how do you know he meant it?” Max asked, getting angry.
“I can feel it here.” I said, touching my chest.
“Max, he loves me and I know it.” I snapped at him.
“Eve, I want what’s best for you and he’s not the one.” Max said, infuriating me further.
“You don’t know that!” I yelled.
“I’m your best friend!” He yelled back.
“Calm down you guys, this is not the time to be fighting.” Ethan raised his voice but neither of us was ready to back down.
“You’re just blinded by your love for him.” Max yelled again and I slammed my hands on the table in annoyance.
“What? You have Ethan now so I can’t have my own happy ending too?” I hissed.
“Eve…” He gritted his teeth.
“You know it’s not like that.” He said but I wasn’t buying it.
“Yes, it is.” I snapped.
“I love him and he loves me too, why is that so hard for you to believe?” I yelled.
“Guys!” Ethan tried to talk but I snapped at him too.
“Stay out of this Ethan!” I said angrily.
“You see Max, whenever he’s there, I feel my heart start to pound and I have a tough time breathing and I feel airheaded like I’m in the clouds, if that’s not love, what’s it?” I yelled.
“Arrhythmia?” Ethan asked and I almost laughed.
“It’s love.” I said crying now.
“I love him and I know he loves me too, otherwise, he wouldn’t have come to the cafe today.” I said.
“What could he possibly want from me again if he doesn’t love me?” I asked but Max couldn’t find any words to say.
“It’s not like I have any political power or I’m some rich heir, I’m just a poor girl who isn’t a certified baker yet and still he came back for me.” I said, crying.
“Why can’t you just accept that and be happy for me?” I asked, still crying.
“I want to be happy for you, but what about Alice?” Max said and I scoffed.
“Why did he bring her along today and what about the bracelet?” Max said and I hissed.
“Gosh, this is so off-putting.” I hissed.
“They didn’t come together and Alice was lying, I have the receipt, the box and even the totes that came with the bracelet, how’s it her?” I asked but Max didn’t seem like he was ready to believe me and so I got up from my chair and turned to leave.
But I felt a wave of dizziness hit me and I stumbled backwards hitting my waist on the dinning making me yelp.
“Eve..” Max came to hold me but as soon as I felt better, I pushed him away.
“Leave me alone.” I said and walked to my room in anger.
He’s my best friend. Why can’t he just be happy for me?
I thought as I continued to cry hard. I could hear him still yelling outside with Ethan trying to calm him down.
“Max, Eve is an adult, you can’t make decisions for her.” I heard Ethan say and I nodded my head in acknowledgement even though I knew they couldn’t see me.
“I know she’s an adult but Jason is just a no go.” Max said and I scoffed.
What does he know?
“He’s done nothing but treat her wrong and then he comes to say a few words and it’s able to change her mind?” Max scoffed.
“Who was there for her in the past few days?” I heard him say and I hissed.
Is this what this is about? Who was there for me?
“I was there for her, me and you and not that good for nothing Jason.” Max hissed.
“And so what? Are you going to marry her?, Or do you want to set her up with someone you think is better off?” Ethan asked and I waited for his answer but it never came.
I heard the door to their room close which meant that they were no longer in the living room but in their own room which was a bit farther from the guest room so I couldn’t hear whatever they were saying.
“I missed you.”
“Over these past few days, I understood how much you meant to me.”
Jason’s words from earlier stuck to me like some kind of broken stereo on repeat and I fell asleep for a long time with a smile on my face.
I pray he comes tomorrow.
He has to finish what he was trying to say.
“The truth is I…” I remember him trying to say something.
He what?
What was he going to say?
