Chapter 53

Book:The Virgin Wife Published:2025-3-31

Eve..
It’s been six days since I left Jason’s home and all, I spent my entire day reading different books from different genres. All of them had a happy ending and it kinda made me a little jealous.
I couldn’t help but wish that it was me in the books.
Only if my life was a fairytale then maybe I’ll have a happy ending.
I was still in my own bubble when I heard my phone ring.
I thought it was max again and I was ready to lash out if he was calling to ask if I was alright but to my dismay, it was my mother.
I didn’t want to pick the call but I had to just in case it’s an emergency.
I picked the call after the third ring.
“Hello.” I said mustering up the courage to talk back if she said something to annoy me again.
“Eve, how are you my dear?” She asked and I hissed.
“Get to the point.” I said.
“Don’t be so cranky, come home.” She said in a loving voice, it made me sick.
“I’m not coming.” I said immediately.
“It’s about Jason.” She said and I frowned.
Jason? I scoffed. Are they now on a first name basis?
Or did he go to them to give them money since we’re divorced now.
“What about Jason?” I asked.
“Just come home, I’ll be expecting you at dinner.” She said and hung up making me hiss in annoyance.
“She didn’t even give me a chance to say no.” I grumbled.
“Your mom?” Ethan asked as he entered the kitchen and I nodded.
“Mothers!” He gritted his teeth.
“They’re supposed to be the ones that understand you best, but these days, I doubt that.” He said angrily, making me laugh.
“What’s funny?” He asked the moment he heard me laugh.
“It’s just that, I’ve never seen you so angry before, it’s quite a sight if you ask me.” I laughed even harder, making him smile.
“Well, it’s almost dinner time.” He reminded me and I groaned.
“Except you don’t want to go.” He said and I shook my head.
“I’ll go.” I said getting up and removing the apron from my body.
“I’ll help you return these books.” He said taking the pile of books I’ve been reading all day long.
“Thankyou.” I said, following behind him.
“Tell Max where I went for me, if i tell him, he’ll probably come to my home, which won’t go so well.” I said to Ethan the moment I grabbed my coat. He nodded and disappeared into the books section while I went out of the cafe and flagged down a taxi.
I told him where I was going and he drove straight there. We arrived at where we were going and I got off and took the stairs to their apartment.
I pressed the intercom and waited for someone to open the door.
The door opened revealing my little brother Isaiah.
“Good evening.” I said walking past him and entering the house.
“Why are you acting like a stranger?” He said, closing the door and following behind me.
“That’s what we are now.” I said, rolling my eyes.
I entered the living room and there they were, sitting down as if waiting for me.
“You’re here?” Dad said with a smile making me scoff.
Why do they all seem happy to see me?
“Let’s eat.” Mom said and everyone went to the dining table including me.
I sat down on the chair closer to the sitting room so I could bolt out when they said something to annoy me.
“I didn’t make anything fishy since you’re allergic.” Mom said as she served the food.
Strike one!
“Should I be thankful?” I asked with venom in my voice.
“You should just eat.” I heard dad say and I looked away in annoyance.
If I eat with these people, I’ll probably have indigestion.
Soon, all our plates were filled and they all started to eat and I cautiously took a bite of the meal and I hummed in delight.
Well, the food didn’t do anything wrong, I thought as I continued eating it.
“I’m glad you like it.” She said and I ignored her and focused on the food instead.
It tasted just the way I remembered it. Way before, my family became really poor and money driven. When we were still a little bit comfortable, my mother’s homemade tomato soup was my favourite thing to eat.
“So Jason came here the other day.” She said, making me stop eating and drop my cutlery.
“He told you, didn’t he?” I said coldly.
“Yes, he did.” She said smiling and I wondered if she’s gone senile.
Just how much did he give them that’s making them this giddy?
“He told me he loves you.”
“He’s right, we’re divorced.”
We both said at the same time.
“Divorced?” She snapped her head towards me in confusion.
“He loves me?” I frowned.
What’s going on?
“You are divorced?” She asked again and I nodded.
“What did you do?” Dad asked and I scoffed.
“What did I do?”
“So he’s the saint, he can’t do anything wrong because he’s rich?”
“Because he’s the heir to a big company, he’s void of faults aye?” I snapped angrily.
“That’s not what I meant.” He said in a gruff voice, making me laugh.
“Indeed.” I said getting up from my seat.
“I’ve lost my appetite, I’ll be going home now.” I said.
“Eve, wait.” Mom said getting up and following me alongside Isaiah leaving dad who continued eating his meal with no care in the world.
What a father!
“Eve, wait..” she said again, making me stop.
“Are you sure? He told me he loved you and he was even polite, he apologised for all the wrong doings he did in the past. Why don’t you give him a chance?” She said, making me grit my teeth in anger.
“You think I divorced him?”
“Why do you both always think so low of me?” I snapped angrily as I felt tears dropping from my eyes.
“That’s not what she meant!” Isaiah yelled at me and I scoffed.
“Because he came here and acted like a two goody shoe, I’m just supposed to forgive him and run back to his house so you people can continue receiving free money from him or so that dad can continue bragging around that his daughter is married to a rich heir?” I screamed and then it came.
A slap to my face.
From my own mother.
I touched my face where I got hit.
She seemed shocked as well that she raised her hands to slap me.
“Eve…” She mumbled quietly as her hands shook.
“I hate you.” I said with gritted teeth and i left the house slamming the door behind me.
I continued sobbing as I flagged down a taxi and got inside and told him the address to Ethan’s house.
“Here..” the taxi driver gave me a tissue to clean my face and I thanked him.
We arrived at Ethan’s place and I took the elevator immediately and when I got out, I ran to the door and knocked hard.
“Eve?” Max said the moment he opened the door.
“What happened to your face?” He asked, and I started sobbing again.
