Johnny stepped forward, still wanting to chase after her, but at that moment his phone rang.
He didn’t want to see who was calling, only wanting to keep Tilda from leaving.
But the ringtone got louder and louder. Even Tilda could hear it.
Before getting into the car, she paused, looking up at him. “Aren’t you going to answer? It’s Caroline, isn’t it?”
“I won’t answer it. Tilda, I’ll block her, okay? Please don’t go.” Johnny quickly ran over and grabbed Tilda’s arm.
Seeing this, Mr. Wales walked over and removed Johnny’s hand.
“Johnny, this is exactly what Tilda’s mother and I were worried about before and why we were hesitant to entrust our daughter to you. But when we saw you constantly attentive to Tilda, we could see your sincerity. That was why we agreed to your engagement. But you’ve disappointed my daughter so deeply. Maybe you and Tilda aren’t right for each other.”
“Mr. Wales… I had compelling reasons!”
“You may have them! As a man myself, I know there must be many social obligations, relationships, and work engagements that can’t be discussed. I’m not angry about that, but you betrayed Tilda’s trust and made her worry all night. As her father, I certainly can’t accept that.”
Seeing his daughter’s haggard and disappointed expression, Mr. Wales couldn’t help but feel heartbroken.
Johnny frowned, truly not knowing what to say.
On his way here, he had been thinking about how to tell Tilda about the child and how to be honest with her, but when they actually met, she hadn’t even gotten to the point of asking about the child!
If he had known it would be like this, he would have never stayed at the hospital yesterday.
“I didn’t expect that she would come looking for me…”
Johnny had thought that with Tilda’s personality, she would either be very angry or simply go back to her parents’ house to sleep! But he never imagined she would be out looking for him out of worry.
“Think about it yourself. Don’t block the way. Johnny.”
Mr. Wales escorted his daughter into the car and then walked around to the driver’s seat.
Johnny stared blankly as the car drove away, watching until it disappeared from his sight, feeling a sense of loss.
He suddenly ran forward, wanting to chase after them, but how could a human being outrun a car?
In his pocket, his phone was still ringing desperately.
Johnny answered in anger. “Caroline, are you satisfied now? Tilda and I broke up!”
“Johnny, come to the hospital quickly! Our daughter… our daughter isn’t going to make it!” Caroline had no time for his anger, crying uncontrollably. “After you left, she cried and then suddenly fainted. The doctor says… says she won’t survive!”
Johnny clenched his fist, gritting his teeth.
“Even if she dies, it has nothing to do with me! You were the one who insisted on having her. Don’t try to guilt-trip me!”
“I’m not! I’m telling the truth, and she really is dying! Johnny, please come see her one last time, okay? I’m begging you. I’ll kneel before you if I have to!”
The veins on the back of his hand bulged, looking quite ferocious.
Johnny never dreamed he would ever find himself in such a miserable situation!
“I’m not coming.”
As the words left his mouth, the little girl’s face suddenly flashed through Johnny’s mind.
She was very thin, curled up in the corner of the bed, always sleeping, rarely opening her eyes.
Last night… he had sat by her bedside, watching over her the whole time.
