saving distraction.

Elena’s POV.
I watched as he continued blurting words of apology, but the whole time, I had a different thought running through my head.
All I could think of was the fastest way to get this over and done with. It wasn’t long before a perfect opportunity presented itself. He offered to go somewhere private. That was exactly what I needed.
However, a huge threat still posed before me. How do I get it done even in a private place? There was no way I could use the Wolf Bane’s blade on him while he was still conscious, Killian still remained the strongest Alpha wolf in existence, I needed to be extra smart.
Then it suddenly struck me, Helen’s active poison could do the job perfectly. I instantly muttered a word of thanks inwardly to Helen for being so thoughtful.
“Let’s discuss over a drink,” I blurted out, it took a whole amount of strength to get the words out of my throat.
The last thing I wanted was to kill Killian, despite the pain he caused me in the past. It wasn’t entirely his fault and I had totally forgiven him. But right now, my hands were tied. There was nothing I could do. My kids were involved and just like Helen said, I needed to fight for them.
“Come with me to the palace, it still longs for your presence,” he said.
Carrying out the mission would be a lot harder if I followed him to the palace. I needed to think of something fast.
“I’d rather we go to my old house, there will be less distraction, a lot of people are still surprised to see me,” I quickly pushed the situation to my advantage.
Surprisingly, he nodded frantically without further question. “That’s perfect by me, I’ll go get the finest wine from the palace and meet you.” He replied. “Do you need me to take you there? Maybe you do not know your way around anymore.” He offered.
I smiled inwardly, he was still the caring man that I knew him to be. Sadly, things have to take this route for us.
“I still know my way around Killian, meet me there,” I replied and walked off before he insisted.
I couldn’t hold back the tears that trickled down my cheeks as I walked through the lonely lane that led to my old house, I was also caught up in this messy situation but my heart bled for Killian the more. I wished there was a way to avert this misfortune from befalling him.
I never knew I could feel so much pity for a man who had wronged me in the past. But right now, seeing how terribly sorry he was, my heart had already melted as I watched his retracting step.
I was surprised by how warmly he welcomed me, before I got here, I was actually scared that he still despised me and might instruct his guards to lock me up for showing up again, but he behaved rather contrarily.
Never did I imagine that he would welcome me back with open arms. Everything was going rather smoothly. And more surprisingly, he still wanted me back. I could see the craving in his eyes.
I couldn’t seem to understand why he suddenly longed for me, was the truth revealed while I was gone?
I can’t deny the faint connection that I felt between us. The moment our skins collided, I felt some sort of push towards him.
I couldn’t help but wonder why there was still an attraction between us despite the mate bond being broken a long time ago.
This was the more reason why I needed to get this mission done and return to Greenwoods pack. It was where I belonged. Darius is the one I want to be with.
I exhaled a deep breath as I slowly pushed the door open, walking into the dusty living room. Everything was still neatly arranged as I had left it, except that they were covered by dust. I had thought that Killian would order the immediate demolition of my house right after I was banished but he really never did.
A low whimper escaped my lips as my gaze landed on the dress I had initially set aside to wear to the mating ceremony before the fake guards arrived with a new one.
In a flash, the events of that faithful night came rushing into my head. I could remember being so happy and looking forward to being announced as Alpha Killian’s mate.
My heart tightened in my chest as I remembered being so frightened as the guards continued leading me to an unknown destination until we stumbled upon the dead wolves.
A tear slipped out of my eyes as Killian’s cold face flashed through my head. The rigid look of disappointment and terror in his eyes as I tried to plead my innocence.
I fell to the dusty couch, sobbing bitterly as the flashbacks haunted my head.
Suddenly, I heard a soft knock on the door and I quickly hustled to my feet. I needed no one to tell me that he was here already and it was time to get my mission done.
I quickly wiped away the trickles of tears on my face, putting on a neutral look. Then I hurled my gown up, reaching for my short pocket, and fetched the wrapped substance that Helen had given to me. Quickly, I took a pinch with my fingernails, enough to take effect on him then returned it safely and arranged my gown.
I drew out a long breath, approaching the door, as my heart pounded hard within my chest. I was finally going to put an end to all of this.
“Hey… You know for a second I thought you were going to vanish before I got here.” He flashed me a charming smile immediately I pulled the door open. The smile that I had fallen for, years ago.
“Well, good thing I didn’t.”
I opened the door wide letting him in. He had a bottle of wine with two wine glasses in his hands.
I watched as he spread it out on the old wooden center table and poured the wine out into the glasses.
Just then, I secretly unpinned my hairband and purposely let it fall on the floor.
“Let me get that for you.” He bent over to pick it and I seized the opportunity to dip my fingernails into his wine glass, retracting immediately as he stood back up.
“I’ll do the honor,” he leaned forward and clipped it back to my hair. I couldn’t explain the surge of adrenaline that rushed through me as his hot breath fanned my cheeks. The sudden closeness weakened my bones.
I quickly took a step back from him.
“Elena, please promise me you are here to stay.” His gaze pierced into my eyes.
I ignored his outburst, reaching out to grab my wine glass and raised it to my lips, taking a sip. My action prompted him to do the same too.
I watched with my heart beating uncontrollably against my chest as he raised the glass to his lips.
Just then, a loud knock came on the door.
Oh fuck!
