Elena’s POV.
I exhaled a deep breath as I checked myself out in the mirror once more, I was fully ready to get this over and done with. My head snapped towards my packed bag and I sighed. At this point, I knew it wasn’t necessary, I was going to carry out the mission as fast as I could and flee from the pack. There was no point staying back and delaying the process, therefore endangering the lives of my kids.
I couldn’t believe I was on the verge of killing a man I was once in love with, and worse, he was the father of my kids. It was beginning to get to me now, how complicated the situation is.
And it has been like forever since I saw Killian last, I couldn’t help but wonder what he’d look like now. What would be his reaction when he sets his eyes on me? Was he still mad at me? Will he order his warriors to drag me out of the pack like he did years ago? Or will he open his arms wide for me to run into?
Different thoughts ran through my head.
What if I developed cold feet? What if I melt into his arms? What if I failed this mission? My innocent kids will be taking the fall for him, the thought alone made my heart tighten in my chest, and my determination to make the mission a success grew drastically, there was no way I was letting my kids suffer for something they know absolutely nothing about.
Under my gown, right below my upper thighs was a sharp knife strapped tightly in place, it was laced all over with wolves bane and secured in its rack. Of course, an opportunity might present itself for the usage. I was determined to make it faster and less painful for him.
Suddenly, a soft knock on the door snapped me out of my trance, and dragged my heavy feet to the door.
I pulled it open to the face of Helen. She had a nervous smile on her face.
“Come in please,” I ushered her in.”
“Elena, I’m really sorry about the kids, Alpha Darius told me what happened.”
“You were going to tell me about Alpha Killian on the day of your delivery, right?” She asked and I nodded slowly. “You trusted me that much huh?” She tried to make light of the situation.
It worked as a light chuckle bubbled out of my mouth.
“Listen, I’m not going to judge you for hiding your past the way you did, anyone with such ugly experience would want to hide it too,” she continued.
“I’m aware of the mission you are about to embark on, and I’m here to lend a little help,” she added.
I stared blankly at her without saying a word, what help could she possibly have to contribute to a mission as dangerous as this?
“Here, I brought you this,” she stretched out a tiny wrapped substance towards me. “It is a very active poison that can destroy any werewolf in a minute once taken, it might be easier for you to spike his drink with it and have your mission wrapped in a second.”
I quickly grabbed it from her, a wide smile spread out on my face. This would make my mission a lot easier and faster too. “Thank you for this, Helen, it means so much to me.”
She smiled and leaned forward, pulling me into a warm hug. “I can’t even imagine what you are going through right now, but listen, if you thread carefully, you’ll be done with this before you even know it,” she pulled away from the hug and stared into my eyes. “Killing someone requires a lot of courage, Elena, and it will be more difficult for someone like you who I assume hasn’t lifted a finger against someone else before, but anytime you develop cold feet, remember your children who are in the hands of an unknown man suffering a faith that isn’t theirs, fight for them, Elena.”
I nodded frantically, cleaning off the tears that were beginning to well up in my eyes. I was ready to do this.
There was a soft knock on the door shortly afterward, and I needed no soothsayer to tell me who was at the door.
“I’ll leave now, please, do take good care of yourself,” Helen pulled me yet again, into a warm hug.
“Thanks a whole bunch Helen, I’m so grateful,” I flashed her a grateful smile as I walked her to the door.
“Helen? You are here?” Darius furrowed his brows immediately I pulled the door open.
“Came to drop my piece, Alpha.” She bowed slightly and left.
Darius walked fully into the room and shut the door. “I see you are all set.”
I exhaled a deep breath, trying to wash away any trace of nervousness. “I guess I am.” I shrugged.
“Come here,” he leaned closer and wrapped his arms safely around me. “I know this is a lot on you right now, but everything will be fine in a short time.” He whispered in my ears, stroking my hair gently. I melted into his arms, letting myself wallow in the warmth and safety of his arms.
“Please Elena, come back to me, I don’t want to lose you and the kids,” he mumbled, his voice quivering as he spoke. I could tell he was struggling to hold back his tears.
“I promise,” I whispered, my grip around him tightened.
We remained that way for several seconds, afraid that if we let each other go, it might be the last time.
As hard as this mission might pose, I was determined to return home to Darius with the kids, to live together, happily as a big family. He was the only one who offered me that, and I wasn’t going to jeopardize it.
After what felt like forever, we finally pulled away from the hug, he leaned forward and crashed his lips on mine, suckling passionately on my lips as our tongues clashed against each other. It felt so much like a goodbye kiss.
We pulled away, after a short while, panting heavily. “I’ll have the warriors hang around the pack boundary, if you are ever in danger, head out immediately and they’ll bring you home safely,” he instructed and I nodded frantically.
