Damn!
Johnny barely held back from uttering the curse.
Mr. Wales was still present!
He could only cast a pleading look at Tilda…
She reached out and took the groceries from Johnny’s hands. Then she said to her father, “Dad, someone from Johnny’s company needs him for something. Let’s head upstairs first!”
“Oh, okay…” Mr. Wales wasn’t easily fooled, but since his daughter didn’t say anything, he followed her upstairs.
Johnny waited until they were out of sight before glaring at Caroline with gritted teeth.
“Are you crazy? I’ve been avoiding you. Isn’t that clear enough?”
He had never encountered such a persistent woman. This crazy woman even waited for him outside Tilda’s parents’ place!
“I had someone tell you, but you wouldn’t respond. I had no choice but to look into your… that woman,” Caroline said, unwilling to utter the word “fiancee”, her vision blurred with tears. “Johnny, you clearly said you wouldn’t get married! You lied to me.”
Frustrated, he ruffled his hair, retrieved a cigarette from his car, and lit it. “I met someone I want to marry. Do I need your permission?”
“When you broke up with me, it was because I wanted marriage and you didn’t. All this time, I’ve been convincing myself we split due to differences in beliefs-that you’re against marriage-and telling myself to let go and stop thinking about you. But now you want to marry that woman?”
Johnny couldn’t care less about her roundabout words. He focused on his cigarette and only responded casually once she finished speaking, “Yes, I’m going to marry her.”
“And what about me?”
“You’re merely my ex-girlfriend,” he replied. What else?
“Johnny! Are you blind? Am I not prettier than her? Don’t I have a better figure? Look at this shabby neighborhood where her parents are living. They don’t match your family’s status at all. She’s not worthy of marrying you!”
“Shut up.” Johnny’s initial irritation turned into disgust as he looked down at Caroline. “Tilda may have her flaws, but it’s not your place to comment on her. Besides, in my eyes, she’s better than you in every way.”
“I’m sparing our friendship because you’re my friend’s cousin. Don’t push your luck!” Johnny adjusted his black jacket and leaned against his car as he finished his cigarette and stubbed it out. “Leave now before my fiancee misunderstands! If you cause any trouble again, I won’t let you off!”
With that, he turned to leave, but Caroline quickly blocked his path.
“Then don’t let me off. I don’t want us to end.”
Johnny raised an eyebrow, his dark eyes cold. “Caroline, I’m not some gentleman with a moral code against hitting women.”
“Ha, then go ahead and strike me. It’s better than watching you marry someone else!”
“You-”
“Johnny, the last time we were together at the hotel, you didn’t use condoms.”
Johnny froze.
Caroline smirked slightly. “You were in such a rush that day. I reminded you, but you didn’t listen. So… a month later, I found out I was pregnant.”
“But that was two years ago!”
“Right, so-”
Before Caroline could finish her sentence, Johnny clenched his jaw as realization dawned on him.
“Damn! You gave birth?!”
