When Callie came out of the room, Joaquin had already finished half a pack of cigarettes.
Seeing her, he followed and asked, “How is it?”
“She is still building up the courage. It will take some time,” Callie said as she walked out. Karlee’s attitude had been ambiguous, even after hearing such significant news.
“Miss Marsh, forgive me for being blunt, but even if Holly did all this, what does it have to do with me? We used to be best friends. If she’s doing well, why would I betray her?” Karlee had said.
Callie turned her head in confusion, “It seems you indeed have no reason to help me.”
Karlee remained silent.
“But as far as I know, you are now married. Your husband had a car accident six months ago, leaving your family in debt. Your only child is still in kindergarten, and future living and education expenses will be difficult. Does Holly know about this?” Callie asked.
Karlee pressed her lips together. Holly had transformed into a wealthy heiress and was eager to sever ties with her past. How could she possibly know or help?
“Even so, I have no reason to betray her.”
“Five million dollars and an apartment in the city,” Callie quickly decided.
Karlee frowned, “I…”
“It’s worth it, isn’t it? This money is enough to pay off your debts and provide a good life for your family. Miss Karlee, even for the sake of your family and child, you shouldn’t refuse.”
“You… why are you…”
“I have my reasons for doing this.”
Callie remembered Karlee’s conflicted expression before she left and knew it was settled. Five million dollars was more than enough to buy her so-called friendship.
As she walked out of the motel, Callie opened the car door and received a phone call just before getting in. She answered silently.
“… Miss Marsh, I’ll help you.”
Callie smiled and signaled to Joaquin beside her, “Take her to Anbusea to collect evidence now.”
Joaquin nodded and turned back, while Callie put away her phone. As she looked up instinctively, she suddenly saw a familiar figure standing across the street, looking at her from afar.
Callie’s heart tightened.
She quickly typed on her phone: Leave through the back door.
Then she strode across the road towards the person.
Sienna was dressed simply today, carrying a plain canvas bag with a Buddhist logo, exuding an air of tranquility. She stood by the roadside, watching as Callie approached.
Inside the cafe.
“I didn’t expect to see you in… a place like this,” Callie said, stirring her coffee and pausing for a moment.
Sienna appeared much more composed in comparison. “What kind of place is this?”
Callie glanced at the street outside. “This is the most remote part of Ylosea. Most people here live almost rural lives with the worst education and healthcare. Look at the potholes on the road.”
Sienna looked out thoughtfully. “I came here to give away a dog.”
“A dog?” Callie was taken aback and then remembered something. “Pepper?”
“Yes, Maeve still can’t accept dogs. I didn’t want to force it.”
No wonder Sienna was in such a remote place.
Facing Sienna now always made Callie feel nervous. She bit her lip and tentatively said, “If you trust me, you can give the dog to me. I will take good care of it.”
Sienna took a sip of her coffee. “I heard that Nelson has been staying with you these past few days.”
Callie clenched her hand. So this was the real topic today.
