Chapter 173 – Lucy?

Book:The Rejected Ex-Wife Published:2025-3-17

Liam Fernando visited the hospital as soon as he touched down in South City.
Despite his busy schedule, he always made time to see June while he sought solutions to her vegetative state. Over time, he gathered some doctors who believed they could help June’s situation or at least increase her chances of revival.
Nothing was promised though as the success rates were as low as one percent. Nevertheless, Evelyn, Liam and Lucy were ready to try anything sane if it meant they could heighten June’s chances of recovery.
Liam was escorted by some men who stood outside June’s hospital ward while he went inside. June was plugged into the ventilator, still and beautiful as ever. Lucy stepped in a second later.
“You are here,” She looked around. “Where is Mother?”
They heard the toilet flush and got the answer to her questions.
“I brought in some doctors. They will be here any second.” Liam stated with a blank look.
Just then, the bathroom door clicked open and Evelyn walked out of the place with a sombre expression. Liam greeted and Lucy helped her to the seat. Everywhere suddenly went dark, and the machines beeped in alarm.
“What’s going on?!” Evelyn panicked as the floor electricity went off.
Liam rushed out of the hospital ward, “Get the doctor! Quick!” he ordered his men stationed outside.
“The entire floor is dark!” Lucy said with panic riddled eyes. “The reserve!” She yelled when she saw that machine was unplugged. The ventilator was loosing power.
Evelyn watched the ventilator beep loudly in alarm and eventually shut down. The entire thing went off, leaving them in darkness. She held June’s hand with her heart beating fast.
“June love…” Her voice was broken, “Please, hold on,” She turned to Lucy’s frozen form, “Do something! Get the lights back on!”
The entire hospital was a mess as they tried to work on the broken circuit which gave life to the third floor. Thankfully, Rafael was moved to a higher floor a few days ago, making him safe from the dire situation.
However, June and Sheila were on the same floor, and mere minutes after the lights went off, Sheila passed on, peacefully slipping into the world beyond with no one by her side.
The doctors rushed to June’s room and tried their best to keep her body alive while they brought in an alternate solution to get the ventilator working. All to no avail.
The lights soon returned and June was plugged into the ventilator. Her body was stiff and it was clear that life had left her body. The medical practitioners wore a sombre look but Evelyn refused to let them speak.
“No!” She shook her head, “Put it back! She’s still alive! My daughter is still in there!”
Lucy held her with glistening eyes, “Mother…”
“Leave me alone! No!” Mrs Evelyn’s body shook as she struggled out of Lucy’s hold, “She’s alive! She can’t be dead! No! My child isn’t-”
“Mother!” Lucy yelled in panic as Mrs Evelyn held her heart with laboured breaths. The doctors immediately attended to her.
“Calm down, Mother!” Lucy said as they rushed her to the next available room. “Please! Please, Mother! Don’t do this-” Lucy begged, holding on to Evelyn who struggled to breathe until she was finally sedated and placed on a ventilator.
Lucy felt like she was going insane staring at Mrs Evelyn who was now placed under life support. The doctor spoke to her. “Her heart is weak. She barely escaped a cardiac arrest. We needed to put her body to rest.”
Lucy nodded, wiping tears from her eyes, just then, her phone rang and it was her assistant. She didn’t pick up, devastated at the situation. The image of June lying on the bed stiff marred in her head.
She couldn’t believe it. She couldn’t believe her friend was gone. Lucy silenced her phone and stepped out of Evelyn’s ward, closing the door behind her.
The corridor was filled with Liam’s men who littered the area. She took a long breath, preparing herself for the worst and she proceeded towards June’s ward.
Her breath hitched and her eyes watered as she pushed the door open. Liam was inside with the doctors who wore sombre looks. She was gone. Dead. They didn’t need to say it.
It was written on their faces.
The harsh reality hit Lucy who immediately burst into tears, crying uncontrollably while Liam held her. His face didn’t crack. The atmosphere was tense as they held on to each other.
Unknown to them, somewhere between the doctors leaving the ward and Lucy’s heartfelt cries, the machine picked up and June started breathing on her own.
The duo held on to each other while they mourned their friend whose fingers moved slowly until her eyes fluttered open. June felt her eyes burn with the amount of light in the room.
“Zeus…” She tried to speak but nothing came out, it seemed like her voice was buried somewhere. The more she tried to speak, the painful it became.
After a minute of trial and error, she finally looked around her and saw the faint form of a man and a woman hugging. She narrowed her eyes, and tried to sit up, which proved to be a hard task as she ended up causing a ruckus and throwing down the drip stand beside her.
The metallic stand fell to the ground, startling Lucy while Liam was quick to pull out his gun, ready for any attack. June’s eyes blurred for a moment, as she tried to make out the people from the bright light that attacked her eyes.
Lucy’s jaws dropped open as she stared at June, eyes open and sitting up. “J-June?” Her lips quivered and the disbelief was clear in her eyes.
“Lucy?” June managed a small voice, tiny and easy to miss.
The sound of Lucy’s phone slipping from her hands and hitting the floor filled the air. “June..?” Lucy stepped out of Liam’s hold, refusing to blink for fear of the sight of June disappearing from her sight.
“You’re awake…” Her voice was soft and her tears were unstoppable.
“What happened?” June croaked.
