When Kendra appeared, Darnell wasn’t surprised. Instead, he grinned and said, “What are you talking about? I don’t understand.”
Kendra’s face darkened, and with a cold expression, she retorted, “You don’t understand what I’m saying? Fine, I’ll call the police right now.”
“Let them come and examine the clothes on the ground to see if they belong to the robber at the jewelry store, and check if the gun in your hand matches the bullets at the scene.”
“Don’t do that.”
Darnell quickly rushed over, grabbing Kendra’s hand with a sheepish smile. “I confess, I confess. Is that not enough?”
“Here’s what happened. After I knocked down the bull-masked robber in the vault, I changed into his clothes to try to subdue Mathias and his crew. But unexpectedly, the old man in grey really thought I was a robber.”
Kendra pulled her hand away forcefully. “You were carrying a backpack and wearing a bull mask. How could he not think you were a robber?”
Darnell looked frustrated. “I wasn’t really robbing. I wanted to be a hero, but it all went wrong.”
“I was very angry and upset. And when the grey-clothed old man ordered people to attack me, I got into a fight with them in my rage and ended up rescuing Mathias too.”
“They ruined my plans, so I wanted to ruin theirs.”
He explained to Kendra, “And another reason-I wanted to extract some benefits from the robbers since they were notorious criminals.”
“If they were grateful to me, they’d give me millions. Besides, don’t you think that compared to Mathias and his crew, that old man seemed more like a bandit?”
“Endangering hostages and injuring the saleswomen is truly despicable.”
He gazed at the attractive woman before him. “I’m sure you were equally angry at that time and wanted to teach the grey-clothed old man a lesson.”
Kendra didn’t respond directly but spoke softly, “Any other reasons?”
“There are.”
Realizing he couldn’t fool this woman easily, Darnell revealed his true intentions. “Mathias mentioned they were betrayed by Steve, which led them into danger.”
“The grey-clothed old man’s disregard for the hostage’s safety likely has something to do with Steve. They aimed to kill them all and leave no witnesses.”
“I have a grudge against Steve. He’s tried to kill me more than once. If he’s going after Mathias and his crew, how could I not interfere?”
“If Steve kills Mathias, I might be next. To live a few more days, naturally, I’d help Mathias.”
Darnell shrugged. “I’ve said everything there is to say. If you think I’m wrong, go ahead and arrest me.
He slyly added, “But let me remind you-Mathias is already gone. In the eyes of the robbers, I’m their enemy now, so the police can’t do anything about me.”
“Do you still think you did nothing wrong?”
Kendra rolled her eyes at Darnell in exasperation, suppressing the urge to kick him. “Rescuing robbers and injuring officers is undoubtedly a serious crime.”
“But don’t worry. I won’t turn you in. Although you’re annoying and broke the law, your actions are somewhat understandable.”
She coughed lightly. “Steve has been making a lot of moves lately. Not only has he been resolving the Swain family’s troubles, but he’s also been paving the way for Zane’s release.”
“Maybe in half a month, Zane will regain his freedom. Mathias falling out with Steve is beneficial for our case.”
Realizing she had said too much, she shifted her tone. “Alright then, let’s keep this matter secret. I’ll do my best to cover for you.”
“I’ll also find ways to erase your traces at the jewelry store. But you’ll need to have a word with Judith. I saw her leading people inside as I left.”
“She was even calling your name.”
Kendra’s smile turned playful. “It seems she not only knows you’re at the jewelry store but also knows you quite well.”
Darnell felt a headache coming on. “That woman… Alright, I’ll talk to her.”
“And try not to show yourself too much lately.”
Kendra suddenly remembered something important, and her expression grew serious. “Especially avoid appearing in front of Omar Ridsdale-the grey-clothed old man-lest he recognizes you.”
“Fortunately, his leg is broken. Otherwise, I’d tell you to leave Whiteville for safety. He’s very cunning and formidable.”
Darnell nodded. “I admit it-the old man is definitely no easy character. By the way, what’s his name again?”
“Omar Ridsdale,”
Kendra hesitated briefly before speaking, “He used to be a grave robber, but later, he pledged allegiance to the Peel family as their servant. He’s a cunning person with formidable skills.”
“He only serves the patriarch of the Peel family and Edward-Finn’s older brother. Finn is the man whose shoulder you dislocated at the golf course last time.”
“So complicated.” Darnell rubbed his head. He hadn’t expected to cross another tough opponent.
After sorting through relationships, he said, “Omar is so impressive-for someone like him to pledge loyalty must mean Edward is extraordinary too. Isn’t Edward much stronger than Finn?”
“The Peel brothers are worlds apart,” Kendra spoke softly.
“There was a world of difference between Finn and Edward, both in terms of courage and physical ability.”
“Even Elvis Needham would show respect when meeting Edward because he’s crazy and smart. Omar Ridsdale coming here means Edward must be in Whiteville too.”
“Even if he doesn’t avenge his brother-it’s possible he’ll help Omar regain face. Either way, you should be careful.”
Darnell roughly grasped Edward’s information. Then with a playful smile, he asked, “Kendra, you and Finn are good friends. In other words, your family and the Peel family should be old family friends.”
“Aren’t you worried about upsetting the Peel family by helping me today? Why did you help me?”
He added with a hint of shyness, “Have you fallen for me?”
Kendra froze momentarily, then became furious. “You ungrateful fool.”
She kicked at Darnell several times, annoyed that he had put her in such an awkward position.
She raised her fair leg and aimed a kick at Darnell.
Darnell dodged swiftly. When he could no longer avoid her attacks, he suddenly rushed forward, dropped to one knee, and grabbed both of her slender legs.
He firmly pressed his chin against her knees to prevent her from delivering a knee strike. “Kendra, stop hitting me. I was wrong…”
When Darnell grabbed her legs, Kendra immediately stopped all movement. To Kendra, his hands felt powerful, solid, and warm.
The moment he gripped her, Kendra’s heart began to pound violently. Her entire body heated up.
Starting from her cheeks, this burning sensation spread throughout her body.
A few seconds later, Kendra turned her head, her face crimson, bashful. She whispered, “Let… let go of me…”
Darnell didn’t respond, staring intently without moving. The angle was too provocative.
Seeing this made Kendra’s pretty face change, and her voice turned cold as she spoke up, “What are you looking at?”
Darnell mumbled, “The designs of undergarments nowadays are too tempting. It’s like wearing nothing at all…”
Then, remembering the thong he had pulled from her handbag that morning, his whole body shuddered.
The next second, he scrambled away as fast as he could.
