Chapter 13
Attack
***
Being shocked was an understatement.
Leila remained in her living room, plopped down on the cold floor. The fast beating of her heart was like drumming near her ears the only thing to which she could listen amidst the silence of the night.
She was thinking of what to do next.
Or it was rather she couldn’t think of anything to do next, which was the exact thing that would surely define her thoughts.
“Is it true? Or am I just dreaming? Hallucinating?” She murmured before she slightly slapped her face with her hands.
It stung a bit as she bit her lower lip firmly.
‘It’s true…’
Her thoughts lingered as she felt like a candle slowly being melted by fire. She slowly laid her back on the floor ignoring the coldness of it.
She tried to pinch herself as if she wanted to convince herself that she might be wrong or was hoping to be wrong.
How could it possibly be… right?
But it hurt telling her that everything she saw wasn’t just a pigment of her imagination.
“What the heck will I do now? Oh God! What did I put myself into?” She whispered under her breath.
She heaved a deep sigh as she closed her eyes. Her mind might have been so exhausted that she had fallen asleep.
A few moments later, her forehead furrowed as she groaned in frustration at the sudden, long, and loud howls by whatever. She had never experienced that kind of thing, and she instantly sat down on the cold floor still half asleep.
However, her senses were fully awakened by the loud howling and eerie sound from outside as it repeatedly growled making the hair at her nape stand up. She swallowed hard.
This time, Leila became more alert as she found herself holding her baseball bat, which she found near her door. She slowly walked towards her window as quietly as possible.
She took a peek outside by the window slightly sneaking from her curtain only to be shocked because she saw a pack of wolves with creepy red eyes around her house!
‘Holy mother of cats and dogs! I mean wolves and dogs! Urghhh! What the hell?!’ She mentally thought as panic instantly crept into her system.
‘Oh my gosh! Oh my gosh!’ She thought like it was a mantra that could make the wolves go away inside her head.
Her mind was clouded by too many thoughts one after the other.
Did Hunter know that she already knew his real identity?
Were all of these his associates?
What are these, anyway?
Were they here to… kill her?
Was it because she discovered his identity?!
She took a deep breath as she covered her mouth with her other hand to stop any sound that might escape her mouth.
Those thoughts sent a shiver down her spine.
Leila swallowed hard as her legs wobbled in fear.
However, before she could even think of what to do, a loud crash from the back of her house pulled her back to reality. She instantly flinched when a loud growl followed it was loud and eerie. Her lips quivered in fear as her heart began to pound so fast that she thought it might want to leave her behind.
Her hands trembled so much that she almost couldn’t hold the bat like her hands lost their ability to grip and had no strength to hold it because of fear. Her eyes moistened as fear attacked her senses.
“W-Who… the heck is t-that?” She lowly asked herself using her gruff voice.
Then, a loud bang from the broken door resonated in her ears. It was too fast that a huge pitch-black wolf appeared in front of her very eyes before she could even think twice.
Leila wanted to faint as she stared from its bloody red eyes.
Yes.
A huge wolf appeared in front of her. His bloody red eyes were like telling her that she had no place to go anymore. A lone tear escaped from her eyes as she slowly hoped for an escape although she was already failing miserably.
If she opened the door, its comrades would certainly attack her. And she would never surpass this huge wolf, no matter what.
Will her life end right here? Right now?
Really?
Her life would end her? At her safe haven? At her grandparents’ house?
What a terrible thing to happen?
Leila bit her quivering lower lip as she held the baseball ball despite her trembling hands.
‘Will I be joining Dad soon?’ She mentally thought negative thoughts were already all over her mind.
Leila couldn’t help but pray to every saint and God… she was hoping for a miracle right now, for she could see that these creatures wouldn’t let her go.
‘Mom, Darcel… I’m sorry but-‘
Before she could even finish her thoughts, the huge wolf growled as it revealed its sharp and bared canines. Leila flinched as she held her bat in front of her.
The huge wolf slowly walked towards her like it was taking its time to attack its prey.
‘Oh, God…’ She mentally thought.
“S-Stay t-there!”
She swallowed hard as it just snarled at her as if mocking her. She mentally groaned in frustration.
“I… I will s-smack y-you!” She tried to say as if it understood her.
Leila tried to lift up her baseball bat even with her hands trembling.
But who was she kidding?
Her bat wouldn’t protect her from this ruthless creature. And she had no strength to fight it not with the other friends it had outside.
However, she wouldn’t allow herself to be eaten without a goddamn fight. She would fight for her last breath. She wouldn’t allow herself to be eaten by these horrible creatures! No freaking way!
The huge wolf let out another loud growl as it looked outside it made her flinch so much that she almost dropped her bat.
Then, it suddenly looked up his black snout facing her ceiling as if it were sniffing something in the air. And it suddenly let out a loud howl.
Leila shrieked, and before she knew it, the wolf instantly went back to her backdoor to where it came from.
That was the only time she realized that she had been holding her breath for too long already.
Her baseball bat fell creating a loud noise as it reached the floor. Her entire body was trembling in fear.
She was about to fall, too, when she heard something strange outside.
Leila immediately went towards the window and took a peek. Her eyes widened as her hands flew in front of her agape mouth.
There, she saw the pitch-black wolf growling at a familiar, huge, dark brown furred wolf.
It growled loudly showing its bared canines. The pitch-black wolf whimpered, but it attacked Hunter!
Yes.
The familiar, huge, dark brown furred wolf must be Hunter. She couldn’t believe it!
She flinched as she saw Hunter being thrown away.
“Oh, God!” Leila spoke lowly.
She remembered Hunter who was still wounded and her eyes widened when she saw blood flowing from one of his feet.
Without thinking, Leila grabbed her baseball bat and ran towards her door.
She must help him!
Leila screamed trying to scare the pitch-black wolf, whatever it was. But it just snarled at her.
This time, its attention was all over her.
“You’re one h-heck of a d-dog! I’m g-gonna… I am r-really g-gonna s-smack you!” She said with a shuddering voice.
However, her insides churned as its eyes turned bloody red and it salivated like it was too excited to eat her!
‘Oh, freaking great!’ She mentally thought.
Leila knew that it was going to attack her.
She knew that it would kill her.
She knew that Hunter might be too injured to even save her the second time.
She closed her eyes.
At least, she had the courage to save him this time. This was the least of the things that she could do as for being grateful that he saved her from Donovan.
She didn’t even have the chance to thank him.
Leila braced herself as she tried to wield her baseball bat towards the raging wolf.
But before it could even reach her, Hunter in his wolf form attacked its enemy like a madman.
It burrowed its claws into its neck as it dug its canines deeply into it.
Leila covered her eyes as she couldn’t watch what Hunter was doing. But then, she returned her gaze when she realized that the pitch-black wolf was still alive and snarled at Hunter.
It whimpered as it ran to the woods Hunter was about to follow it when he suddenly fell down.
Leila swallowed hard as she slowly walked towards the poor wolf. It was breathing heavily.
She was worried, but she didn’t know what to do.
“What should I do? Oh, God!” She uttered it under her breath.
Before she could even touch him, a loud voice confirmed all of her doubts.
“Master!”
Finally, Butler Henry went towards them. Worry was evident in his eyes.
Now, it was all confirmed.
She wasn’t dreaming at all.
This was Hunter all along.
And he saved him again… for the second time.
