** * * * * Crystal’s POV * * * * *
I rubbed my eyes and pinched myself several times to confirm that this was not really happening, that I was probably dreaming.
How could this be the woman that has raised me since I was eight?
She was always caring, nice and selfless, she was never greedy or desperate for power like this.
Now she acts like she has been possessed by an evil demon or someone has cast a spell on her, but what if I was wrong all those years?
What if my idea of her was not the actual truth? Perhaps I never really knew her, maybe this is the real her but she has only been pretending all these years.
I used to look up to this woman as a mentor, she taught me to value the little I have but today she wants me to hurt someone else just for the sake of power.
Someone cannot become this evil in just one day which can only mean that this is how she has always been, this is her true nature, how come I never saw it?
“Because it’s not right Mum, I can’t do it,” I replied
Although I hate Logan, I can’t make him suffer like that, especially for such selfish reasons.
“Listen Crystal, in this world we live there is no right or wrong, the only rule is to do what is necessary and beneficial for you, anything that would make you superior to your enemies,” she advised
Where does all this keep coming from?
Just when I thought I can’t be any more shocked, she surprises me with yet another shocker.
Is she really the one saying this?
“Mum-two, I remember you had told me before that we shouldn’t do things that would hurt others just for our own personal gain, it’s called selfishness and I refuse to believe that you are selfish. Please tell me this is all a joke mum,”
“Yes I used to think like that before, but then I realized that I was wrong, very very wrong Crystal. You see the world is no longer what it used to be, in this present day there is no room for Justice or mercy, this race is a survival of the fittest and to win you would have to be at the top of your game,” she replied
“Think about the benefits of it Crystal, if our wolf clan is enhanced and the new Dawn Pack is weakened, you wouldn’t have to be scared of Logan killing your child.
You once told me that you will do anything for him even if it meant sacrificing your life, so why are you refusing to do this now? Won’t you do this for Aidan?” She queried.
So now she’s bringing Aidan into this? I’ve never seen her this desperate before.
Wait… Now it’s all coming together, it’s all starting to make sense.
It’s not today that she started to plot this, ever since the day I had told her that Alpha Logan Stewart was Aidan’s father, that was the day her behavior started to change. She had always told me to get back together with Logan but I made it clear to her that I was not interested in that.
Then the strange attacks… I think it must have been her. First, when I had told them I was no longer in contact with Logan, their attitude changed to the extent that they had mocked me when I went to borrow some money from them, then suddenly they came back and apologized.
I always thought their behavior that day was strange, I couldn’t put a pin on it but now I do.
They had only come back to apologize because they had cut an Alpha’s scent on me, I remember I had been with Logan the previous night.
Then next, they offered to take Aidan with them and that night after work, I was attacked.
It was the night that Michael had showed up and saved me but before that incident I had called my stepmom and informed her that I would be coming back with foot as I could not find a cab.
Her behavior that day was strange, she wanted to know which route I will be following so that she can arrange for the attack but luckily for me Michael was there to rescue me.
To confirm my suspicions, later that evening when we had dinner, I remember that I had mentioned the attack but none of them looked surprised or concerned.
How could I not put all this together earlier?
There have been so many incidents relating to Logan and I in the past but most importantly today, I was attacked again by an unknown man in a car.
If Logan was not there to save me, I would have been dead by now and when I came back here I remember the shock on her face when she saw me, she probably thought I was dead already
Is this all part of her plan to get Logan to awaken the wolf clan’s sword?
But how is getting rid of me supposed to help her achieve that?
Maybe she thinks that she could use Aidan in my absence to blackmail Logan into doing it, only if she knows that Logan would have killed Aidan if he found out about him.
Was she really that desperate for power?
“Why are you quiet Crystal? Tell me that you are going to do it already,” she urged.
The look in her eyes was dark, it was that of a woman who would go to any length in order to get what she wants.
“Mum, I have a question for you which I hope you would answer honestly,” I said.
She did not say anything or react to my words in any way, she just stood there staring at me with a blank expression.
“Mum, what I want to know is… Are you the one who has been behind my recent attacks? Especially the one that has happened today, the car that tried to kill me, did you pay him to do that?” I queried
She was silent, her face still holding that blank expression that made it difficult for me to know what she was thinking.
I was praying in my mind for her to say ‘No’. It would hurt me to find out that the woman I trusted, loved and believed more than my own mum was the same person who has plans to end my life.
