His dark eyes were sharp like blades. “You’ve done this kind of thing more than once.”
Callie was at a loss for words. What she did at Charlotte’s art exhibition was indeed surprising.
“I’m not that bored. You can marry whoever you want, what does it have to do with me?” Her voice was small, carrying a lot of dissatisfaction.
Nelson felt a strange blockage in his heart. In the past, she would have made a big fuss, but now it seemed she didn’t care as much.
“Then stay here.”
Callie frowned. “Will you let me go once the fifteenth is over? I can go anywhere I want?”
A trace of panic flashed in Nelson’s eyes but quickly disappeared. “Yes.”
“Even abroad?”
“Don’t you dare,” he blurted out.
Callie laughed and walked forward again, kneeling on one knee on the sofa and leaning close to him. “Why so anxious?”
Nelson turned his head to avoid her.
“Actually, you can’t bear to let me go, can you?” Callie teased, cupping his face with her hand. “But you’re getting married. Do you expect me to be your mistress, Mr. Oconnor? I won’t do that.”
For some reason, Callie felt that although Nelson appeared heartless, he still had a soft spot for her.
Otherwise, he wouldn’t have risked his life to save her last night.
“Grandpa gave you assets, didn’t he?” he suddenly asked.
Callie nodded.
“With those resources in your hands, I can’t let you go abroad.”
It was an explanation, but a heartless one. The little bit of hope in Callie’s heart disappeared, leaving her feeling empty. Her eyes stung with unshed tears. “So it was just my wishful thinking.”
Her sudden look of despair made Nelson’s heart sink. He frowned deeply and instinctively reached out, but Callie had already turned away. He only managed to catch a strand of her hair.
“Staying here is fine. As an ex-wife, it’s only right to help my ex-husband,” Callie said with a bright smile. “But I have one condition.”
Nelson was silent in the face of her smile. “What condition?”
“I still need to draw. Have Kieran bring my computer from my place.”
It was a simple condition, not difficult at all.
Nelson squinted his eyes. “There are computers at Paucaster Villa.”
“It’s not the same. I only use my own.”
Nelson signaled for Kieran to come in. Callie emphasized, “The black one. I just bought it. Be careful when you bring it over; don’t break it.”
Kieran immediately agreed. “No problem.”
After everything was arranged, Callie sat in a corner, lost in thought. Nelson couldn’t stand seeing her so despondent and walked past her from behind. “Mollie is in the hospital. You can visit her tomorrow.”
Callie raised an eyebrow, realizing this and ignoring the softness in Nelson’s tone.
When she looked up again, he had already gone upstairs to rest in the guest room.
The next day, Kieran personally drove Callie to the hospital. The smell of disinfectant was strong as Kieran followed closely behind her.
Mollie was in a VIP ward. When Callie arrived, there was someone inside.
A man sat by the bed, his back familiar.
He was peeling an apple slowly and said, “Mollie, I haven’t treated you badly.”
Callie stood still, not rushing to push the door open.
Mollie replied, “Not bad at all. Few women in the club have good outcomes. You gave me status and identity; it’s more than enough.”
He nodded and put a piece of apple in his mouth, swallowing before saying, “Then why did you betray me?”
