Nelson remained bent over, his expression calm. “Mr. Ellison, you suspect I deliberately planned this.”
“Jaquan set a bomb in the car, you almost lost your life. It doesn’t seem intentional.”
“But Nelson, your motive is too obvious. You acted too hastily!” Ahmad didn’t let go of his hand. “I think the cooperation between Oconnor Group and the Ellison family can be slowed down. When you learn to be patient, we can discuss it again.”
Charlotte had been waiting outside, not hearing any sound for a long time. She knocked anxiously, “Father! Don’t make things difficult for Nelson!”
Nelson’s brow relaxed, not bothered. “What did the police say?”
“You just came from the police station,” Ahmad stared at him, “with that woman.”
Nelson remained composed. “You suspect I confronted Jaquan because of Callie.”
“If not for that woman, why would you go? Lucia is just a cover.”
Nelson forcefully pulled his hand away, causing his wound to bleed, staining the bandage red. He didn’t care and stood up straight.
“You misunderstood. I did tamper with the goods leaving the country, but I didn’t instruct Jaquan to kidnap. If he hadn’t done this, he might have been fine. He has only himself to blame.”
Ahmad stared at his calm demeanor, feeling somewhat powerless.
Nelson’s scheming was too deep, as if everything was under control. It was hard to tell if many things were intentional or accidental.
“He caused such trouble for the Ellison family. Even if he stayed, he would only cause more problems. Don’t you agree?”
Nelson moved behind Ahmad and massaged his shoulders. “Scott Group is being investigated, Cyrus is missing. This saves you the trouble of filling the gap, killing two birds with one stone.”
Ahmad was still angry. “Marilyn…”
Nelson interrupted him. “Marilyn is not your biological child. As long as she quits drugs, it won’t affect the Ellison family much.”
He said this as if discussing the weather, with no emotional fluctuation.
Ahmad slowly turned his head. “You knew.”
Nelson smiled. “What you know, I know.”
After a long silence, Charlotte continued knocking on the door. “Nelson… Father…”
Ahmad’s tense expression softened instantly. He sighed and wiped the blood off his cane with a tissue.
“Maeve is a good girl, not as cunning as Marilyn or that woman. Think carefully. Don’t cause trouble after getting married.”
Nelson remained unmoved, his mind filled with Callie’s pale face. She had told him at the brink of death that they should die together.
So resolute.
“Yes, I understand.”
Ahmad felt slightly relieved hearing this. He looked towards the door. “Go comfort Maeve. She was terrified when she found out you were at the scene last night.”
However, as Nelson reached the door, Ahmad suddenly called out to him. “Nelson.”
Nelson stopped and waited for his next words.
“I’ve seen your potential since you were young. After all these years, I didn’t expect you to actually win.” Ahmad’s gaze was long and meaningful. “Since you’ve won, don’t disappoint me.”
These words were a form of recognition.
Nelson turned the doorknob and stepped out. Charlotte saw him and rushed into his arms. “Are you okay? Did Father make things difficult for you?”
The woman was petite and still wore a white dress. Nelson used to find her stunning, but after seeing Callie in one, Charlotte seemed plain in comparison.
In his mind, only the image of that woman remained, standing at the end of the rain-soaked path, vivid yet desolate.
