After Rosalind said this, she closed her eyes, and her body trembled slightly, as if preparing for the imminent pain.
But after waiting for a long time, the pain did not come.
Instead, Ulric propped himself up and withdrew.
“I don’t want you to compensate me in this way,” he said before turning and heading to the bathroom.
Rosalind lay on the bed, her hair spread out like seaweed.
With his weight no longer pressing down on her, air rushed back into her lungs, and a bitter smile appeared on her lips.
Was it compensation?
It really wasn’t.
She just wanted to feel Ulric, truly and tangibly.
Even though it was painful…
The sound of water started again in the bathroom, pattering softly.
Rosalind sat up from the bed and waited for him without turning on the light.
When Ulric came out wrapped in a towel, she immediately embraced him.
“Just this once, don’t ask, okay?”
“About your mother?”
Rosalind nodded.
“Alright, I won’t ask.”
He was always the one to give in and had gotten used to it.
Ulric touched her hair. “Were you scared today?”
“Yes, I thought something had happened to you.”
Ulric had never lost contact with her voluntarily. She worried if his wound had festered or if he was in a hospital or had been in a car accident…
At that moment, countless possibilities flashed through Rosalind’s mind, but she never thought he had gone to the cemetery.
“I’m tough. Nothing will happen to me.”
“But if you don’t take care of yourself, who knows?”
Ulric smiled and pulled her onto his lap.
“If I die, Malcolm would be happy.”
“Why bring him up again?”
“Malcolm mentioned your mother in front of me just to show off that he could go while I couldn’t.”
Ulric was too smart not to understand that.
Rosalind was stunned and quickly explained, “I didn’t tell Malcolm I was going to the cemetery today. We ran into each other there by chance and decided to leave together.”
“As far as I know, he has no relatives buried in that cemetery.”
That was true.
“And I heard a staff member say he was visiting his mother-in-law.”
Rosalind was surprised. “You must have heard wrong.”
“I didn’t.”
“Malcolm wouldn’t do that. Look, we brought the children back. Even though he was reluctant, he didn’t stop us! I’ve talked with him many times privately. He agreed to move on and find a girlfriend. Can’t you stop being hostile towards him?”
“I’ll believe it when he actually finds a girlfriend.”
Ulric didn’t believe Malcolm would really find one.
Rosalind sighed lightly. “I don’t know about anything else and don’t want to say much more because it makes me look like I’m speaking up for Malcolm, and you’ll get jealous. Malcolm and I can only be friends. There’s absolutely no other possibility.”
In the darkness, Ulric could still accurately capture Rosalind’s eyes.
They stared at each other for a long time until he finally sighed deeply.
“I can never win against you.”
It seemed like he was always the one being submissive.
“How could that be? You’re a domineering president.”
“With you around, how can I be domineering?”
If it weren’t for Rosalind’s sake, Malcolm would have been driven out of the country long ago and never allowed back! He could give Malcolm money, a house, and a car-but he must stay away from Rosalind!
