Did I lie about Elisa taking his money, certainly. I did.
Did my plan work?
I stretched out my hand to take the divorce papers and Marcellino’s signature was in each and every page.
It did.
“You made the right choice, brother” I told Marcellino and he picked up his board, erased the former and wrote something down. He showed it to me.
“Get me out of here”
“I’m sorry Marcellino but for my plans to work you have to stay here”
He shook his head angrily and scribbled something.
“I need to get Elisa, I need to make sure she pays for this. My ears of hardwork”
What hardwork, I started his company.
“She will pay, Marcellino. I assure you of this and I will make it happen, don’t you trust me?”
He studied me for a moment and he started writing something.
“How much did she take?”
“Let’s say too much for you to handle ”
He closed his eyes and used the board again.
“Am I broke now?”
Should I torture him, tell him that he’s worth little, make him pay for his own deeds?
But Marcellino never really did anything solid, he was hateful and a prick but he was always talk and no action.
“No, you’re not”
He nodded and dropped the board, finally. I stood up and gave him a small nod. From where I stood, I could see through the window. I watched Alexander drive towards the house.
“Do you know why mum never left dad, even she knew he was cheating?” I asked Marcellino.
He stared at me for a while, as if he knew something I did not and he was contemplating telling me.
“Who would she have left him for, your broke dad?” He wrote down.
“Did you ever see my dad?” I asked Marcellino.
He stared at me again with that same look and he picked up his board.
“Of course I saw him, I even met him, I was twelve when you were born and I was in the hospital when he came in… My dad didn’t come, he knew she was having an affair and he knew you weren’t his”
The board ran out of space and he had to wipe out everything he wrote and start all over.
“Your father cut the cord. If you’re wondering why our mother didn’t leave our father it’s because he was exactly the kind of man she wanted. Rich, famous and powerful and she couldn’t bring herself to even go with the love of her live”
I scoffed.
“If she really did love my father, she would have gone with him, I can’t imagine leaving Jenna for anyone else, love would do that to you. Cripple you and leave you senseless ”
“She was naive then and as she grew older, she became wiser but too ashamed to admit that she was stupid so she decided to continue living as though nothing happened ”
I looked out the window again, the car was gone, probably parked in the garage. I walked out of the room without another word and I headed straight to the bedroom. Jenna was flipping through a novel.
She peeked up from the book at me and she looked back down and continued reading.
“I got Marcellino to sign the papers” I told her.
She didn’t look up at me.
She was still giving me the silent treatment.
I walked to my luggage and put the envelope with the other files.
“Are you hungry?” I asked her.
She flipped through a page and kept on reading I climbed the bed and grabbed the book from her hands.
“Talk to me”
She opened her palms without saying anything or looking at me.
“Please, talk to me. I’m sorry for not going after Kylee but I’m going to send someone now”
She stretched her hand out again asking for the novel.
“If you don’t say anything I’m not giving this back ”
She looked at me and raised a brow.
“I’m serious, say something, anything ”
She stretched her hand out again, asking for the book.
“No, I’m not giving you the book until you say something to me”
She nodded her head and started climbing off her bed. I didn’t want to grab her hand because she might try to pull it away and it would hurt her, so instead I followed after her.
“I’m sorry ” I told her.
She reached the door and I stood in front of it blocking the exit.
“Baby, I said I’m sorry ”
“Get out”
Her voice was laced with anger I had never witnessed from her before. She was glaring at me if she could pounce on me.
“Here, take back the book but we should talk this out”
“You’re so selfish”
“I can’t believe you’re saying this right now. You should know me better”
“I should know you better? You didn’t even have a reaction when you heard that Kylee was gone, you were just cool about it”
“She made a conscious decision to leave”
“She’s your friend. She’s supposed to be your family, she can’t just leave and you be cool with it what you cared about was some stupid divorce papers”
“You know how much I’ve wanted this for us”
“It would wait ”
“I saw an open window and it took it. What if later Marcellino didn’t sign it, what if I waited a week before asking him and he would choose not to just to spite us”
“Kaylee is an important person in your life. She’s an important person in your company and when you heard about her resignation, you didn’t even mention it”
“You’re more important ”
“What if one day I’m less important than something else and if I leave you’re going to be emotionless about it, you’re just going to move on with your fucking day like nothing has happened ”
“That is never going to happen ”
“That’s what happened to Kylee. Josef was right, I feel am nothing but a pawn in your entire chessboard. When you want something, you just reach out, make the right decisions and boom it’s sitting on your laps, just as I am. You wanted the divorce papers signed you got it, you wanted me and for three years you did not make a single move and when you did, the next day I was yours.
That alone should have told me something but no, I was too innocent to see”
