Jay’s POV:
I was biting my nails, moving back and forth like a crazy maniac.
My shirt was slightly bloody, and I couldn’t stay calm no matter what.
When Martinez walked out of the ICU, I rushed to his side.
“Tell me now,” I demanded.
He rolled his eyes, then put his hand on my chest, pushing me back a little.
“Brother, for a doctor, you act way too scary,” he said as I angrily grabbed his coat.
“Tell me, damn it,” I yelled at the top of my voice.
“I’m sorry,” he whispered sadly, and tears instantly blinded my eyes.
“I’m not a failure as a surgeon. That’s why my private hospital is one of the best hospitals in the world. By now, you should know that,” he said as I looked at him in shock and disbelief.
“Does that mean… Does that?” I asked in a cracked voice.
“Yes, both the mother and the child are alive. You did well to rush them here on time. If you had let them be like that for hours, they both would have been dead by now,” he answered as I fell weakly to my knees, sobbing.
“Brother!” He exclaimed and quickly knelt beside me, pressing his hand on my shoulder.
“Brother, what’s wrong? Are you hurt anywhere?” He asked in concern as I shook my head.
“Is it because of her that you are crying this much? I have never seen you cry in years. Didn’t you say that she was just a stranger when you called me to send you my driver?” He asked.
I looked at him with blurred vision, then laughed loudly as tears continued to fall.
He couldn’t understand how I was feeling at the moment, and neither could I.
The fear that washed over me when he said he was sorry was intense. I couldn’t believe that she was dead, and I felt like my heart was ripping apart. It was like a part of me had died.
When he said that she was alive, as well as the child, the relief that I felt was beyond my understanding. I couldn’t contain what I was feeling.
“Brother, people are watching us,” he whispered, then stood upright.
“Get up,” he said in a low tone as I slowly did.
“Be at ease, everyone. My brother is just being dramatic,” he announced, then smiled at me.
I smiled back, and without warning, I pulled him into a hug.
Ever since I chose to get married, my relationship with him wavered. He was upset in the past that I had to force him to look after Olivia while some other people were bullying her, yet there was never a day he disrespected me.
When my father asked me to get married to a chosen partner and manage a few of his hospitals, I refused. Despite being a qualified doctor, I wasn’t going to be with a woman chosen by him. My heart was set on Olivia and her alone. If I wasn’t going to have her, then I was going to have the only person that meant everything to her, and that was her sister.
I married her sister and cut ties with my own family before they could disown me. My little brother took over in my place and became one of the most world-renowned surgeons. Although we talked, it wasn’t as we did back in the past.
We both avoided each other by saying we were busy.
I worked and switched careers. Although most people recognized who my family was, I never let that get to me and worked hard as any usual salesman would. Through my hard work, I earned well and soon got promoted to manager. I thought my life was complete when my wife died and I convinced Olivia to be with me, but now I see how wrong I was.
Even when I was kidnapped and the thought of her being with the man who had hit me crossed my mind, I wasn’t that terrified. But when Debby was in my arms, trying her best to stay awake, I felt so freaking scared, and I cried hard when she closed her eyes and stopped responding.
I knew in my heart that I wasn’t going to let her be away from me, even if she would hate me now for doing that to her.
“Brother, she must mean so much to you,” he said when he pulled back and looked at me with a pained expression on his face.
“More than my life,” I whispered bitterly.
“Then you didn’t have to lie about her being a stranger,” he said as I wiped off my tears.
“I’m sorry I did that, I just felt confused. When I saw her looking lifeless, I prayed for the first time in my life and wished there was a way I could give her my own life,” I responded honestly.
He patted my shoulder, then looked at me from head to toe.
“I know you were in a rush, but are you okay? Your hair is a mess, and you have injuries on your face and arms. You are barefoot, and your clothes are slightly torn,” he pointed out.
I laughed, then brushed my hand through my messy hair.
“To be honest with you, I wasn’t okay recently, but right now I feel more than okay, so don’t be alarmed,” I answered.
“That woman, was she carrying your child?” he asked.
I kept quiet, thinking back to her sad words of being raped.
“Yes, that child she has delivered is mine,” I answered.
“That’s amazing, congratulations! You now have two girls,” he said as I frowned.
“What?” I asked.
“Micah now has a younger sister to play with,” he answered.
“Oh, that’s great. Can I see them, please?” I asked.
“Of course, but not now. You have to wait for her to be moved into a ward. Then you can see them both and introduce me to her,” he said as I faked a smile.
I had no idea how she would welcome my brother. Would she pretend to be my partner and accept me as the father of her child, or would she tell him how I had pushed her down? If that were to happen, then there would be nothing I could do because I wasn’t going to ever tell anyone how she had kept me tied up in the garage because I wanted her to be safe and sound.
