Alec’s POV:
“Why am I in the office when you’re the one who’s supposed to be in here?” Damon asked seriously.
I had a feeling he hadn’t been working or looking at the files while I was away, but gosh! How could he just do nothing about his work?
“Alpha, aren’t you going to help out with work in any way?” I asked back.
“No,” he answered with a warm smile.
“Is this my punishment for being your friend and Beta?” I asked playfully.
“It’s actually your blessing. Now, why am I here?” he asked.
“I need a favor,” I answered.
“And what is it?” he asked.
“I want you to call Lee over,” I answered.
“Is there a problem?” he asked seriously, concerned.
“Not really, I just want him to help me out with something,” I answered.
He pressed his hands on the table and raised a brow.
“I’m assuming you won’t tell me what kind of help you need, and that’s just so wrong,” he muttered in a low tone, then stood up and pulled out his cell phone from his pocket.
“Since when do you carry your phone everywhere?” I asked as he dialed the number.
“I don’t usually do that, it’s just today,” he answered.
I moved to the whiskey table and looked at the bottle, thinking of taking a sip.
When he spoke, I turned and looked at him.
“How busy are you?” he asked on the call.
“I need you in my pack in half an hour,” he demanded as I lifted my hand, waving at him. I was trying to stop him from sounding so demanding.
“What if Lee chose not to come?” I asked curiously.
“He will be here within a few minutes,” he answered.
“Thank you,” I said softly.
“No problem. How is your mate holding up? I know it has only been a day, but I still worry about everything,” he said as my wolf growled in warning.
“What do you mean by that, Damon? I don’t like and won’t appreciate you treating my mate differently just because she is human,” I responded.
He moved to where I was and stood opposite me.
“I don’t like talking like that either, but there is nothing you can do to change what she is. By the way, it seems to me you have forgotten who I am to you,” he said as I swallowed hard.
“I’m sorry, I just feel uncomfortable and guilty,” I whispered.
“Over what?” he asked.
I sighed heavily then lifted the bottle of whiskey from the table.
“The man Jay, who was dating Olivia, was abusive to her. At least that’s what she told me and what I found out. He was treating her like his property, and that didn’t sit well with me. When she told me she wanted to be with me, I asked her to give me time to talk to Jay. But when I went to confront him, the trash began acting up and Luther had to take him down,” I answered honestly.
“Take him down, how?” he asked loudly.
“Well, he knocked him unconscious, and I ended up tying him up somewhere,” I answered.
“So not only is she in the dark about what you are, she has no idea what you did to the man?” he asked.
“Yes, but that’s not the issue here,” I answered.
“Then what is?” he exclaimed.
“While Luther was taking the man down, his daughter was watching. The little girl my mate came with witnessed everything. Not only did Luther threaten her to go with him, she fears me to death,” I answered.
He grabbed the whiskey bottle from my hand and took off the lid.
“My goodness,” he whispered, then took a mouthful and swallowed.
“So what are you going to do about her?” he asked.
I was about to respond when a portal appeared on the wall and Lee walked out.
“You know, there is a border to my pack and a freaking door right there,” Damon pointed out seriously.
“Oh hi Damon, nice to see you too, and thank you for that very warm welcome,” Lee answered sarcastically.
“On second thought, maybe you should go back,” he said as I cleared my throat loudly, getting both their attention.
“Hi and welcome,” I said.
“See, now he knows how to welcome a guest. It doesn’t hurt to act nice,” he said while he took a few steps closer.
Damon moved too and stood in front of him. I was surprised when they both smiled at each other as if they weren’t talking back and forth a while ago.
“It’s good to see you,” Damon said calmly.
“Likewise, Damon, but as I recall, you were the one having a debt with me, not the other way around,” he answered.
“I am not the one in need of your help, but my Beta,” he said as Lee shifted his gaze to me.
“Okay, so what may I do for you?” he asked simply.
“I want you to wipe a part of someone’s memory,” I answered as they both looked at me as if I had said something horrible.
“I’m sorry, what?” he asked.
“You are a powerful witch, so I believe you can do that for me,” I said.
“First of all, I’m not a witch but a warlock, and secondly, whose memory do you want me to wipe?” he asked.
“My mate’s niece,” I answered.
“I’m sorry, who now? Last time I checked, you had no mate,” he said as Damon laughed softly.
“He does now, and it’s a human mate. This guy went to kidnap the girl and beat the hell out of her obsessed lover. The little girl witnessed it all and became very afraid of him. Now he wants to fix it,” Damon answered.
“So, can you do it?” I asked seriously.
“You even said it yourself, I am a warlock, so yes, I can. Where is she?” he asked.
“In her room with my mate. Please come with me,” I answered, then walked to the door.
“Alpha, are you coming?” I asked.
“Yes, I am. I want to see what kind of lie you will tell your mate when she asks you who Lee is and what he will be doing to her niece,” he answered with a smirk.
I could tell that he was going to enjoy what was going to happen. But by now, he knew me like no other. I had a way of lying, and I was super convincing whenever I got serious.
“You know it won’t be that hard,” I said, then opened the door and walked out of the office as they followed behind.
“We will see,” came his playful response.
