Debby’s POV:
I quickly rushed to the balcony when I heard the sound of a car approaching.
“Great, you’re back,” I whispered to myself, then rushed to the entrance and walked out of the house.
I stood a few meters away from where Alec had parked and waited patiently for him to step down. When he did, I waved at him with a smile, but the smile vanished when he ignored me and went around the car to open the front passenger door.
Instantly, a familiar scent hit my nose. I slowly moved closer, astonished.
Did he really kidnap the poor lady, as I had suggested? If so, then she was obviously frightened.
He leaned in as I waited patiently for her to come out. When he turned with her in his arms, I frowned deeply. Her breathing was shallow; she was either unconscious or sleeping.
“Did you knock her out?” I asked, raising my voice.
“Quiet!” He commanded in a low growl.
“She’s sleeping,” he answered in a low tone, then walked past me as I slowly followed behind.
I went to the living room and sat down, waiting for him to join me. When he did, I quickly stood up while he sat down.
“What exactly happened? Did you drag the poor lady with you?” I asked seriously.
“Didn’t you tell me to do just that?” He asked, making me tense.
“Well, I did,” I answered in a small voice, hoping he couldn’t hear me.
“Well, I didn’t do it. When I went to get some fresh air at the beach, surprisingly, she was there as if she was waiting for me. We talked a lot, and I discovered that she wasn’t married. The little girl we had met at the beach isn’t her child. It turns out she took on the role of mother to her late sister’s child when she passed away. The man she’s with is actually a bad person who has a forceful grasp on her that she can’t escape,” he said as I sat down.
“So, what are you really going to do? Because if that little girl is in her care, she won’t leave her behind unless you bring her with you,” I pointed out.
He smirked, then stood up, looking at me with a cold gaze.
“Olivia is my mate and the one I am destined to be with. At first, I was willing to let her go because I thought she had a family with whom she was happy. But now that I know she wants to be set free from that man’s grasp, I won’t sit back and let him have her,” he said, then continued to speak.
“I will go and confront the man about Olivia,” he said as I shook my head.
“Do you think he will listen to you?” I asked.
“No, but I will make him, because, as you said, I am not human,” he answered.
“He might call the cops on you,” I said.
“Then so be it,” he answered and then took a few steps forward, standing in front of me.
“In my absence, please take good care of my mate. When she wakes up and finds you, a stranger by her side, she might panic, so please tell her to relax and wait for me. Also, point out that I have gone to have a word with Jay and that you are my sister-in-law, whom my step-brother divorced. Hearing his name come from your mouth, she will believe in you,” he said, then turned and walked out of the room before I could respond.
“Why is it always complicated when it comes to mates?” I whispered when I heard the sound of a car starting outside.
“Who knows,” my wolf answered.
I walked to the kitchen and opened the empty fridge with a sigh. I was hungry and needed to eat something.
My plan was to ask Alec to get me some food once he was home, but then this happened and I forgot about food for a few minutes.
“Alec,” Olivia’s voice came from the passage.
I quickly closed the fridge and rushed into the passage.
When she saw me, she froze. I too stilled my movements to avoid freaking her out.
“I’m so sorry if I startled you. Remember, we met at the beach a few hours ago? My name is Debby, and I am Alec’s sister-in-law… or I was. He left a few minutes ago and asked me to let you know that he has gone to confront Jay on your behalf,” I said. As she quickly turned, I rushed to her side and grabbed her wrist before she could walk away.
“Where are you going? Do you find me suspicious, or do you doubt my words?” I asked, concerned.
“Oh no, I do trust your words, Debby. It’s just that I’m worried about Alec,” she answered when she faced me.
“Everything will be fine,” I assured her.
“No, it won’t. Jay has a way of being manipulative, and when things don’t go according to how he wants them to, he acts aggressively. I fear he might turn violent with Alec,” she said. I burst out into laughter, startling her.
If only she knew what Alec and I were. No human was capable of taking down a werewolf unless they were a hunter or very skilled in combat. To top it off, Alec was a Beta with a lot of training experience, so it was impossible for Jay to land a punch, no matter how aggressive he became.
“I’m so sorry,” I apologized when I noticed her giving me a death glare.
“Alec is very much capable of protecting himself, so you don’t have to worry about him. He asked me to look after you, and I want to do just that because he has helped me a lot in my life. Your leaving will only make it very hard for me, and if I panic a lot, I might end up affecting my unborn baby in a bad way,” I said in a pitiful tone as her expression softened.
“I’m so sorry for being inconsiderate,” she said in a soft tone, as I smiled.
So, she was the type that easily believed lies. She wasn’t going to be hard to influence.
“You know, I’m so happy to see how you have chosen to be with Alec,” I said, tears filling my eyes.
“Alec has been so unlucky in love that he has no one else besides his step-brother to stand by his side. He is an orphan who was abused by the ones he treasured,” I said in a cracked voice.
She sadly grabbed my hands and gave them a light squeeze.
“Did he tell you about his past?” I asked softly.
“No,” she answered in a husky voice.
“Then let’s go into the living room. I will tell you about his sad past, which he rarely shares and opens up to people,” I said.
This was the only way to keep her from leaving, and I hoped Alec could understand that it was all for his own benefit that I was lying.
