August’s POV:
“Any questions?” Felix asked calmly.
She had just finished showing me around the house, and I had yet to meet the rest of the house members because they weren’t around.
“No, I would just love to take a rest,” I answered.
“Sure thing, follow me,” she said, then turned and walked into the corridor as I followed behind.
Her house was different from what I had imagined. Because she was a vampire, I had pictured her living in a cold, dark place. But then again, Leo had stayed here for years, so this place wouldn’t lack a fatherly touch.
“Here is your bedroom,” she said when she reached a room and opened the door.
“If you are uncomfortable with anything, let me know,” she said as I walked in, looking around.
The room was simple, with a bed in the center and a desk on my left. The wardrobe was on my right, next to another door which I was sure was the bathroom.
“The room is nice,” I whispered, then moved and sat down on the bed.
“Good, now take the rest you need because in two hours we will be going into town,” she said as I folded my arms.
“To do what?” I asked seriously.
“To introduce you to the staff of workers looking after my club. Have you forgotten that you are now going to be my employee?” she asked.
I dropped my arms and threw myself back, loving the comfort of the bed.
“I thought I was going to start tomorrow,” I whined.
“No, that’s how a lazy worker talks. Fix your attitude,” she warned playfully.
“Yes, boss,” I answered with a smile.
She turned and went to the door. Before she got out, she glanced at me.
“How about you call Whitney and let her know that you are safe and sound,” she said, then walked out before I could respond.
I sat upright and pulled out my cell phone from my pocket, dialing Whitney’s number.
While the phone rang, I stood up and walked to the desk, carefully examining the items placed there. A few blank papers were next to a pen and an empty flower vase.
“Luckily, I have my own laptop in my car because this room feels like it’s lacking something without one on the desk,” I whispered to myself. I smiled when Whitney’s voice came through.
“August.”
“Yes, Whitney. I called to inform you that I’m currently in Felix’s house. The journey was good, and now I’m in my own room,” I said.
“That’s good. Did you meet the rest of the house members?” she asked.
“No, not yet. According to Felix, they will be back soon, so I’m looking forward to it,” I answered simply.
“That’s good,” she said in a low tone.
“Oh, before I forget, I want to let you know that I will be working for Felix in one of her clubs,” I said as she screamed in a small, playful voice.
Whitney was a serious Alpha, but once in a while, she stepped out of character to cheer someone on.
“Please tell me that the pay is good!” she screamed at the top of her voice.
“We haven’t talked about the pay yet, but I’m absolutely sure that it will be good. Felix is a vampire who has lived longer than most humans, if not all, right? So she is bound to be either a millionaire or a billionaire,” I answered.
“Exactly! If she isn’t, then she might as well stab her heart to sleep,” she said as I laughed loudly.
“Or step into the sun,” I replied.
“Sadly, she can’t burn for some unknown reason,” she said between laughter.
“I know, right? Like, how on earth are vampires in this world able to walk into the sun?” I asked, then frowned when the door opened.
“Beats me too,” she responded as Felix glared at me.
“Because that’s how it is. Just because you read so much fiction, you believe it to be real life. Vampires can walk into the sun and not burn. The reason we avoid the sun usually is because the sun hurts our skin, but not to the point of dying. Also, just because we move through the day doesn’t mean we love it. I hate my time during the day and love everything about the night because that’s when I feel alive, hunt freely, and be myself. We sleep during the day because it’s a pain. Does that answer your question?” she asked.
“Oh my, Felix sounds so pissed,” Whitney said softly.
“I know,” I answered, then lowered my cell phone from my ear.
“Felix, this may be your house, but don’t you think it’s a little rude barging into someone’s room without knocking? Moreover, eavesdropping on someone’s conversation is very rude,” I pointed out.
She scratched her head, then faked a smile.
“I’m so sorry, I just came here to… discuss your pay,” she said as I shook my head.
“How long were you listening to my conversation?” I asked at the top of my voice.
“I don’t know what you are talking about!” she exclaimed, then disappeared from my sight in just a second.
“I guess I won’t have much privacy in my own room. No more bringing ladies to bang,” I muttered to myself.
“I heard that!” Felix screamed loudly in the passage.
I marched to the door and shut it loudly with laughter.
“I think she is worried about you because that’s not like her to listen in on a conversation. Did something happen?” Whitney asked after I had moved my cell phone back to my ear.
“Yes, she found me crying alongside the road,” I answered.
“What! Why? Did something happen?” she asked at the top of her voice.
“Sharon called,” I answered sadly.
“Oh, I’m so sorry. I didn’t think she would call you,” she said in a low tone.
“It’s okay, Whitney. I know. I just became overwhelmed by emotions and broke down. But after having a talk with Felix, I felt so much better. Let’s not forget that I will soon be getting my own money, so that’s good news to me. I will be taking myself out frequently and just spoiling myself as much as I can,” I answered.
“Tell the kid that he will be fine in Felix’s care because she’s a keeper,” I heard Leo say in the background.
“Tell him I have heard and that I have no doubt about that,” I answered.
“He has heard you as well,” she said with a chuckle.
“Anyway, I will let you know about the pay and how my new workmates will welcome me,” I said.
“Of course, keep in touch and take care,” she answered.
“Sure, you too,” I said, then disconnected the call and went to the bed, throwing myself down with a low sigh.
