Kamara’s POV
“What are you doing here, Ciara?” I asked, my eyebrow twitching at the sight of her. It was just last night I saw her and now I’ve run into her again.
“I own the pharmacy in this hospital.” She pointed out, tilting her head to the side and I scoffed. She was yet to even graduate from school and she would own a pharmacy in an elite hospital. “I know what you’re thinking sister, but when I have a husband I can make use of, I get whatever I want. Even if it includes ratting you out to mum and dad.”
“So you’re just a gold digger as they call it. No wonder you’re with a man much older. For his money and you aren’t even taking care of the family with it.” I spat out angrily, gaining everyone’s attention.
She looked around with an irritated look before grabbing my wrist and dragging me towards a balcony. “Look here, sis. My marriage is no one’s business. It’s not like they care. They won’t be disappointed in me, but you see, you will be the topic of emphasis. You know how much your mother and father invested in your writing that exam and your flight. Just to find out you are having a baby for some mafia boss instead. Isn’t that a thrilling thing?”
I should have just asked Fernando or anyone else to get me the medications instead of coming to get them myself. I had thought about how bad it would be if my parents found out I was having a baby for Diego to pay up their debts. I was glad Ciara knew nothing about it but now, I was driven to the edge.
“You see, Kamara, in this life, not everything is about being better than others. You can look so much better than them but once they aim to bring you down, they will.” Ciara pointed out with irritation in her tone.
“What has gotten into you, Ciara? You’re acting like a total bitch” I was cut off by the sharp sting across my face. I was shocked. My own little sister just hit me.
“You’re the bitch, Kamara.” She hissed angrily. “You do not have the right to judge me when everything I became is as a result of you trying to be the good kid. I am better than you even though you’re hiding in the shadow of a mafia boss.”
Without any hesitation or thought, I lifted my hand, hitting her across the face heavily. “You stupid bitch” Before she could finish, I grabbed her hair, making her look up at me.
“Look at me, Ciara. We might have joked a lot when we had time together but never ever raise a hand against me. You’re just fake living a doll life in a rich man’s house while I am at least living like a human. If it hurts you so bad that I am so much better than you are as you claim, then don’t belittle yourself and whine like a spoiled brat.” I hissed angrily, tossing her aside and she fell back on her butt.
“I won’t hesitate to beat you up and kick you up. I don’t care if your husband is some billionaire. They’re all trying to lick Diego’s shoes so don’t come here acting all superior and shit. I am your older sister. You give me some respect and you’ll get yours in return.” I shook my head irritatedly as I grabbed my bag of pills. “I am disappointed in you, Ciara. To think you’d let all this gold and diamond get into your head and disrespect your family.”
Without waiting for her response, I walked away, heading back towards Nana’s room. Where she had just hit me stung but I didn’t care. I knocked some sense into her. But to think she would actually be kissing up to a billionaire’s butt here while the family was suffering and I had to pay up father’s debts. I am stunned.
“I’m back,” I said, stepping into Nana’s room. She was having a conversation with Chantelle who turned back to look at me. She seemed to notice something was off so she stood up, walking over to me and grabbing the bag of pills from me.
“Did something happen?” She whispered, going through the bag.
“Apparently, the pharmacy is run by Ciara,” I said and she looked at me speechless.
“This isn’t some novel you know, that you run into an antagonist in the most random place you can ever think of,” Chantelle whispered and I just sneered.
“This is reality, Chantelle,” I replied, taking the pills from her to help myself to some of them.
“How are you doing with the baby, Kamara?” I heard Nana’s voice and I turned to give her a big smile.
“So much better. I had some dishes last night and they just tasted heavenly. Even the baby agreed with it.” I said, walking over to her bedside.
“I heard from Fernando you went to Cloud Ten. That company chain used to be my favorite back in the day. It’s been here even before Diego’s birth and he invests in it just so I could get to eat their meals anytime I wanted.” Nana narrated, chuckling gently.
“Diego really must love you,” I said.
“You can’t blame him. I was his only family before you came along. And now you’re both having a child to make your family complete. It makes me so happy.” She said, taking my hands with a soft sigh. “Now you can also enjoy the dishes in Cloud Ten as much as I do. We should have some when I’m out of here. Hopefully, my grandchild would love the meals over there too.”
Looking at how excited and how happy she was, it broke my heart. How would she react knowing I was just doing all this to repay my debt? How would she even feel if I left? But it wasn’t my place to stay. I had my dreams to reach and I just have to be free from the shackles of debt once and for all.
“Yes, yes, you’re right, Nana.” I nodded, forcing a smile as I squeezed her hands gently, trying hard to hold back my tears.
The little talk was interrupted by the buzzing of my phone. I pulled it out of my pocket, glancing down at the caller’s ID. Seeing my mother’s name on the screen, my stomach clenched.
I hesitated for a second before answering. “Mom?”
“Kamara!”
