Godiva PoV.
[I just found out that there are wonderful humans too,] Trisha spoke to me through the mind link.
“You’ll get to know their various traits later.”
I smiled at Trisha in response to her admiration for Declan once we set foot in front of his apartment. Not wanting to take her happiness too seriously, I still had to keep my feelings for Declan a secret from her. Even though it’s all in the past, I didn’t think Trisha needed to know this.
I slowly enter Declan’s fifth-floor apartment. We’re greeted by the smell of fresh cream-colored paint and an unfurnished room. Declan pulls back the curtains to reveal a clear view of the river below.
For this moment, I feel relieved to have met Declan. He’d been a great help when we needed to save money while I couldn’t find a job. He gave us a place for free at first, but I knew enough not to take advantage of his kindness.
We haggled over the price of renting this unit. The deal came to a point where I paid half of the original rent. Declan had a bit of a sour face when I adamantly refused his help. I won’t be a parasite as long as I can still breathe and move.
“Do you like the place, Godiva?” Declan looked back at me.
“Yeah, we like it. It’s more than enough for us to do activities.” I replied by nudging Trisha’s arm to back up my words.
“The old resident has gone abroad for work. I didn’t have to fix too much furniture since she brought all her own. I painted the walls instead of covering them with wallpaper. I hope you’ll be comfortable living here.”
“Thank you, Declan. By the way, where do you live? Considering we met by chance, I figured you must live in the city.”
“You’re right. I live in Fammeft’s central district. When we met in the park, we were about to head home. I didn’t expect that we would meet again so close together.”
“I see. I’m sorry that I didn’t really respond to our chat yesterday. I just didn’t want any misunderstandings with your wife.”
I was actually waiting for a response from Declan, but he just pulled the corners of his lips so thin that it almost didn’t look like he was smiling. His face is still the same as before, except the muscle mass on his arms is more visible than before. I turned my gaze in another direction rather than be trapped by wild thoughts.
Inside this empty apartment unit, we stood and talked. At exactly seven in the evening, Declan says goodbye to me and heads back to his home in the city center. True to his story, before we came to this place, the night view of the river outside the window is the only thing that cheered my heart.
Many of the young couples were simply walking hand-in-hand to enjoy the evening breeze and the warm atmosphere by the river. My eyes were immediately drawn to a small family laughing away. Their little daughter was pedaling a bicycle with both feet after her father let go of the handle.
My heart flinched at the sight. I didn’t think I would experience the feeling of a complete parent when their daughter could do something for the first time. My hand automatically moved gently across my belly. I hoped everything would be fine after she was born.
I gasped when Trisha patted my shoulder. She chuckled slightly at the reaction, then immediately apologized by lowering her face. In her raised hands were two medium-sized boxes that gave off the aroma of bacon.
“Where did you get them?” I asked while grabbing the two food bosses.
“While you were daydreaming, a human man in a uniform sent these. I don’t know who sent them, Luna.”
I picked up a scrap of note-it memo paper attached to the top of the box. I read it and found Declan’s name at the bottom of the paper. Once again, I felt grateful that he’d sent us dinner.
“Declan sent it. That’s very kind of him.”
“May I have a word, Luna?”
“Just say it.”
“His pheromone scent is so strong. I don’t think you can recognize it because you only belong to Alpha Castor and Alpha Pollux. I think he likes you.”
“That’s impossible. He could have just had sex with his wife. Forget it, let’s eat.”
That’s impossible. I’d seen Declan and his fiancee the last time I’d been to the restaurant. As I chewed the bacon, I reminded myself that I hadn’t been paying much attention to them.
I never saw Declan again after that day and immediately heard from Bree that he’d gone out of town. I’d lost my desire for him ever since.
My stomach was already full, and I leaned against the wall just below the window. Now I understood why my appetite had doubled. I get hungry faster and full faster.
I glanced at Trisha, who had already finished her dinner. Deep in my heart, I was grateful that I hadn’t caused her any trouble. After all, I was still responsible for her life for serving me.
Who knows what will happen tomorrow? Today we made it through with luck. I didn’t want to be too dependent on Declan, either. He’s just another person to me.
I lay down on the floor. Seeing my movement, Trisha follows suit and lies down next to me. For the umpteenth time we talked and told stories about how things were in the pack before I came to be their Luna.
‘Luna?’
That one word has no meaning now. I’m not the Luna of the Moonstone pack anymore. I’m a wolf on the run and in seclusion.
While Trisha still refers to me by that status, part of me feels guilty for leaving them. I’m sure I made the right decision. Pollux betrayed me, and I deserve to be happy.
“Don’t you miss Alpha Castor? You only have problems with Alpha Pollux.” Trisha’s voice sounded low.
“I think I should cut ties with Alpha Castor too because they must have a bond as Alpha twins.” I answered her question as I touched my slightly tight chest.
“Do they have no more space in your heart, Luna?”
“I don’t know… one thing for sure is that I never tolerate betrayal. You did see the video from me, right?” I took a deep breath to try to look strong.
“Yes, Luna. We deserve to be happy.”
“You do too, Trisha. Why did you have to come with me?”
“It was Alpha Castor and Alpha Pollux’s orders for me. I can’t undo it because they didn’t ask for it themselves.”
I paused. Trisha had always shown dedication to being an obedient omega. I could only repay her by treating her well.
Eventually, drowsiness started to creep into my eyes. As I rubbed my still flat belly, I prayed silently that she would grow up to be a healthy werewolf.
