Chloe’s mouth was covered, and just as Evelyn was about to rush down, she ran into a group of people coming up.
Evelyn froze in place, and Chloe took the opportunity to cry out loudly.
The man walking at the front had a straight posture, his presence unmistakable. It was Conrad.
When Evelyn tried to cover Chloe’s mouth again, it was too late.
Ford’s sharp eyes immediately noticed, and his face changed. He quickly brought his team over.
Evelyn stood frozen, as if she had been targeted by hunters. Terrified, she crouched down and stiffly tried to calm Chloe. “I’m just joking, don’t cry, okay?”
But Chloe cried even louder.
It wasn’t until Ford picked her up and she smelled the familiar scent that Chloe clung to Ford’s neck and cried out. “Ford, this bad woman is trying to kidnap me! She hurt my arm, it really hurts!”
Ford frowned and stared at Evelyn. “How did you get here?”
Evelyn trembled, her lips quivering. “I… I followed…”
Conrad quickly walked over and took Chloe from Ford’s arms.
The little girl’s tears fell as she sobbed, “Uncle… Uncle, I’m scared.”
Conrad roughly, and somewhat awkwardly, wiped the girl’s tears away. Then, his gaze, cold and indifferent, fell on Evelyn.
Evelyn shivered under the weight of it. “No, Conrad, listen to me, let me explain.”
“Who brought you here?” Conrad spoke in a sharp tone, immediately jumping to a conclusion. “Was it that fool Booth? What do you want here?”
He had never asked her like this before. He had never looked at her with such a deathly gaze.
Evelyn had only ever seen his indifferent gaze before, but now she realized: that if this man wanted someone dead, he could do it without a second thought, cold and heartless.
“I…”
“Take Chloe back.” Conrad handed the child over to Ford.
Once they left, a gun was pressed directly against Evelyn’s head.
Evelyn froze in fear. “Conrad…”
“I’ll count to three. If you don’t tell me the truth, you’ll die.” Conrad held a cigarette between his fingers, looking at her impatiently.
Even though Evelyn already knew she was nothing more than a tool, used as a donor, those words still struck her like a blow to the gut.
Her dignity, her self-respect, had been trampled underfoot by this man!
“Why?! Why are you doing this to me?! Where did I go wrong, except for not being able to choose my fate? I really loved you! I thought of you, I just wanted you to be happy! I wanted to give you the best of everything! But in the end, you kept me around just for my eyes! I’m not even worth more than a little girl!”
Evelyn broke down, her defenses crumbling as she tried to grab his pants leg. “Conrad, did you ever love me, even a little bit?! Even a tiny bit? You were so good to me before, giving me whatever I wanted, even humiliating Lillian just to buy me clothes. You had feelings for me, didn’t you? You didn’t just use me, did you?!”
“When did you figure it out?” Conrad asked, his voice cold, barely reacting to her breakdown.
Her so-called love didn’t matter at all. He just wanted to know when she had discovered the truth.
He didn’t care how she felt or whether she was hurting.
Conrad, you’re such a man who makes me both love and hate you! Why did you show me such tenderness and sweetness, only to completely destroy me in front of my face, leaving not even a shred of hope?
“So you don’t care what happens to me, do you? You never took me seriously, did you?” Evelyn beat her chest in frustration.
Conrad, watching the woman lose her mind, clicked his tongue in annoyance. “Yeah.”
He was completely indifferent.
He had already decided her fate.
“My eyes… I won’t donate them!”
“Then just die.” Conrad raised his hand, and Evelyn’s tears instantly rolled down. The fear made her tremble uncontrollably.
“No, no, no! I don’t want to die! I don’t want to die! Why can’t there be another way?!”
“Another way? You think I’ve been spending money on you for nothing? Every penny I’ve given you hasn’t been earned easily?”
Conrad tapped the barrel of his gun against her face. “How much money have you spent from me, including your brothers and the house you wanted? I could buy you 20 pairs of eyes with that! I’ve been nothing but kind to you. You signed up on your own. I chose you. What’s wrong with a fair transaction?”
“Either you die, or you swap your eyes. Now make your choice. Remember, choose wisely. You won’t get another chance.”
After Conrad spoke, Evelyn trembled and closed her eyes. “I’ll swap… I’ll swap!”
Conrad lowered his gun. “To avoid complications, calm Chloe down and go to the hospital.”
He walked past Evelyn and added, “Get Booth and bring him to the ancestral hall. I’ll tear his skin off if I have to! ”
Meanwhile, Booth was taken away in the parking lot.
When he knelt in the ancestral hall, he knew everything had been exposed. But bringing Evelyn to the old house shouldn’t have been such a big deal, right?
But who would dare disobey Conrad’s orders?
On the other side, Chloe was calmed and led to the car, still clinging to Conrad’s clothes, crying softly. “Uncle, why did that woman treat me like that? Did I do something wrong?”
Conrad looked at her tear-streaked face, furrowing his brow. “The surgery will be soon. Didn’t I tell you not to cry?”
Chloe sniffled. “But today was really scary. Can I cry for just five more minutes?”
Conrad patted her back. “Alright, one more minute.”
The little girl quickly stifled her tears. “Uncle, where are we going?”
“To get your new eyes.”
Evelyn’s little tricks had become too much.
To avoid any further problems, it was better to resolve everything sooner.
Chloe fiddled with the buttons on Conrad’s coat, lost in thought.
When they arrived at the hospital, Conrad went with Chloe for her checkup, while Evelyn was left alone in a separate examination room. A nurse brought in a set of clothes, and Evelyn looked at them with a burning desire to tear them apart.
“We’ll be pushing you into the operating room shortly,” the nurse said.
Evelyn gripped her bag tightly, the medicine Hunter had given her tucked inside.
But since she had been suddenly captured, Hunter didn’t know when her surgery would be.
Who would help her once the time came?
As Evelyn was spiraling in panic, something flew through the window.
She looked down and saw it was a crumpled paper ball.
She quickly picked it up.
[The person has arrived. Follow the plan, and your safety is guaranteed.]
Evelyn let out a deep breath of relief, but her heart continued to pound with unease.
She feared that one wrong move would turn her into a useless pawn.
She looked at the surgical gown on the bed, clenched her teeth, and carefully hid the poisoned needle in her undergarments.
Once she finished changing, she waited in the room.
