“When Marilyn went to see the police chief, I happened to be there,” Callie said calmly. “At least for you, she is a suitable wife who can get things done.”
Jaquan raised his hand, took a drag of his cigarette, and exhaled the smoke upwards.
“You never loved her from the beginning,” Callie stated bluntly. “You treated her well only because you were eyeing the Ellison family’s influence. For your father’s vision, you’ve achieved everything now, so you shouldn’t give up.”
She chuckled lightly. “Don’t tell me that at this age, you’ve suddenly found true love.”
Her tone was relaxed and mocking, as if it had nothing to do with her.
Jaquan stared at her, unable to understand. “Compared to Nelson, Jamir is no easy person either.”
“But he treats me well and can acknowledge me publicly. That’s something neither you nor Nelson could do.”
Callie looked somewhat wistful. “From now on, don’t let your men take me as your girlfriend anymore. He would get jealous.”
After she finished speaking, she seriously observed Jaquan’s expression, trying to discern any clues, but found none. He stubbed out his cigarette.
“I will rescue Cyrus, right in front of Nelson,” Jaquan said as he turned away.
Callie suddenly felt uncertain.
The weather was nice today, with a few clouds floating in the sky. The sun shone unrestrainedly on the green hills and lakes, making the scenery even more beautiful.
When she arrived at the stables, she heard several voices coming from inside the room. She stopped and listened.
“Mr. Oconnor, there was indeed a problem at the bidding meeting, but the missing thirty million has nothing to do with me,” an elderly voice said. The man was half-kneeling in front of Nelson, his face full of fear.
“I didn’t say you had to make up for it.”
The man was instantly surprised with his forehead pressed to the ground. “Thank you, Mr. Oconnor! Thank you, Mr. Oconnor!”
Nelson lifted his leg and pressed his exquisite leather boot against the man’s back, gradually applying pressure. “The Oconnor Group cannot tolerate two things: betrayal and embezzlement. You’ve committed one of them, so spend the rest of your life in jail.”
He spoke lightly but with lethal intent.
The man couldn’t move and desperately kowtowed harder and more forcefully. “Mr. Oconnor! I was wrong, I really know I was wrong! If you give me a chance, I will definitely make amends. By the way, I also know there’s a problem in the Oconnor Group’s HR department!”
This made Nelson’s actions pause slightly. He stretched his muscles and looked at Anthony.
Anthony immediately said, “He’s talking about the deputy director of HR who has issues with bribery. I’ve already dealt with it.”
Upon hearing this, the man’s face turned ashen. He had lost his bargaining chip for mercy.
Nelson chuckled softly and lifted the man’s chin with his toe. “Thirty million is a small amount, but I can’t use people with bad habits.”
With that, someone stepped forward and dragged him out.
They opened the door and dragged him past Callie.
She stood still, feeling the cold air blowing from inside, making her heart cold as well.
Nelson was dressed sharply today. He was now bending over playing billiards with a group of juniors. His posture was upright and striking, with a string of Buddhist beads on his wrist that made him appear gentle, unlike the ruthless Mr. Oconnor from earlier.
He aimed his cue and pocketed a ball.
Callie stepped inside but wasn’t sure if he was too focused to notice her presence.
She stood in the corner without any intention of approaching.
Nelson played a few more shots; none of the juniors were his match. Perhaps finding it boring, he put away his cue, opened a bottle of water, and took a swig.
After drinking, he looked up and seemed to notice Callie for the first time, raising an eyebrow.
