“Like it?” Jamir’s voice sounded in her ear.
Callie turned back, “Like what?”
“This kind of occasion.”
“It’s superficial.”
Callie genuinely disliked it. It was too flashy and lacked substance. She preferred grounded architecture.
People were gradually entering the venue, and a voice was heard, “I haven’t been well recently, sorry for worrying everyone.”
Before seeing the person, Callie looked straight ahead and saw Marilyn entering with Jaquan. She was dealing with a reporter.
Jaquan had already noticed Callie and Jamir, his eyes darkening.
“Mr. Scott.” Jamir extended his hand like a gentleman, “Nice to finally meet you.”
Marilyn regained her composure and was about to smile at Jamir when she suddenly saw Callie. Her smile froze.
She couldn’t smile, “What are you doing here?”
Callie just smiled without speaking. Jamir had shaken Jaquan’s hand, explaining, “Miss Ellison, you know my girlfriend?”
With that, the handshake tightened. Jamir looked back leisurely, “Mr. Scott, you’re quite strong.”
Jaquan slowly withdrew his hand, “Just surprised. I thought the news in the papers was just gossip, didn’t expect it to be true.”
As he spoke, Callie felt his probing gaze on her.
Marilyn also sneered, “Yes, I didn’t expect Miss Marsh to be so lucky to be with Jamir.”
The implication was clear: she was belittling Callie, suggesting she relied on men.
Hearing this, Jamir casually placed his hand on Callie’s shoulder and smiled, “I worked hard to win back my girlfriend. If you scare her away, who will I reason with?”
This statement meant a lot, reminding Marilyn that Jamir was Callie’s ex-boyfriend.
Her face turned ashen.
Jaquan, who wasn’t aware of this detail, realized it too, “So she’s an ex.”
Jamir corrected him, “First love.”
Jaquan’s hand at his side clenched slightly. At that moment, a waiter approached, “Mr. Scott, Mr. Ellison wants to speak with you.”
Jaquan glanced in Ahmad’s direction, “Alright.”
Marilyn also looked over and saw Charlotte. Her expression soured, and she muttered under her breath, “What an unlucky day.”
Callie stared at their backs, lost in thought.
Scarface and Jaquan had never met Reuben; they couldn’t be the acquaintances Malachi mentioned. Besides, they had no reason to kidnap Reuben since Jaquan had given everything during their time in Anbusea.
If it were him, he wouldn’t have needed to work so hard.
“What are you thinking about?” Jamir suddenly leaned close and asked by her ear.
Callie jumped in surprise and shook off his hand, “I’m going to the restroom.”
She washed her face and felt more awake. Just then, her phone rang with an unknown number: Come to the stables.
Callie guessed who it was and planned to ignore it. The second message came immediately: Do I need to come invite you personally?
She could imagine how that person would torment her if she didn’t comply.
Almost angrily, she grabbed her bag and headed out but was stopped at the door.
Jaquan lit a cigarette, watching her calmly, “It seems you’ve made your choice.”
Callie took a deep breath and suddenly asked, “Your father’s bail request failed, didn’t it?”
“You found out.”
