Earlier, when Derek had brought up the issue that he had wanted to talk about, Shane had thought that it was concerning Emma and how they would work together to bring her back to the pack, so that she could take up her rightful position which was now vacant, or would be in the next few hours.
During their meeting in the kitchen, Curtis had told Derek about Claire being his mate, and the fact that she had rejected him so that she could be Luna of their pack. Melvina had been aghast, but not up to Derek who was suddenly so angry at the matter that he had almost stomped out of the kitchen to accost Claire but for Melvina and Anthony who calmed him down. It was one of the reasons Derek wanted to meet his father for. He didn’t want to take any drastic harsh decision like he had done last night. Already then, he had concluded on banishing Claire from the pack. The only funny thing in the whole situation was that Claire hadn’t known who Curtis was. Perhaps, if she had, she wouldn’t have rejected him, knowing that she would still be a Luna for another pack. Curtis had mentioned that he wasn’t planning to tell her soon. He was up for the game.
But now, Derek wasn’t talking about that, but of an unknown guy?
His curiosity was infinitely piqued. He wanted to know who the guy was and what he had done that had grabbed and held his Alpha’s attention. It couldn’t be the guy that had landed Maya in the clinic, right? No. He didn’t think so.
He watched with rapt attention, as Derek tried to find the right words to describe the unknown guy.
“Does Lent have a brother?” Derek asked, and he frowned, trying to recall if the Lent, Anthony’s good friend, had any brother, younger or older.
“No, I don’t think so. I haven’t heard of any. In short, he doesn’t have one.” He replied, and Derek frowned.
“Is there a problem?” Shane asked, and Derek shrugged. “I am not sure.”
“Talk to me. what happened?” Shane inquired, stepping closer to Derek under the shade.
“Sometime last week, during one of the training sessions, there was this guy I had seen. He wasn’t really training, just looking around and observing. I had asked Anthony about him, and Anthony had replied that he was Lent’s… I can’t remember what. But it was either brother or friend.” Derek answered.
Shane sighed, ruminating over the matter.
“So, you think that the guy is a spy?” He asked, looking into the deep blue eyes of Derek shrouded with unsurety.
“Yes, most likely. My hunch says so. But Anthony seems to know him.” Derek muttered.
“So, you doubting your hunch because your brother is in the equation? You know what? Let’s find Anthony. We will inform him to tell us all he knows about Lent’s friend. That will be a start. Because I too think, that a spy is amongst us, apart from Esther though.” Shane stated.
Derek scrunched his forehead.
“Why do you say so?” He inquired, wanting to know the reason for his gamma’s suspicions.
“Well, our enemies that had attacked us yesterday hadn’t come through the entrance gates, but through a tunnel known to only the inhabitants of our pack.” Shane replied.
The lines that creased Derek’s eyebrows deepened the more.
“It could be my uncle’s doing.” He said, folding his own arms across his chest too.
“I had thought so at first. But your uncle hadn’t been in this pack since seven years ago, only until recent. The tunnels through which the enemies had used to enter into the pack, escaping the eyes of the guards which had been positioned at the gates, had been built just two years ago. So, how would your uncle know that? I don’t think he is the one. I’m just grateful for the presence of the vampires though, if not, it would have been a bloody massacre upon us.” Shane pointed out.
Derek unfolded his arms across his chest, then folded it once more, a bit speechless. This new piece of information has jarred his investigative mode on. A spy was in their midst. What was he to do now? He was the Alpha now. Does his father know about this?
“Who else knows about this?” He asked Shane, and the latter shrugged. “I’m not sure. I had just connected the dots on my own. I don’t know if any others had done so. Perhaps, the guards?” He stated.
“Where is Clem?” Derek asked, moving out of the shade, towards the house.
“I don’t really know. But I think he went over to his house to talk with Claire. I hope he doesn’t spoil Curtis’s plan though.” Shane replied, right behind Derek in movement.
“What about Anthony?” Derek inquired, his walking paces getting faster.
“I think he should be interrogating our latest prisoner… or perhaps… had gone with a delegate to send off a message to the Alpha of the White Sted Pack. It turns out the prisoner is his first son.” Shane replied, and Derek paused in his movements abruptly.
“Shane, what did you say?” He asked, turning around to face his gamma.
“I said that Anthony might have…” Shane was saying, when Derek interrupted him.
“Not that part. I meant the last phrase.” He mentioned.
“Oh that… the prisoner is Legardo’s first son…” Shane recapped.
“So, in other words, he should be the heir to the throne if Legardo dies right? He would be a good instrument of bargain then.” Derek stated.
“Perhaps…” Shane muttered, unsurety ringing in his voice, unsurety which Derek noticed.
“What is it again? Am I wrong somewhere?” He asked.
“Not really. It is just that Legardo has two sons. And rumor has it that the younger son is favored over the elder one because of his supernatural powers. He also has a higher chance to the throne than the elder.” Shane replied.
“But… he is the younger… the Alpha seat should fall to the elder.” Derek pointed out, a bit of incredulity ringing in his voice.
“Well, I don’t think Legardo sees it that way.” Shane murmured, furrowing his eyebrows the next minute when he saw Leo walking out of the prison house with two flasks.
