Marilyn smiled apologetically. “I was ill recently, and Jaquan didn’t tell me when he found you. I must have been neglectful, so I’m here to apologize.”
Callie’s gaze fell on her wrist, where the bandages were still in place. She recovered quickly, realizing that staying down wasn’t good and soon came out to be active again.
Mentioning Jaquan made the director stiffen, his smile becoming somewhat forced. “I couldn’t fulfill Jaquan’s request due to certain difficulties. You and your husband shouldn’t blame me.”
Marilyn didn’t get angry at all. “This is your duty, no need to apologize. Uncle, you watched me grow up. Do you think Jaquan is a reliable person?”
The director immediately nodded. “Of course, he’s responsible. Everyone in Ylosea knows how he treats you.”
“He treats me well, and I should reciprocate.” Marilyn smiled without any hint of aggression. “I just feel sorry that he has few relatives around him. Only our Ellison family can speak for him. Anyone would struggle if their father was imprisoned for over a decade, wouldn’t you agree?”
Cold sweat appeared on the director’s forehead.
Marilyn used the Ellison family as leverage and complained about Cyrus’s heavy sentence, creating pressure from all sides.
“His father was convicted of a serious crime and failed the bail review. There’s nothing I can do,” the director admitted.
“Naturally, but Ylosea’s management is so lax that seeing an elderly man beaten like that is shocking. As family, we are not reassured by the prison system…”
It seemed Marilyn understood that her and Jaquan’s fates were intertwined, so she had to get this done for him.
“Rest assured, the prisoners who beat Cyrus have been punished and separated from him. It won’t happen again!” the director immediately said.
“Can you guarantee that? Can you guarantee no one will harm him again?” Marilyn asked pointedly.
The director hesitated, suggesting the previous incident wasn’t accidental.
“It seems you can’t.” Marilyn smiled. “It’s almost Mid-Autumn Festival, Uncle. Letting him out for a family reunion, what harm could it do?”
Pushed to the limit, if he refused, it would seem heartless and disregard the entire Ellison family.
The director was momentarily speechless.
Marilyn glanced at the private room from earlier. “I heard you’re here for an investment promotion dinner today. Are you so concerned about foreign investors that you neglect local businesses in Ylosea?”
The director was already at a disadvantage.
Callie frowned as Jamir quietly stood beside her. “It seems Miss Ellison will get what she wants.”
Callie slightly turned her head, disagreeing. “I don’t think so.”
She sneered and walked down the stairs, raising her voice. “Miss Ellison is right. The Mid-Autumn Festival is a time for family reunions. Everyone looks forward to being together.”
Her voice drew everyone’s attention.
Marilyn’s expression changed as she watched Callie stride over with a smile.
“I’ve heard about Mr. Scott’s father’s case. It was an economic crime, right?” Callie directed the question to the director.
“Yes.”
“That’s not a violent crime. Why can’t he be released on bail?”
She guided him along, and the director replied, “His case is quite severe.”
“How severe?”
“He manipulated the stock market for profit and embezzled billions of dollars.”
