“Who is it?” Tom saw that she hadn’t answered yet and glanced at her. “Answer it.”
“It’s an unknown number.” The girl hesitated, as she had a habit of not answering calls from unknown numbers.
Tom was driving but spoke gently, “Answer it, it might be an old friend with a new number. Besides, even if it’s a scam call, my smart wife would never fall for it.”
Agnes smiled and answered the call just before the ringing stopped. “Hello,” she said softly.
“Bubu, guess who I am!” A girl’s voice full of laughter came from the other end of the line, playfully like an old friend.
Agnes recognized the voice immediately. “Is it Susan?” Although phrased as a question, she was certain.
“Yes!” Susan Clark was very happy. “How have you been lately?”
Agnes suddenly felt overjoyed; it had been a very long time since they last contacted each other. They were college classmates and best friends during those four years, but Susan had gone abroad for further studies afterward.
“I… I got married,” Agnes said happily, sharing openly. “What about you?”
“What? You got married?!” Susan was surprised but also happy for her friend. “Congratulations! Who’s the lucky one who married you?”
Agnes blushed and smiled shyly. “Where are you? Have you returned to the country? What made you think of calling me?”
“Arkpool City.”
“You’re really back?” Agnes’s eyes brightened. “When did you return?”
Since Susan was abroad, Agnes hadn’t informed her about the wedding, fearing it would be inconvenient for her to travel back and forth and disrupt her studies.
Susan told her, “I’ve been back for a few months now, but my job only recently stabilized. I’m planning to stay here long-term, so I thought I’d give you a call.”
“You’ve been back for months and didn’t tell me?” Agnes felt a bit regretful that she hadn’t informed Susan about her wedding when she was already in Arkpool City.
“I was worried my job wouldn’t be stable and I’d have to leave again,” Susan explained. “But now things are settled. I’ve passed my probation period and just signed a five-year contract.”
“Congratulations! Which company are you with? Are you doing design work or something else?”
“I’m an art teacher at a university.”
Agnes thought that was a great job too; being a teacher is a respected profession. The two long-lost friends continued chatting.
As their conversation was about to end, Susan extended an invitation. “There’s an art exhibition on Saturday. Want to go together?”
“Sure,” Agnes agreed quickly because such things never required much thought. Back in college, they often went to art exhibitions together.
Finally, Susan added, “Remember to bring your husband! I want to see what kind of man could marry our outstanding Agnes.”
Agnes turned her gaze lovingly towards the man driving the car and smiled brightly. “Alright, I’ll bring him along.”
“See you on Saturday then.”
“Okay.”
After the call ended, Agnes told Tom about the girl who called and their past relationship in college, as well as the invitation to the art exhibition on Saturday.
Tom nodded in agreement. “Sure, I don’t have to go to the office on Saturday and there’s nothing else I need to handle. I’ll have time to accompany you both.”
“Thank you!” Agnes put away her phone and turned to look at his beautiful profile with a radiant smile. “I know my little kitten is the best!”
