Chapter Seventeen

Book:Delta's Rejected Daughter Published:2025-2-19

I awoke the next morning feeling refreshed for the first time in a month. It felt glorious. Everyone noticed that I had an extra pep in my step at training. Even Melissa was impressed at how happy I seemed. Some pack members asked my Dad what made me so happy this morning. He said he wished he knew, but he hoped whatever it was it would keep happening because he likes me this way. Everyone agreed with him.
By mid-morning, my cheer had dwindled if not fizzled out like a sparkler. The government surveillance job ran into yet another problem. The onsite commander called me in reference to a member who was mistaken for a burglary suspect and was arrested by the local police. He was released shortly after his arrest but nonetheless, the damage had been done.
So, once again, I’m calling the Alpha King to apprise him of the situation because the person who was arrested was a wolf. The Alpha King recommended that we pull that wolf from the surveillance team and put another in his place-done. If the Alpha King wants something done, you do it, no questions asked. Next, I had to call the onsite commander and inform him of the decision.
I dialed Colonel Thompson’s number and he picked up on the third ring, “Colonel Thompson,” he answered professionally.
“Good afternoon Colonel Thompson. It’s Melanie Miller. I was calling about the incident last night. Do you have a few minutes to discuss it?” I inquired.
“Yes, I do. How can I help you today Ms. Miller?” Col. Thompson replied flatly.
“I spoke with the Alpha King regarding the situation. Since we had a wolf accidentally identified as a burglary suspect, he wants that wolf taken off of the surveillance team and replaced immediately,” I explained.
“Why? Just because he was mistaken for someone else? It could have happened to anyone. …” Colonel Thompson stated with frustration.
“Colonel Thompson. If the Alpha King wants him to be replaced, he gets replaced. End of story. We follow orders just like you did in the military. Make a recommendation for his replacement and let me know by the end of business today. Understand?” I commanded leaving no room for argument.
“Understood. Any other instructions?” questioned Colonel Thompson.
“No further instructions for you Colonel Thompson other than, please be safe and alert,” I declared as I sighed softly noting my own frustration in this conversation.
“Thank you, Ms. Miller. We will be. You do the same,” advised Colonel Thompson as the line went dead.
I just shook my head at the end of the conversation. Why can’t humans just follow directions like we do? Why do they always have to question our orders or rather commands?
I got back to work reading my reports thinking today has to get better. Just before I logged off my computer for the day, I received an email from Mr. Grey. I opened it and read the contents. He said if I approve the email, they can get started as early as tomorrow on the project. I eagerly opened the attachment to see what designs they had waiting for me to approve.
I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. There were two designs waiting for me. I looked at each design very carefully. Each design would work for us and I couldn’t decide. I had to get my father’s thoughts on this before I sent in my decision. I called my Dad and sent him the email with the attachment.
After careful consideration, we chose the second design because it allowed us to add on if we needed to in the future. I sent the approval email to Mr. Grey and headed for home. That was the spark I needed to end my day.
The next day began with a bang, literally. Mr. Grey’s construction company showed up bright and early to begin working on the building. They started tearing down the inside of the building so they could reconstruct the walls and space the way we wanted it to be.
I asked Dad if I needed to work from home or the pack house in case they needed me. He thought it would be a good idea to stay close by today and tomorrow just in case they ran into any unforeseen problems.
I worked in an empty office at the pack house. I notified Allison and Benedict that I would be doing so for the next couple of days because of the beginning of my special project. I was told no worries. Cool beans.
At the end of the first day, I went to the building to see how they had progressed with the demolition of the inside. I was surprised when it was completely gutted. They were still in the process of cleaning it up when I arrived to check it out. Workers were going in and out of the building. I was careful not to interfere with them.
I left knowing that the construction was right on schedule according to the foreman. I couldn’t have been happier. My Dad said he hopes I continue to be this way because the pack has noticed how happy I have become these past couple of days.
The next day, I went to the pack house to the same office to begin my work. I found a simple red rose with a note that said, ‘A beautiful rose for a beautiful she-wolf.’ I didn’t know what to make of it. I had never received a rose like this before.
I called for my father and showed it to him and he chuckled. “I think someone might have a secret admirer,” he chuckled as he hugged me.
“A secret admirer? What? Really, just because someone left a rose here for me?” I stammered flustered by it all.
“You never know until we find out who left it. Just enjoy the special attention, you deserve it,” declared Dad as he kissed my cheek before he left my office.
“Love you, Dad,” I called after him. I will enjoy the special attention for now. I won’t read too much into it. Hmm, I wonder who left it for me? I’m not going to play detective yet-it would be easy for me to check the cameras to find out, but I won’t do that, yet. I’ll enjoy this, for now.
