Jessica’s POV
I got into the taxi, feeling both happy and pleased.
My interview with Xavier was a success.
I still can’t believe that he is the CEO of Metro Empire, and I am his wife.
It is such a juicy information.
If only I could write about myself.
That would increase my ranking and then just maybe I could win Reporter of the Year.
Winning the Reporter of the Year Award is the dream of every reporter.
And that includes me, even though I’m still an intern.
But the person currently holding that record is Natalie Drew.
She has been holding the record for the past five years.
She is also my boss.
Not really my boss, but the manager of Global Media.
Also, for some reason, she doesn’t like me.
I have been working as an intern for over three years now.
The other interns who came in with me have already signed a contract with the company, but mine was always put on hold.
People kept telling me to go to a different company, but I just couldn’t do it.
I’ve always dreamed of working in Global Media, and I won’t stop until that dream comes to pass.
When I got to the company, I headed straight to my team’s office.
“You’re in my way,” Someone said.
I turned to find Natalie standing behind me.
“Sorry about that, Miss Natalie,” I said to her as I moved out of the way.
She was heading to her office.
All of a sudden she stopped in her tracks.
She turned around and stared at me.
“You’re back early,” She said to me. “Are you finally ready to admit that this isn’t the right job for you?” She asked me with a smirk on her face.
That was the deal from the start.
I senior colleague had made a typographical error on a news report and blamed me for it.
When I tried to explain to Natalie, she didn’t listen.
Instead, she lashed at me and fired me.
“Please Miss Natalie, I can’t leave,” I said to her as tears rolled down my eyes.
She looked at me with disgust in her eyes.
“You are not worthy of being an employee of Global Media,” She said and turned around.
But before she could walk away, I knelt and grabbed her by the leg.
“Please don’t do this, I promise to do anything,” I said to her.
She pulled her leg away, and I fell to the ground, hurting myself.
“You don’t deserve any opportunity, Jessica. Just look for another career, because you suck at this,” she said to me and walked away again.
I couldn’t let it go.
All the years that I spent, I couldn’t let it go to waste.
“Let’s make a bet Miss Natalie, I’ll do anything you want me to do, and if I don’t do it, then I promise to quit on my own!” I yelled.
She halted and stayed at a spot.
Then she turned around and walked towards me.
“You want to make a bet with me?” She said and snickered. “That’s fine, let’s play.”
She walked towards a Metro Empire poster on the wall.
She pointed to the poster and said.
“Before the end of the month, get an exclusive interview with the new CEO of Metro Empire. But if you don’t, you have to quit and never return to Global Media,” She said.
I had no choice but to agree to it then.
It was either that, or give up on my dream.
“You can start typing your resignation letter,” She said to me with a smirk on her face.
But I wasn’t going to let her win.
“But you didn’t ask me if I did the interview,” I said to her.
She laughed.
“Why should I waste my time doing that?” She asked. “It’s obvious you didn’t do it.”
I raised a drive, making sure everyone in the office could see it.
“This drive contains the content of my interview with the new CEO of Metro Empire,” I said.
Everyone gasped.
Natalie’s smile left her face.
“You’re bluffing,” she said.
I smiled and said to her, “I’m not Ma’am.”
“Prove it,” She said.
I got a laptop and played the recording for them.
They were all shocked.
I couldn’t help but smile, knowing that I was a step closer to my dream.
Natalie got upset and headed for her office.
I had won this round.
In less than an hour, I was called into the CEO’s office.
***
I arrived at the bar as the CEO instructed.
He ordered me to go undercover with a male Reporter in the office.
But I was asked to dress rather explicitly.
“Are you going to disrespect me because you were lucky enough to get an exclusive with Metro Empire’s CEO?” He asked angrily when I told him I wasn’t sure if I could do it.
“No Sir,” I said to him.
“That’s good. Since you have the skills and beauty to meet a man like Mr. McCartney, then I think you can do the same again,” He said.
I knew what he was implying, but there was no way I could defend myself.
No one would even believe me if I told them that I was the wife of Xavier McCartney.
I would only sound like a crazy person.
After leaving the CEO’s office, I caught Natalie laughing at me.
Just as I suspected, she had a hand in this.
Gabriel, who was the male Reporter I was asked to escort, led me to a place for VIPs.
I watched him as he talked to some guys sitting there.
They looked rich and important.
One of them kept staring at me and biting his lower lip.
I couldn’t help but feel disgusted.
Gabriel finally introduced me to the VIPs.
Just then, the guy who had been staring at me grabbed me by the waist and pulled me to himself.
“What’s up sexy,” He said to me.
I tried pushing him away, but I wasn’t strong enough.
“Gabriel!” I called out, hoping he would help me out.
But he completely ignored me.
Just then his grip on me got loosed and I was pulled away by someone else.
When I looked up, I couldn’t believe my eyes.
“Xavier,” I muttered.
