“Mother…” Charlotte came back to her senses, not realizing she was being cautious.
Sienna withdrew her gaze and said it was nothing, “If you don’t like it, let Pepper retire in the backyard. There’s no need to force it.”
Charlotte breathed a slight sigh of relief, “Thank you for understanding, Mother. But I will visit him often.”
Sienna nodded and left, but Callie’s words echoed in her mind: She used to love dogs as a child, but now she doesn’t…
Maevelyn loved everything as a child, especially animals. She believed that even as she grew up, this nature wouldn’t change.
But Charlotte’s expression just now was full of vigilance and fear, and a hint of… disgust.
How could her daughter show such emotions?
Sienna felt a sudden heaviness, as if something was shrouding her, unable to be pierced. She took a deep breath and turned towards the chapel.
Charlotte stood still, glancing at Pepper tied with a rope. It barked at her, startling her. She patted her chest to calm down.
She gripped the drawing tightly, almost tearing it.
Callie returned to her original spot, finding it empty except for the housekeeper cleaning.
She instructed, “Please tell your young mistress that I have left.”
The housekeeper nodded respectfully and said warmly, “Miss Marsh, someone will escort you out of the Ellison family.”
Callie was surprised; she didn’t expect the Ellison family to be so considerate.
The rain had stopped, and sunlight streamed through the clouds. At the entrance of the Ellison family, bougainvillea bloomed wildly. Callie squinted and walked a short distance, spotting a G-Wagon parked there.
The license plate was conspicuous.
Callie’s brow furrowed.
The car must have been driven by Kieran, as he stepped out from the driver’s seat and walked over, “He wants you to get in.”
Callie scoffed, “I don’t understand the world of the wealthy. Where’s the car he drove?”
Kieran answered reluctantly, “Miss Ellison said she liked it and kept it at the Ellison family.”
Callie clicked her tongue, “Fine.”
Kieran didn’t dare say more.
Callie took a deep breath and eventually walked over and got into the car.
Inside, there was a faint scent of sandalwood mixed with the man’s presence, exuding a quiet authority.
She didn’t look at him, “Even the Ellison family’s housekeeper is yours. Nelson, you’re quite capable.”
No wonder he always got information so quickly.
In the corner of her eye, Nelson’s face was gloomy, almost morbidly so. “One must be thorough in their actions. Just like if I were you, I wouldn’t meet Jaquan in the middle of the night.”
He knew.
When it came to Jaquan, Callie always felt a bit guilty towards him. She stiffened and got straight to the point, “Where is Reuben?”
Nelson slowly raised his eyes, his gaze falling on her bruised wrist with amusement, “When did I ever say I knew where he was?”
Callie covered the wound Pepper had caused and became anxious, “You clearly said so. Nelson, don’t play games with me. This is very important to me.”
Nelson moved unhurriedly. He reached out his cold hand, grabbed her wrist, and forcibly turned it over.
His eyes were long and narrow, filled with an oppressive aura rather than charm. “I only have clues but I’m not certain yet.”
“Tell me. I’ll find him myself!” Callie exerted force, frowning deeply, not caring about their contact.
Nelson ignored her and took a band-aid from the glove compartment, placing it on her hand.
If he didn’t want to talk about something, he wouldn’t say it no matter what.
