Chapter 89 – Return to me

Zara’s POV
A deep and lengthy breath escaped Nic’s lips, and my attention quickly shifted toward him.
If he couldn’t see me, how could I possibly calm him down? He was ready to obliterate everything in
his path like a hurricane.
Nicolas’s body suddenly relaxed a bit, and the wind abruptly calmed down a bit.
My gaze fixed on the window-the storm was still there, but it seemed to be preparing to destroy.
How was Nicolas controlling the weather?
Was it because of me-or was it because he knew there was danger roaming around?
I placed my hand on top of Nic’s, hoping he would be able to feel me, or just maybe he would sense
that I was next to him.
That’s when the strangest thing I have ever seen happened.
While Nicolas held my hand, a soft glow appeared between our hands, and I could feel how a warm
current-his magic-moved between us.
Nicolas stiffened next to me, yet he didn’t let go of my hand. His movements became calculated as if
he were cautious.
That worried me, and I tried to get Nic to let go of my hand.
Kaya must have felt my anxiety.
“Nic is just restoring our energy. He is healing us,” she said. “There is nothing that you need to worry
about.”
“But what if?” I argued. “He looks afraid.”
Did Nic notice he was healing me?
Or was he just anxious about something else?
“He will know when to let go…” she said.
“She was too weak to wander around outside,” the nurse suddenly said, interrupting Kaya.
The doctor sighed out loud, and my gaze snapped toward him.
The old doctor seemed afraid of his Alpha, and he was continuously looking at the weather outside.
“Alpha, with the amount of wolfsbane that was found in Luna’s system,” the doctor hesitated. “I am
surprised that she woke up so quickly. Not to mention that she was able to make it down to the
gardens…”
“And perform a ritual,” the nurse chirped. “It’s unheard of!”
Both Nic’s and the doctor’s gaze snapped toward the nurse, and a growl escaped Nic’s lips, while a
lightning bolt struck outside, silencing her.
“It seems as if the continued interruption was annoying the doctor,” Kaya chirped.
“Seems so,” I said, chuckling. “She has been interrupting him constantly. I am surprised that it took
Nic so long to quiet her down.”
“Maybe he didn’t care,” Kaya remarked. “His focus was on us.”
“Usually wolfsbane victims take at least a full day to recover,” the doctor said, and my attention
snapped back to him.
Did I hear him correctly?
Nicolas’s body tensed beside me, confirming the truth of what I had just heard, and his fingers
tightened around my hand.
“Don’t worry, Alpha,” the nurse cooed. “Luna’s body burned off all the wolfsbane already. Her body
is just exhausted. All she needs is some proper bed rest, and she will recover fully.”
The smell of fear suddenly tickled my nose, and the sound of soft whimpering pulled my attention to
the direction of the door.
It was Mariana; I was sure of it.
Did she come to check up on me?
Why did she seem afraid?
Did Nicholas threaten her? He wouldn’t dare hurt her, would he?
Will he punish her for me helping her shift into her wolf?
It wasn’t Mariana’s fault I fainted. I didn’t know what would have happened after I helped her.
My thoughts shifted. Everything happened so quickly.
I only felt a bit strange after I completed the ritual, but that was long after Mariana shifted into her
beautiful wolf.
I couldn’t believe what I had just done. I was dumbstruck.
I immediately shifted my attention to my hands. There were no signs of how I just summoned the
white light from above and broke the century-old curse.
However, I remember how it felt when the warm magic coursed through my veins, or the immense
energy my body provided. It was amazing to know that the white light had a conscience. It knew
exactly what I wanted to do without even putting much thought into it.
I heard soft paws running through the forest. It was in a hurry, and it was coming from the direction
of the trees.
Someone was coming closer in a hurry, and my gaze swiftly moved in the direction of the sound.
The warm forest breeze quickly carried the honey and vanilla scent to me, informing me that Nicolas
was standing and watching us. My heart leaped out of my chest in excitement. I was happy to know
he was back home safely.
Mariana’s beast must have heard him too, and she turned her massive head in the same direction.
Ray calmly stepped out from behind the bushes. Ray’s face remained frozen in confusion.
“How long will she be sleeping?” Nicolas demanded to know, forcing the memory from my mind.
The doctor said, “It can be an hour, maybe two. It can even be longer.”
“It all depends on how fast her body restores its energy levels,” the nurse added.
Nicolas let out a deep breath and suddenly let go of my hand. He stepped away from my bed and
turned his attention out the window.
“Leave us!” His tone was quiet, making the doctor and nurse shiver and quickly exit the room in a
hurry.
Mariana popped her head inside; she gave Nic one last look before she quietly closed the door
behind her.
Nic stared out the window at nothing for a moment before he let out a deep breath.
He appeared defeated as he dropped his shoulder.
“Zara,” he suddenly spoke. His gaze abruptly shifted in my direction. His blue eyes froze with worry,
and the muscles in his jaw twitched with tension. “I know you didn’t faint because you helped
Mariana. You haven’t exhausted your body for saving her….”
“But….” I silently argued. “The Goddess just said it was because-”
“I saw him too….” Nic said. “I know he is close. I know he found a way into the pack to steal your
magic from you. From us. I will not let him hurt you….”
That’s why the storm is still brewing outside. Nic must still sense him inside the pack.
I went closer and cupped Nicolas’s face, hoping he could sense me.
“I can feel you,” he said, a soft smile following on his lips. “Please return to me,” he whispered.
