Ahmad took a deep breath and patted Jaquan’s hand. “Over the years, you’ve always taken care of Marilyn. It will be hard on you in the future as well.”
“Not at all. I saw her as my sister before, now she’s my wife. Naturally, I will take good care of her.”
“Alright. I’ll handle the impact brought by the Securities and Exchange Commission,” Ahmad decided after some thought.
Nelson raised an eyebrow, a cold glint flashing in his eyes.
Callie understood too. Jaquan was the husband of one of daughters of the Ellison family. This identity could secure his peace for the rest of his life.
Ahmad adored Marilyn, she could feel it. It was what a father could do for his daughter.
He had an aura of calm authority, accumulated over years of hard work, as if no matter what happened, he would protect them.
Callie watched Ahmad’s figure, lost in thought.
If her guess was correct, how should she face all this?
After giving his instructions, Ahmad turned to Regan and said, “Isaac is not easy to handle either. Keep an eye on him.”
Regan nodded in understanding.
At this moment, the housekeeper brought a bowl of soup. “The medicine is ready.”
Sienna took it and re-entered the room.
Before leaving, Ahmad wanted to say a few words to Charlotte but his gaze fell on Callie. “Why are you here?”
Callie finally received his attention, her emotions complex. “I came to the Ellison family to take shelter from the rain. Mr. Ellison, am I welcome?”
Ahmad frowned. He had a good feeling for initially, but after Charlotte returned, it vanished.
He nodded at Nelson. “You handle it.”
With that, he left with the help of a servant, his figure gradually disappearing.
Charlotte looked anxious, worriedly glancing at the man beside her.
Nelson patted her hand to comfort her. “Go take a bath and get some good sleep.”
“Nelson, I don’t want to.” She grabbed Nelson’s wrist, feeling a strong sense of crisis.
He smiled. “What are you afraid of? I’m not doing anything.”
The affection in his words made Regan look at Callie with concern.
Callie, however, didn’t care. She wished she could tear off Nelson’s facade. Pretending her foot hurt, she said, “I’ll leave when the rain stops.”
Back in the room, Regan saw that Callie was fine and breathed a sigh of relief. “You scared me just now. I really thought Marilyn was going to turn against you.”
“Just throwing a tantrum. She still relies on the Ellison family.” Callie saw through it and paused. “Ahmad seems to spoil her a lot.”
“After all, she is his daughter. But speaking of which, Isaac seems quite insignificant. I used to think such families favored boys over girls.”
It didn’t fit the national context. Callie frowned but didn’t say anything.
The heavy rain showed no signs of stopping. Regan went to take a shower while Callie, feeling stuffy in the room, decided to take a walk.
The Ellison family mansion was large. She walked through bright corridors, rainwater falling on her arms, feeling very cool.
At the end of the corridor, she saw a flash of crimson in the night. The smell of smoke was pervasive. A man’s silhouette stood there, lonely and desolate.
Callie wanted to leave.
“That’s Ahmad’s study ahead. Where are you going?”
The man’s voice was muffled from smoking as he approached step by step in leather shoes. “Don’t tell me you were just passing by.”
Callie looked up and saw Jaquan’s face.
He blew out a puff of smoke at her face, forcing her to squint.
“Why aren’t you asleep yet?”
“I just came out of Ahmad’s study for a smoke.”
“What did he talk to you about?”
“You’re very curious?” Jaquan’s smile was cold. “You’re too bold. This is the Ellison family. You didn’t stop but indulge Nelson. Do you know the consequences?”
He was referring to what Nelson had done to her earlier in the day.
