Kamara’s POV
“Kamara?!” Ciara, my younger sister called in shock, taking a step back from the man she was with.
“What are you doing here, Ciara?” I asked, my voice as hard as steel and I could see the worried look on her face when she saw me. What on earth was she doing here?
“Do you know her sweetheart?” The middle-aged man asked Ciara who looked nervous before shaking her head.
“She’s just an acquaintance.” She laughed nervously, ignoring me like I wasn’t there. I was about to take a step towards her to give her a good beating when Diego took my hand, keeping me in place. “It’s great to meet you again, Don Diego. I would have never thought you would come today.”
“It’s a pleasure seeing you too, Melinda,” Diego replied coldly before looking down at the Middle-aged man. “And I see you are still flocking over her, Gideon.”
“What can I say? She’s my precious bride.” The old man chuckled before walking past us with Ciara in her hand. Melinda? When the fuck did Ciara turn to Melinda.
“Do you know her?” Diego asked as he took my hand, leading me towards a table in front.
“Know her? That is my sister.” I said and I could see the indifferent look in his eyes. It was like it wasn’t the first time she had met her but rather the first he had actually spoken to her. “What on earth is she doing here? And the bride of some rich man?”
“Maybe your family gave her to him.” He replied, pulling out a seat for me, pushing me down with my shoulders and I had no choice but to take my seat as I looked back at Ciara who was laughing with some people as she glanced back at me.
“My family never said anything about her getting married. She was supposed to be in school.” I snapped at him as he sat down before me. School. Supposed to be in school.
“I’ve seen her once at an event with Gideon. But won’t she ask why you’re here also?” He asked and that was when it hit me. That’s true, I was supposed to be in a fashion school in New York. When we all had the video chat three days ago, I was in New York as I had told them all.
“Just forget it,” I mumbled, playing with my fingers nervously as my gaze flickered over the table. There was a name tag, Diego Sanchez, with different plates and golden cutleries on the table. It was like any VIP restaurant setting but in an event.
“Don Diego.” I heard a feminine voice, pulling me out of my thoughts to see a blonde-haired woman standing there, glancing between Diego and me. “It’s nice to see you brought a date with you today.”
Diego didn’t say a word and just ignored the woman who turned to me instead. “I am Olivia. I am a partner here, just like Don Diego.”
“Kamara,” I replied with a smile.
“What a lovely name. What do you do, Kamara? For someone as pretty as you to stand by Don Diego, you must have something you do.” She asked. I knew those kinds of people. They’d end up speaking bad about you once you say something wrong and I wasn’t foolish enough to do that.
“I am in the fashion line. I am a designer.” I said to her and she looked stunned.
“Oh, my goodness. Don Diego, you had someone in the fashion line while I’ve been looking for one all these days? Is it fair for you to hoard something valuable to yourself?” Olivia glared at Diego who didn’t even spare her a glance.
“You spoke to Fernando about it, not me.” He replied calmly, his gaze not leaving his phone. For someone who was cold and always angry when I first met him, he still held conversations with people.
“What a killjoy.” Olivia rolled her eyes before turning to me, and taking my hands. “Here is my card sweetheart. When you’re ready to begin work, you can come. I’ll recommend you to Atlanta’s biggest fashion house.”
I turned to Diego but he didn’t really seem bothered about what she just did so I just gave her a warm smile while accepting the card. She was about to continue the conversation when the lights went dim and only that focused on the stage was bright.
“Looks like it’s starting. See you later, dear.” She patted my hand gently before walking away. I turned my attention to the stage where a lady had walked on.
“Good evening and we welcome you to this annual event of ours. As partners, you will be introduced to our special dishes all released during the course of the year.” She said and the entire place was filled with applause.
Despite my mind being briefly taken off the fact that I had just met my sister here, it didn’t wander for long. It was shocking and unbelievable. I turned back to look at her and I could see her focused on the presentation on the stage.
She soon stood up, excusing herself from the table and I did the same. “Don’t wander too far. There’s a chance there are enemies around.” Diego said calmly as if knowing where I was headed.
“I’m just off to the restroom.” I waved him off, going after Ciara who was going towards the restroom also. As I stepped in, I came face to face with her.
“K-kamara…” she stuttered.
“I thought I was just an acquaintance. What on earth are you doing here? And did you get married to a big shot without Mum and Dad knowing about this?” I snapped angrily, storming towards her. She rushed back, making sure I didn’t hit her.
“You have no right to question me, Kamara. I thought you were in New York, what are you doing here with Diego?” She asked, grabbing onto the wall behind her.
“Mother and Father would be so disappointed in you. A liar.”
Disappointed in me? Of course, they would.
I gave up on my dreams to help them from dying and the way I chose to do it, they would be disappointed.
